How to remove aero wing from 87 GTA??? Please help!
So I have a new fiberglass wing straightened and primed for my brothers 87 GTA. I'm going to fit the wing before I paint it, and I was hoping someone could tell me how to remove his factory one??? I've never had one off before...
I mean the decklid bolts are self explanatory but I don't know how it's held on to the glass

After you remove the deck bolts just push forward on the entire wing,

Oh, I can believe it! My Formula looks just as nice as that GTA with 69,000 miles on it and spent many years in a climate controlled building only brought to a few car shows a year and the wing on it looks like it has 150,000 miles on it! It's all warped on top with creases on each side, kind of sunk in, splitting at the corners and splitting out on the inside. I too will be getting a fiberglass one in the fall. You'll have to let me know how well the new one fits! That's a beautiful GTA by the way!

The fiberglass ones fit well, I've had mine since 2001. Never painted it to match the car so its still primer. The car was my primary driver up until about 2005. It then spend the next 3 years outside. The last 10 years in my workshop with weekly drives. I had one spot where the gel coat cracked/chipped and when I pulled the chip off I could see some plastic looks like a peace of the vacuum bag plastic got in it... easy to repair... not sure if they are made by the same company though. The shape isn't 100% the same. Example the leading edge of the spoiler is squared off. But looks 1000 times better than the cracking rubber one.
Just be cautious if you have working lift struts. When I put the fiber glass spoiler off and took off the heavy factory one I could hit the release button and the hatch would shoot open. Its best to replace them with non aero hatch struts. Oh and you put wood screws into the fiber glass and it slides into the clips on the glass frame... one of those screws has since rusted and broke where it rubbed some... I would suggest finding some stainless screws unless they have changed the design since.

Re: How to remove aero wing from 87 GTA??? Please help!
Well this one didn't fit worth a damn. I had to make cross cuts in it on both sides to get it spread out wide enough to fit the glass. I had it perfect and in primer before I test fit it. I had straightened it and fixed all pin holes, etc. I am NOT IMPRESSED with the quality of this thing. Itll be fine when I'm done with it, but this one was not a quick, paint and bolt on deal. I'm just glad I didn't paint it first! I had the spoiler at the body shop before my brother brought his car over....I should have had more patience and fit it before I even touched it

I still have to sand the fiberglass repair, straighten it with filler, prime, sand, seal, paint and clear. I'll keep ya posted how it turns out

Mine actually has a stress crack in the same place i will have to address at a later date. Definitely wasn't a bolt on and paint job but better than what came on them. Gorgeous GTA by the way!

Yeah, he definitely got a nice looking car.....he traded his Harley straight across for it this spring. It's a 305 TPI, 5 speed car so it's way more fun to drive than my car lol

This one cracked when we were pulling the tips apart when test fitting. This will more than likely be the repair that you need, too. It will be light years better than the factory one when it's done. I'm hoping to have it on the car this weekend.

Re: How to remove aero wing from 87 GTA??? Please help!
Well, that certainly puts me off from buying one. I expect to test fit with minor work, sand and paint for the price they are asking for these things! Sounds to me like they should be asking about $150.00 tops if it needs that much work because apparently they didn't make it right to begin with. I wonder it they are all like this? You have to put screws in it to fit the clips? I've put screws in fiberglass before and you have to drill and tap and it needs to be solid, otherwise, it will not hold very long and will crack.
