1991 camaro build thread
I bought essentially a one owner white t top auto 305 with red interior about two months ago following my monte carlo ss getting t boned badly. My first f body in about 15 years. I was browsing and my imagination started running wild at the thought of a solid low mile IROC clone daily driver I wouldnt be worried about driving. I really wanted t tops or vert as I have a few hard top cars.
I bought the car with a tad under 70k. I can tell the previous owner took care of it and the mileage is correct but also had his fair share of fun times with the tops off (cracked dash, faded). Not a speck of rust and drives and handles very very solid. Paints decent and presentable but has some lazy offspray onto door handles, parking lights etc.
Ive really been enjoying fixing it up and researching (a lot on here). Its enough of a blank canvas and generic car I dont mind making modifications for driveability and comfort. I do generally prefer these cars stockish in appearance although 4th gen upgrades dont clash too much to me.
Ive already put over 3k miles on it and done some basic maintanance and upgrades. I added a wonder bar which works wonders, added some silverstars, and picked up a pretty nice set of black leather 99 camaro seats ill be installing very soon. (car was complete when i pulled them if theres some other upgrades that would be worthwhile?) I also replaced the old hood and trunk struts.
My plans are dd/good weather dd the car and probably upgrade suspension and handling as well as appearance first. Ive been enjoying driving the car so I dont want to build it to the point where i worry about driving it so thats a tightrope to walk for me. It hasnt given me any trouble yet so Im debating leaving the 305 until it goes out.
I want to add IROC hood, camaro grill, stripes, black the headlight bezels for appearance. The RS dash and third brake light Im leaning towards leaving unless I get more **** later. Im also thinking of either getting iroc rims (i prefer the less common style with the fatter design) or some vette rallys which im leaning towards. I really love rallys and dont get why they seem to be uncommon on third gens. I mean if theres something that clashes stylistically i dont get it.
I know a couple yards with irocs but I have been trying to get to the main 2 since I got the car since they are only open while Im at work.
Im thinking of using this build thread for my own reference and sharing my work and updating it pretty regularly.
Heres a few pics. If this is in the wrong section I apologize.

Cool! I like what you're doing. I love the rally rims, but they're not my preference on a thirdgen.....especially if you're going for an Iroc look. -in my opinion, the Iroc was the first more modern appearing car from GM. Before the Iroc....and even the later year NON Iroc cars look more classic. Nothing wrong with either, just different. ...and rally's look more classic to me.

Man i think that looks mean! I do see what you mean and now that I think about it I do think a plain third gen camaro might look better with rallys then an iroc. Iroc especially with decals are futuristic looking and rallys are very classic muscle.

Installed some black leather 4th gen seats out of a 99. Pretty good shape a little tear on the drivers seat. They are super slippery. Theyre going to suck for the next month of NC summer heat but theyre much more comfortable and dont hurt my lower back like the original seats. Drivers seat was power, passenger manual. Will put back seats in later.

I have a bright red 89 Iroc. ...you can click the link in my signature to my car's facebook page. I bought it in '98 with 70k miles, bone stock and in gorgeous condition. In hindsight I might've been better off to leave it alone, but it's given me 20 years of fun and wrenching experience, to say nothing of the people I've met with it along the way. It's been quite a journey. ....and as my more recent financial position has afforded, I've finally been able to build an engine and drivetrain, and get a repaint. Car is pretty sharp!.
Here's a pic from about a year ago. Engine is built, but hadn't been painted yet

Nice car. Looks like a low mileage survivor from the pic. I wouldnt regret fun I had in it. Did you build the original engine or swap another motor? I dont think Ive ever seen that around. I have a good memory for cars Ive seen... maybe thats why I cant remember what I ate for breakfast... too much of my brain memory is occupied remembering cars Ive seen on the road?
I installed some new parking lights for my car. Man the gap in them is horrible, and the originals always fit like gloves. I might be on the lookout for some fairly clear original ones at the junkyards because mine looked horrible but these a1 auto made in taiwan ones dont fit right.
Also put a "camaro" grill on.

It looks like a gold/tan interior car like yours.
So do you have an automatic or manual?

Re: 1991 camaro build thread
I know that parking lot well! ....I ran Triad F Body Club with my buddy about 15 years ago. We used to have bi-monthly cruise ins at the Nascar Cafe. Used to run 30+ cars some nights, and we'd never have less than 15 unless it was raining or snowing. Ahhhh the good old days. As for my car, it's originally a 350/auto car, but it's now a 383 with a TKO 5 speed. Timestamp on these was March, 2005. WOW!!!!!!! Time flies.....

Nice gathering.
Some new goodies:
Not pictured hood which is on my car already and a/c compressor. Guy was parting out a 90 iroc with a 5 speed. It was in very good shape but was sold at DUI auction and the guy couldnt get a title. Also has front sway bar and front bilsteins you cant really see.
Got a dash also from a guy near charlotte, one very tiny crack.

What other parts do you need? I may have some. ....what rear gear? I'm getting ready swap out my 3.27 borg warner rear. Posi spins two nice solid tire marks......most of the time, lol. Works great, but with a 383, I don't wanna destroy it. Rather pass it to someone who needs it.

Re: 1991 camaro build thread
I think its a 3.42, it was paired with a 305/5 speed. I cant be totally sure until I open the housing though. It is out of an IROC.
Theres not a ton of things Im looking for after buying all that stuff at least until I get to upgrading the motor. Front ground effects iroc style, seat belts, SFC, maybe a manual transmission or tpi injection 350 if it was pretty cheap.
Oh yeah I do need some good condition t tops. I went to look at some glass ones that were in great shape but Im thinking of trying to stick with the plastic ones.

What’s up tigerss, fellow N Carolinian. Currently live in the Fayetteville area, but I lived in Greensboro mid 90s until 03. Question, I see you’re looking for IROC style front ground effects. I don’t have any, but I would like to buy your current front spoiler. I have a complete speed density TPI system if interested. Few other things too, let me know.
