Sure, fire away when you have some time, thanks! *I consulted some of the other threads and a polish followed by a clearcoat or possibly even a gray paint seems to be the way to go. Can’t go too bare metallic if one is aiming for an OE look.

Re: My 1989, G92, 5 speed, N10, DX3, IROC-Z
So it finally happened to me. The rubber backs of my factory floor mats have turned to a messy tar.
I've spent all weekend contemplating saving them or simply putting them away and replacing them.
I'm gonna try to save them.
I'm going to order this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Anti-Slip-R....c100005.m1851
or something like it, cut to size and glue to the back of my factory mats.
This may be a bit thick though. I'll have to peruse Home Depot.
Anyone have any better ideas?

Gave the mats a good cleaning and hose off, while I plot my next move. Lots of black crap came out of the rubber backing.

I actually have a bottle in the cabinet. I've used it on wheels and other stuff.
Pretty sure I used it on this after I Scotchbrited it with a CLR solution. These were a couple of my eBay pics when I sold it. Rare 1979, Saxon Yellow, 304, 4 speed AMX. This is the "After":
Here is "Before". This is it moments after it was delivered to my driveway. My wife took this pic and attached it to a nasty text Lesson learned, don't have a mouse infested, non running, "field find" delivered, unless you are home.
Believe it or not, this car sold quickly to an AMC enthusiast. It was very solid and rust free and had ALL the AMX accoutrements. BTW, there is a factory '89 IROC exhaust in the back hatch above. Long story.....

I am amazed I’m seeing something other than a thirdgen lol. Nice work! AMC rivals the TG(O) cult following. The old man had a Javelin he still waxes poetic about occasionally. The nufinish was a joke though I am loving it post-handwash so far. That being said I’ve yet to try a four stage meguiars or etc.
Funny you should mention that: I still love the magnaflow hillbilly exhaust thrown on pre my purchase but sometimes I think about going back to the stock look for the cleaner lines overall.

BTW, I also have a 1977 Lincoln Continental. My FIL ordered it new.
That tough old paint required wet sanding and a ton of product to shine. Foam pads died on the buff.

I guess I'm assuming those caps are the same that would have came on my car......some jerk put chrome caps on it at some point. Still had the original tires on it when I got it, but evidently they thought they needed bling

Maybe? There's a seller on Ebay UK that sells gray caps in the approx dome shape, but they don't show up on Ebay.com.

Those are all close, but I haven't found any exact ones out there yet.
I friend bought a 1K mile '82 Pace Car. I said, see those caps? Don't lose them. He was driving on those original Eagle GT's up until a couple of years ago. One day, he had to pull off the highway for an emergency four tire replacement when they finally gave up the ghost. He made sure he kept those caps, though.

I get the original style caps from salvage yards off spare tires from 80s GM cars. its great because they aren't normally degraded from being outside.

I had a pair of old Camaro steel rally wheels off of an old 82 iron duke I had about 20 years ago out at my brothers farm, and look what was on them!
I actually found a third on a spare donut tire but its not in good shape at all

You know that sticky plastic sheeting dealers stick on to the carpet to protect it. I was able to liberate some and use it on the rubber backs of the mats. There's a learning curve with this stuff and the second mat went much easier than the first.

Good job on the mats!
I need to get some gray valve stem caps.. looks much more legit.. I’ll look for NOS, but knock-offs are better than the black ones I have..
I like the keeping the car clean rules too..
I always say
-don’t touch the paint
-don’t eat in it
I don’t let the car get wet and pretty much dust it off and detail mist it every time I get home from a cruise. In the winter it’s covered and started once a week. I have a technique down to avoid swirl marks too. I’ve dusted this car off 100 times and don’t have any micro scratches yet..
The interior gets vacuumed every other trip or so. Shop vac in the garage is clutch.
engine compartment gets a wipe down once a month or so.
Your black IROC is one of my dream IROCs.. never was able to find a black one with the options I was looking for.. that’s such a great car and the chirp video is awesome..

Just an FYI to my peeps regarding the floor mat hack. It works awesome for show. But the backs are a bit too slippery to drive with safely.

It's funny how many of us, including myself searched to find original gray air caps for our third gens. I am not sure if any of the irocs & birds I had in the very early 90's had the gray caps, but if they did, I can assure you I would have changed them to black. I got lucky a few years back when I met a guy who work at a tire dealership in the 80's & for whatever reason he threw a handful of gray caps in his tool box & had them in there for decades before selling them to me. I have things like that in my tool box today. Just a few random things taking up space.
Are you tempted to buy the EAGLE GT tires for your car now? Or did it have something else? Whenever I see those wheels I picture the GT's with the raised white or black outlines. Not sure what years they came, I know my (non WS6) 87 Trans am had them.

So, I'm going to bite the bullet and order some ACC mats for general use and save the factory mats if I ever show it.
But ACC has so many grays! Which one is the right one? I called ACC and asked for 3 of the gray color samples and they sent me this.
I've previously noticed that the driver's side mat and the passenger side mat were two slightly different shades. This makes it obvious. I think the second from the top seems like the closest. What do you guys think?

I’d say second from the top as well..
I just got Classic Industry mats because they are really good quality and fits perfect around all the seat plastic bolt covers and everything. Even has a flap that fits perfect over the footrest section.. The gray is slightly off but I can live with it..
I only put the factory mats in if it’s a show or a trophy night at a cruise night..

If they do they are awesome and would like a better match! I got the “Camaro” embroidered ones since it matches the lettering on the grille.. Not sure if the embroidered ones are different but I didn’t get to choose an exact gray.. would have been nice!

I found ACC floor mats page.. Wish I knew about it before! Lots of options, Logos, carpet texture, colors, etc..
Can get the stock carpet in stock color with vinyl binding..
Pretty cool.
Too bad bad they don’t have that GM emblem as an option!

My factory mats are mint luckily, but I don’t like to use them for driving. They match the color and carpet better so it would be nice to have some more factory looking rugs for basic use.. Thanks for turning me on to these, I was looking for a backup set of NOS with no luck
