I just had my Camaro up on a hoist...

Just had it up in the air and rinsed off the bottom of the car. I noticed my front crossmember has ZERO paint on it. I had no idea they weren't painted from the factory. You'd think they would rust immediately...????

Well, see the engineers knew that the gaskets used in 1982 would leak enough oil to prevent anything from the engine down from ever rusting.

I want to find some LPS rust inhibitor to spray on the non painted parts, too...and then take better pics.

Spraying WD40 on that every year or so, might work too.

FYI, looks like someone painted or neuralized the rear end, since they came bare metal. Also, it looks like someone attempted some detailing in front with a silver rattle can.

The car has had some kind of quaker state undercoating in places....

The silver you're seeing is just a light reflection. There's nothing on it

I have pics from other angles, and the reflection is in a completely different pattern. Plus I was under there looking around for an hour. Believe me, it's a trick of light. There's no overspray anywhere

Im kinda thinking there's silver paint on at least the cross member, there's no way it wouldn't have rusted by now.

No, it's bare steel, you can see it is, you can see the HAZ from the welding, and the welds are bare too.

I'm a painter. Believe me, there's nothing touched up or doctored in any way....other than whatever got that quaker state undercoating on it when it was new. I was SHOCKED at the condition of the bare metal parts. They look like brand new. Every nut and bolt under the car looks new. It spent it's life in a climate controlled garage, and I bought it from its 71 year old previous owner. He must have never, EVER driven it in rain or crappy roads. Now I have to figure out how I can preserve it during my ownership. I don't want that stuff to go to hell under my doing lol. And I don't have a climate controlled environment to store it in. It currently sits in a storage unit.. It has a small decal in the back window that looks like a quaker state logo....but it says something about undercoating. Anyone ever heard of it??

It is called Quaker State Q Metal-Gard

I just researched it. I don't think they've made it since the later 80's

The Preservation/History/Originality angel on my shoulder says to leave as much as possible untouched. The Practical Devil on my other shoulder is screaming about eliminating that pellet style catalytic converter. I see that thing hanging there, and part of me starts twitching.

Ha! Me, too! I think my '82 got about a second faster (ok, less slow) when I ditched that thing!
