Re: 1987 IROC-Z convertible. Are 4 IROCs too many?
Feel stupid I didn't properly troubleshoot this when we were there Charlie. With the mileage on the car, I was just convinced that it would be wiring related, dirty switch contacts etc, then I couldn't even figure that out.
Now you know why I just weld them on my daily drivers. Never had a welded one fail yet!
Re: 1987 IROC-Z convertible. Are 4 IROCs too many?
No worries, Jeremy! The reversing switch came loose from the motor because of the broken housing. It seems like such a stupid way for the mechanism to fail.
Re: 1987 IROC-Z convertible. Are 4 IROCs too many?
I need some input. I installed the pulldown motor and housing and everything worked fine. A few days later I go to drive the car and the 2 year old battery is dead. Not dead like it needs a charge, but so dead it wouldn't take a charge.
So last night I get a new battery and everything is fine. Out of curiosity tonight, I checked the NEW battery's charge and it was down to only 20%. I check the pulldown motor and it's not working. I feel the motor itself and it feels hot. I unplug the power to the reverse switch for a few minutes and the motor cooled down. Plugged it back in again and it works. Any ideas?
Re: 1987 IROC-Z convertible. Are 4 IROCs too many?
I’m so happy mine works..
In my 87 I had to open up the motor and wind it down to the point where I could slam the hatch and it would catch and shut all the way.. Sometimes the motor would start working again and then die again and I’d have to take it apart again..
I think in the final years of the car the motor fixed itself and was consistently working..
Re: 1987 IROC-Z convertible. Are 4 IROCs too many?
Yes, I'm hopeful it will make more sense once i get in there. I've bookmarked several threads here on the subject.
I don't want to be chided by Drew for not searching.
And I have a very hard time figuring out what's being discussed.
One picture of the whole mechanism = "See that little black plastic reverse switch" in a photo full of little black parts....

There are some youtube videos which might help get you orientated.
Re: 1987 IROC-Z convertible. Are 4 IROCs too many?
I think this car is mad at me. In the past week I've replaced the pulldown motor/housing, replaced a fried 2 year old battery and now the hatch release button doesn't work, which on a convertible is the tonneau release button.
I've checked the ACC fuses and even replaced them because in the past I've been burned by blown fuses which looked good. The switch is connected and you can hear it actuating when you press it.
Re: 1987 IROC-Z convertible. Are 4 IROCs too many?
Check the actuators. They may need to be cleaned or lubricated. Also check all of the cables.

Re: 1987 IROC-Z convertible. Are 4 IROCs too many?
There’ll be a black cable looking thing going into one end and a power connector going into the other end. The actuator itself is a silver like cylinder shaped part.
Re: 1987 IROC-Z convertible. Are 4 IROCs too many?
If the brake light on the dash lights up when you push the tonneau release button, check in the trunk on the trunk mechanism. There is a switch that comes unplugged.

Re: 1987 IROC-Z convertible. Are 4 IROCs too many?
Drew, The reason why you have to push down might be because the cable is out of adjustment. I had to bend the one of the ends for the cable, once I did this it works perfectly. Granted the solenoids they used barely get the job done.
Re: 1987 IROC-Z convertible. Are 4 IROCs too many?
I had to do this to mine until I made my little adjustment. Like I said there was about 1/16" slop and I had to adjust the end... Interestingly it was only the left side that would stick. Once I did that I have not had any problems with it releasing.
Re: 1987 IROC-Z convertible. Are 4 IROCs too many?
To be honest, it never bothered me enough to look into it. LOL Just assumed it's because the tension on the cover keeps the solenoid from popping completely. After using the backup pull cables a few times, pushing down just a little while hitting the button was a welcome workaround.
Re: 1987 IROC-Z convertible. Are 4 IROCs too many?
It didn't bother me either, but when I was troubleshooting my release button problem I had the side panels apart and I noticed that the solenoid had some slop on the left side, It was not much, almost not noticeable. In my case the pull of the solenoid did not always release either. So I tried manually pulling in the solenoid, and at that point I realized the travel was not quite enough, so I adjusted it so that it would be and now it works better. NOt perfect but stronger solenoids would be a bonus.
Re: 1987 IROC-Z convertible. Are 4 IROCs too many?
It seems this car will soon find a new home. People have been wanting to buy this car from me ever since I got it. Last summer a friend of mine wanted to buy it. I asked him, what would you do with it? Take it to cruise nights? He said, oh no. It'd be my daily driver and I'd let my wife drive it too. Ummm, sorry bud, not for sale.
Anyhoo, I posted some pictures of it on one of the FB pages a few weeks ago. Someone saw it who is the best friend of someone who had the EXACT car back in the day. It was stolen after a year. He got in contact with me and said he's been looking for this exact car all of these years. So we made a deal. Waiting for the funds to clear and then I'll send the title and wait for the shipper. It's going to the east coast. Kind of bittersweet for me actually. I hate to let it go but it sounds like it's going to make someone very happy.
And now I can bring the yellow '85 back home and deal with it's bull$h!t.

This car would have been perfect if I had a winter residence in say, south Florida, and I shipped it down there to use for the purpose of my wintering pleasure. Of course, I don't have a winter residence other than my house.
So, my garage is full. I was rotating an IROC through my parent's garage. I have somehow acquired my father-in-law's 1977 Lincoln Continental and have been keeping it in his garage. I just feel I've got cars all over the place. Mentally/emotionally it convinces me that I can never get another old car, because I literally have no place to put it.
Once the '87 goes, I still don't have room, but at least I can look at cars and have the glimmer of possibility that I could finagle some storage solution if I had to. Weird, I know.
Re: 1987 IROC-Z convertible. Are 4 IROCs too many?
you need a 4 post lift Charlie. Then you can put the black car on the lift and park something under it.
I'm maintaining 5 running/driving thirdgens right now. There is a to-do list on each car as there always is, but I'd drive any of them cross country right now.

Yes, I do need a lift! Something stops me though. Maybe I'm afraid of complicating the way I organize my garage parking, who knows. But I should get a lift, it makes the most sense.
And.....I need to put up a white board in my garage, with each individual car's "to do" list.

Yeah, me too. But time to move on to the needs of the others.
I'm pretty sure this will be one I'll look back on and regret selling, because of it's low miles and originality. I sold the '83 and '92 without even a second thought, this one kind of bummed me out when it went on the trailer.
