SPECIAL EDITION CONVERTIBLES ASC ONLY PLEASE

Re: SPECIAL EDITION CONVERTIBLES ASC ONLY PLEASE
Received the Hawks '87-'89 tonneau pad, and it fits the 1986 just fine. Only difference is that the driver's side of the pad has a unneeded rectangular cutout for the top or tonneau release (?). My top release is under the center if the tonneau.

Re: SPECIAL EDITION CONVERTIBLES ASC ONLY PLEASE
My 89 has a slide to release the top from the tonneau on the drivers side.
I wonder if you contacted Hawks, if he would make you one without the cutout.

Re: SPECIAL EDITION CONVERTIBLES ASC ONLY PLEASE
ASC and GM built the 87 Camaro convertible as a 20th Anniversary edition car. Some 87s have a map pouch like a Firebird but with lettering stating 20th Anniversary, the ones without the map pouch have the plate.
One theory is that cars ordered from GM as convertibles have the pouch, and cars sent to ASC by buyers and dealers got the plate. Not sure if that's accurate anymore. Hope that helps

Re: SPECIAL EDITION CONVERTIBLES ASC ONLY PLEASE
Drew, you are correct, the VIN 3 cars had the pouch in 87, and the VIN 2 cars had the "Special Edition" emblem. I have not seen anything contrary to this, unless someone changed it.

Re: SPECIAL EDITION CONVERTIBLES ASC ONLY PLEASE
GTASourcePage.com mentions that 1989 ASC convertibles had "both an RPO code and a drop-ship code" for cars ordered by the dealer to be converted.
Is that a correct statement?
What are those two codes?

Re: SPECIAL EDITION CONVERTIBLES ASC ONLY PLEASE
My father has #0088. 1986 Z28 ASC Special Edition.
My grandfather bought it brand new from a local Chevy dealer (Jack Maxton) here in Columbus, OH. He passed it down to my dad when it got too difficult to get in and out of, so it has been family owned since new. Has 79k miles on it.
My father has been considering selling it. We know its pretty rare, but we're not sure of its actual value.

Re: SPECIAL EDITION CONVERTIBLES ASC ONLY PLEASE
That is an earlier ASC convertible: meaning an 86 but probably a late 86. The ASC just under the lighter I've only seen on 86s and very early 87s. Beautiful car.
The value is going to have to be determined by you& a potential buyer. The title will say it is a couple based off the 6th digit of the VIN being a "2". It is technically an aftermarket convertible but luckily it was completed by the same company (ASC) that did GM factory convertibles.
ALL documentation adds to the value & value should be higher than a ttop pr hardtop 86 with similar options.
beautiful car & thank you for sharing.
If you have any original paperwork we'd love to see pictures of that too.

rocketolds400, Nice looking car... I was wondering, would you be willing to share the last 8 digits of your VIN, I do not want the whole thing. This would tell us roughly when it was made, and which factory it came out of. It would help us with our research. Thanks

Just came across this special edition Z28 on CL. The description says it's number 409, although I believe the total number does not apply here.

Re: SPECIAL EDITION CONVERTIBLES ASC ONLY PLEASE
The car listed is indeed 103. That is my car. It has been in the garage for four+ years now while I have built some others. I just bought a 67 Camaro convertible and in the process of restoring my 91 B4C !LE 5 speed. If I don't sell the 87 Special Edition I will sell my 89 IROC convertible and build it. I really listed it for space reasons but moved some stuff around and have the space now,

Re: SPECIAL EDITION CONVERTIBLES ASC ONLY PLEASE
I have been searching through threads for months trying to get information & or background on these "SPECIAL EDITION" Convertibles.
All the information I've been able to obtain mainly through TGO shows these cars were the 6 digit of the VIN as #2 cars (Coupes).
Also some say it started as early as late 85, others say 86 & ran up until 88. I've seen the Special Edition #s as high as 482 & as low as 41. I just found FOUR more threads ALL being 1986 cars, one is #81, the other is #138 (1986 car) just found another thread with a 1986 car #0090 & one that was destroyed in a junkyard (not 100% verified on year, betting an 87) / was # 141 indicated by the badge on the dash as well as had the engraved markings on the convertible cross members. This is THE FIRST time I've heard stamping on the rr as me as well. I'm guessing a stamping is on the frame connectors.
On another not: ASC said they only made 82 Camaro verts in 1986. (Chevy Enthusiasts). So much information spread out to far.
In addition I've seen posts that there were ONLY 263 Special Edition verts built (which can't be the case). I own #103 & is a 1987 Convertible IROC with a GM date code of Manufacture of 1/87 but an unreadable ASC date code.
Questions are:
1. When did GM actually sign the contract with ASC for the convertible program and start numbering the 6th digit of the VIN to be a 3? We all know the 87 dealer brochure didn't make any mention of a convertible & there was a suppliment to the dealer service manual.
2. How many of these cars were actually produced with the #2 & converted total? I think I saw a late 86 car with a higher Special Edition # than my 103.
3. Of the cars converted by ASC and given the "Special Edition" plaque: did they start the sequence of numbers in 85 or 86 & didn't reset for the model year?
Also these plaques look the same but placement AND what ASC left in the dash is strange. My car just has the plaque only without Z28 or IROC but placed higher than the ones with the Z28 or Camaro left in place.
4. Were ALL the Special Edition cars contracted directly with ASC or did some go through dealers OR possibly did you HAVE to go through a dealer in order to get your car sent off to ASC?
5. Were there at least 482+ people with that kind of cash laying around to buy a brand new $15,000 + car THEN send it off with an additional $4,000 to have it made into a Convertible? This is why I think they were program cars of some sort for financing & why not just order one of the 20th Anniversary cars if it was the same $? Possibly in the original GM deal they hadto.meet a certain # to fulfill the contact with ASC & certain cars were selected off the assembly line?
ANY information on this subject is appreciated.
I've read through the Firebird post & seems that would be a whole different discussion UNLESS the Bird lineup counted towards the total production #s of Special Edition cars but just not marked as such. Is it possible that some of the birds counted as Special Edition cars in the ASC Count and just not given a plaque?
We know there has to be a minimum of 482 made in some capacity but seems high to me. Could this also have been any ASC conversion done during this time frame & an assembly line #?
I'm yet to find 2 of the Special Editions with sequential numbers or even close.
We also could investigate build dates as well as VIN numbers to figure out more details.
I don't think these Special Editions are some rare cars but just ttop cars that have an additional $4,000 spent to be chopped up.
If you have a SPECIAL EDITION PLAQUE please post it up
Also was every Special Edition car marked with ASC on the dash as well as under the cigarette bezel (where a rear defrost switch was) OR only those cars that had an original rear defrost (which my RPO codes show mine as a non defrost car)?

Re: SPECIAL EDITION CONVERTIBLES ASC ONLY PLEASE
From what I was told by someone who worked for ASC and worked on the planning and in the production part of these cars, those stickers were Pretty much just slapped on there. They may or may not be in order, and they apparently did not differentiate between Firebirds And Camaros. When they ran out, they ran out. I believe based on my conversations with him, the numbers did not reset in 1987, so they started counting in 1986, and then continued into 1987 and possibly into early 1988, even though I do not recall any 1988's with the sticker.

Looks like this thread had been shocked back to life many times so I thought I would chime in and say I know where a 91 or 92 convertible Firebird is in a slavage yard for anyone looking for any specific pieces.
