1989 5.7L t-top iroc-z

Re: 1989 5.7L t-top iroc-z
The thing to do is look at the first 8 numbers in your Vin# and if the 8th number isn't an 8 we know it isn't a 350 or 5.7. If it is then you have an IROC, done. Then we can go from there if there isn't an 8 and assume it isn't the 350, next if that 8th digit is a E (L03) 5.0 or F (TPI) 5.0, then you have an IROC in 1989, unless you have a RS convertible which came that year with a E (L03) as the standard engine, just as the IROC did, unless you upgraded the engine, but still isn't an IROC without Z28 in your RPO sheet with the added IROC options. The last but least you want to find is that it is just 6 cylinders with an 8th digit as S (LB8) V6 then you know for sure you got burned as far as an IROC goes! Some day this will end...........

Thanks. I wasn’t sure because the car doesn’t have the normal Iroc-Z decals on the door. In place of the z28 emblems on the ground effects is a actual iroc z emblem. So just for confirmation. In 89 the 5.7L came standard for a iroc z? What are the iroc options in 89? The RPO codes for this car does have the 8th digit (8) and also has B2L, L98, & z28

Re: 1989 5.7L t-top iroc-z
From 85-87 the Iroc package was an added option on top of the Z28 package. 88-90 the Iroc package came standard on all Z28s.
From 88-90 the Iroc package was really little more than body color GFX, decals, and emblems. Since the typical Z28 became an Iroc, 15" wheels were available, and the TBI 305, etc.
For 88-90 Z28 in the RPO codes mean the car is an Iroc. So the RPOs match. The Z28 emblems on the rockers and rear bumper switched to Irocz emblems.
Sounds legit. Look in the RPO codes for CC1 for factory ttops, and DX3 for stripe/decal delete.

As has been mentioned, the "8" in the VIN confirms a 5.7L which was only available in an IROC-Z.
You also have the DX3 decal delete, but from the looks of your car, any factory applied decals would have been long gone. Also having the t-tops and confirmed by the SPID, it's a NON-G92 car. It left the factory with a single cat and 2.77 gear.

Nice project car if the underside and floorboards are ok. It needs IROC taillights BTW.

I'll never understand how anyone can leave a car just sitting around wasting away so long before deciding to sell it to somebody that will take care of it. I noticed today there's an IROC sitting in somebody's yard that has been there since like 2005. Just sad.

Why did you guys make that answer so difficult? Here's a few ways to know if it's an IROC-Z in 1989.
1. Does it have Z28 on the SPID label in the center console - YES
2. Does it have an 8 as the 8th digit of the VIN - YES
3. Does it have an F as the 8th digit of the VIN - YES
3. Does it have an E as the 8th digit of the VIN - Maybe
4. Does the door placard specify 16" wheels - YES
5. Does the door placard specify 15" wheels - Maybe
Not sure where yo soy was going with the L03 stuff. That engine was available on all models in 1989, coupe or convertible.

I guess I was just confused by yo soy el warg's post. I just skimmed over the rest until I got to the point where I could respond.

Yes Scott you are right the L03 was available on all models in 1989, but the 3,245 RS convertibles made that year were only available with the L03 V8 engine. But 83,487 RS coupes came standard with the LB8 V6 and you had to upgrade to the L03 V8 for an additional $400 which 46,715 did that year. Does that make it clearer?

Re: 1989 5.7L t-top iroc-z
E= 305 RPO L03 which was the base IROC in 1989 then you upgraded to the F=TPI and 8=350 if you paid for the options.
Yours also has the B2L RPO which is part of the 350, L98, and 8 in the Vin# package.

If it were a "G92" option, it would have dual cats and a 3.27 gear, ( as well as a KC4 oil cooler), but that couldn't be combined with t-tops in 1989.

SPID = Service Parts ID. It lists the options the car came with. A lot of the older cars had fender tags, but GM moved to these types of labels in the mid 80s.
If you look at what I posted, my YES was an answer to, "Do I have an IROC-Z?" Each line item is independent of the rest. It was not specific to this one car where the YES represented his answer to the question.

Not knowing the price, I'd still have to say "NO". I'm willing to spend more for a car to get one in better shape. Think about how much it'll cost to get new carpet, a new headliner, new seats, new paint, and whatever else has been neglected over the years. You're looking at probably $8k, plus the cost of the car to get this car in a reasonably decent condition. For that total cost, you can find better. Unless you're just looking for a project car to bring back to life!!!

$2500 is what he’s asking, non op and $97 for registration. He says it runs but not sure if it will pass smog. 5.7L

Re: 1989 5.7L t-top iroc-z
Looks rough but it could be saved. 50/50, I probably wouldnt give 2500 for it, but a person could do worse. Iroc values are high enough that you'd have room to dump a bit of money into it here and there and probably not end up upside down, but you could spend a good bit more from Start and get a turn-key nice car and just try to keep it that way.

Geez man, warn a guy before you say something that ridiculous. I could have been drinking when I saw the price on that pile. A person could spew frosty beverage all over the place.
Find something with good paint. Paint is going to cost you $3k-5k pretty easily. For $10,500 you can do a lot better than that Iroc with a new paint job.

Look around the classic car classifieds to get a ball park. One like:
https://www.cars-on-line.com/camaro.html
has a very good turn-around - some with dealers, which tend to be very overpriced but has many private sellers, also.
Condition is the key - 3rd gens that have low mileage, say 50-60k or less and excellent condition overall, 95% original, can run in the 15k's easily. But if you like projects these tend to range a lot less as I haven't seen too many in the $5-6K range that didn't need some sort of repair and restoration.
