V6 to V8 in my 83... few unknown wires! Help!
Swapping from a V6 to a V8 (non ECU carb) in my 83 Firebird.
Have these two on the C100 connector that are cut and not sure if I need to wire them somewhere.
Do I need C4 "brake warning system (v6 only)"or C6 "wiper/washer"?
My wiper has four wires and they're all connected already! Looking at the diagram I found this seems to be for "PULSE ONLY". I don't have intermittent... so that answers that.
The tan/white wire on the schematic says it's for "BRAKE PRESSURE SWITCH". Wouldn't the V8 car have this too though? If so, was it just in a different position on the C100? Confused why it says "V6 only" on the wiring key in the pics I posted.

Your car is an 83,... right ?? Seems like you might be working from the wrong C100 Schematic.
This one is from an 82 Camaro,... should look a lot more like your 83 harness than the schematic you've got now.
Gotta' be sure that you get those Wiper Wires correct,... the 82-83 system is NOT compatible with other years.

Hi John. I have the correct C100 as I copied it from my 83 factory service manual. I have a firebird remember!

I gotta' ask,.... (for my own sake ) are you sure that manual is for an 83 ?
I could have sworn that the 83 was the last year that 1 of the 2 'main' POWER DISTRIBUTION wires was located @ G4. ( the other is @ A4 ) I was pretty sure that is was moved to G5 starting in 84 and both P/D wires stayed @ A4 and G5 for the rest of thirdgen production thru 92.
I've also never seen the 'old' style wiper motor that didn't have a white wire. Then again, I've never had an 83 Firebird so,.........

Gotta keep acoupla things in mind when using FSMs:
I'd recommend you follow John's advice and get a 82 manual as well; and follow the schematic in whichever one more closely matters the particular part of your particular car you happen to be working on at the moment. Or 84. See if you have an early production sequence number or a late one, and use industrial mass-production common sense accordingly.
- They are printed at THE VERY BEGINNING of the model year, and thus, don't have ANY references to things that occurred later in the year. Look up ANYTHING about the L69 in your 83 manual for example.
- They ONLY tell about what the factory INTENDED TO DO, at the time. Won't tell you if they still had a whole shipload of last year's stuff still sitting on the shelf, and they consumed it during the early part of this year's production. See the 89-90 changeover from 26-spline axles to 28-spline for example.
- The same thing happens in reverse at the end of the production year. They may have changed over production of some component at the supplier, then run out of it at the assy plant, and dipped into nest year's design to finish the assy production run.
- It knows ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about anything that has been introduced later. Auto transmissions are arguably the easiest place to get screwed this way, which is why the ATSG manuals are ALWAYS better than the FSM for building transmissions. There are other things as well; for example in some motors with TTY head bolts, replacement bolts are DIFFERENT from OE, such that the torque spec in the FSM is DEAD WRONG for the replacements. Lesson here is, if you are using ANYTHING BUT OE parts, and you aren't within the normal warranty time frame for the vehicle (let's say, 3 - 5 yrs), then ignore the instructions in the FSM and follow what comes with the parts. (not that this particular point applies to this particular situation; but it comes up often enough that it's worth mentioning in a discussion of the benefits and pitfalls of FSMs)
I'd recommend you follow John's advice and get a 82 manual as well; and follow the schematic in whichever one more closely matters the particular part of your particular car you happen to be working on at the moment. I appreciate all the effort guys! But I don't have any issues with the pinout or schematic, everything seems to line up in the FSM with the wire colors and positions I have.
I just didn't know what those wire descriptions meant or if they were necessary when swapping in a non-ECU carb motor.

Figured one out! The DK GRN on C6 that says "WIPER WASHER" was for intermittent wipers, which I don't have.
Now just that TAN/WHT on C4. Updated the main post to be more clear.

Re: V6 to V8 in my 83... few unknown wires! Help!
Thanx for setting me straight here Aaron !
So; does your 83 Firebird use the large "early" style wiper motor or the smaller unit used on the 84-87 cars ??
Back to topic !
Your car was a V6 & I'm guessing that the Dash harness is original. If your using the original V6 Engine harness than it's a simple plug and play install for that BRAKE warning wire. ( just splice it back where it was.) If your using an 83 Firebird V8 Engine harness than you will need to move the ENGINE side of C100 from 'B2' to 'C4'. I've looked at just about every C100 diagram and the Brake warning is on 'B2' for all years / all cars from 84-89 and was moved to 'A5' starting in 90-thru 92.
P.S. Asking a favor here,... can you send me a PM with a couple good pics of the C100 Diagrams from your 83 service manual ?? I'd like to add it to my collection.

Re: V6 to V8 in my 83... few unknown wires! Help!
My 83 has the odd motor with the washer built in.
Yes, am I using the V6 harness. I can splice the wire back in for the warning light... but where does it plug into on the brake system?
And of course! I can try and get some good shots for you.

I think it should be on the side or bottom of the master cylinder

Cool,..... still learnin' things here on TGO ! Sure looks like an 82-83 style wiper running with 84-87 wiper wiring !!! I still wasn't "sure" because the 84-87 had washer pump in the cover too; the washer pump moved to the tank & the wiper wires moved to the headlight harness starting in 88.
Special shout-out for the schematic Aaron ! Thanx again and good luck dude !

Re: V6 to V8 in my 83... few unknown wires! Help!
Well, that connection on the brake master cylinder is already plugged in... I never disconnected it, so I know it's correct. The wire actually goes to the leftmost harness of the C100; not part of the engine harness. PLOT THICKENS! But honestly, just going to see what happens at this point. If something doesn't work, I'll investigate further then!
As for the wiper motor, I didn't realize there were so many variances! I thought there was the 82-83 style and then the later ones. Not sure which I have then.
