Question on changing out From R12 to 134a

I have a question, I own a 1984 Trans Am with a 305 H.O. with a 5 Spd.
My Trans am has Air Conditioning but does not work, no Freon ( R12 )in the system. I want to change it over to 134a.
I know I need to change the Drier and someone told me I should also change the Hoses,
Do I need to change the Compressor or anything else ???

You need to clean all the old oil out of the system

Re: Question on changing out From R12 to 134a

R134A hoses have a barrier liner in them. R12 didn't. I have seen videos at training seminars that show the 134A w/pag oil attacks the rubber hose. It is very advisable to replace the hose assembly(remember it is a 1984 hose). They do not cost that much. By the way with the cost of the freon and oil why would you risk loosing the charge to an old hose assy? When I change a system over I use an adjustable orifice tube. It allows the Freon to cool down at a faster rate during hot weather. If you do this to your system be sure to flush the system. Good luck

I changed over to 134 a few years ago on my 86, I didn't change the hoses(didn't know I had to) and the system still works good.

Mine was done at a a/c shop in NC.
They used the existing hoses.
Here is the conversion sticker the a/c shop applied:
