Return of The IROC
Wasn’t sure where to post this, but figured it may fit into “history” since someone is paying homage to Third Gens here..
Check this out and I’d be curious what everyone thinks?
Check out the video...

I don't hate it, but it's not my favorite either.
I always felt that bringing the IROC name back without the series for which it was named would be a mistake.

Re: Return of The IROC
Yeah, Im back and forth on it.. it's cool that he wants to pay homage and bought the trademark.. it's weird that GM never bought the trademark..
I'd like to see GM build a Camaro off the Thirdgen style.. it weirds me out that he's taking a car morphed off a first gen throwback and paying homage to thirdgens with it..
I like the passion, the wheels, the seats, badges, etc.. the performance seems pretty rad..

Overall it’s a nice car but its a 5th gen that’s based off the 1st gen so I don’t see how it’s close to looking like an IROC!? I appreciate the guys passion for 3rd gens and he seems like a legit car builder as well. I think GM will bring back the 3rd gen Camaro body style someday and then the real IRoC Z will return!!!

So without the series, why bother to call it the "IROC" ?

I expressed a strong comment about it and was told my basied input was noticed. I told them i wasn't biased since i like the ss 6th gens body cars, i just don't like what the guy did with the car and slapping the iroc name to it. Plus a lot of peoples comments on facebook about it were going saying things about the original cars that was false information.... As always, So that tells you something there when you express an opinion over a group of people that didn't really know what they were talking about. But to put in mildly I don't care so much at all about this 6th gen IROC. It looks wrong to me. I just made me miss my 88 that much more when i looked at this guys design.

Re: Return of The IROC
Didn’t need 700-1100 horsepower for the original IROCs to be fun..
You could say they’re paying homage to the race and the cars, but it’s clearly a use of nostalgia to bring back a brand in a new business venture.. I think the passion is there but it doesn’t feel right. And no IROC should be $100k+
Kinda sad GM would have to buy the name off this guy now to use it..
I do hope they make a thirdgen throwback after this gen Camaro..

Oh man, the ROOF!!!!!!! SEXY SEXY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
....but beyond that, I don't like it. To be fair, I don't like the 5th gen or the 6th gen. ...even bone stock, the lines are just all over the place. Hard to tell what's going on.
The 90s era Chrysler IROCS are more IROC than this in my opinion. I mean sure the name is cool, but...it's NOT associated with the race, so how is it an iroc? Just because he bought the name? I appreciate the sentiment, but I'll pass.
I'm a thirdgenner, so I pass on pretty much anything involving financial investment. Now THAT is IROC through and through!!!!!!!!!
On a side note, I really like a lot of what Six Liter Eater does, I just don't care for this.

I have been in contact with Mark of 6LE about making his new IROC wheel in 17'' and 18'' for thirdgens without spacers. He is moving into his new shop so I hope to hear back soon.

Re: Return of The IROC
You take away the IROC door decals and the dash badge and what you have is a 6th gen Camaro. There is nothing in the hood or any other part of the car that's 3rd gen. His vision and mine are complete opposite. I personally have never seen the resemblance in the 5th gen to the 1st gen either. Ford nailed the Mustang when they came out in 2005. Dodge nailed the remake of the Challenger. Chevy screwed up the Camaro, design wise. Technology is great sometimes, but I have no need for a 700-1100 HP street car. It's a car for roads with speed limits on them. None of these new, modern, brand, cars are made for the drag strip either, so whats the point.

Agreed.. his homage to Third Gens seems to be a stretch on this car.. the rims are the only thing I can “see”.. he could’ve done better with the hood louvers, the spoiler and even changed the nose more..
Speaking of Rims.. I’m personally not a fan of anything bigger than 17” on thirdgens.. The stock 16”s look perfect to me..

Re: Return of The IROC
I love it, especially the hood and the glass roof. And I think the thought process and the detail put into the car are excellent. But I think people are missing the point.
There isn't supposed to be anything "3rdgen" about it. The details are IROC-specific, not 3rdgen-specific. And the goal, as I see it, was to build a modern day version of the IROC. In otherwords, if the IROC series were to return right now, and the Camaro was once again selected to be the car, then what would GM design and build? What would it look like? And I think this guy nailed it, right down to the style of the IROC-Z graphics, which are in the style of the ZL1. I doubt that GM would be able to do it any better than this. It's a beautiful car.
Sounds like he's even going to have his own little IROC race too, when more of them have been built. That should be a fun time in these beasts.

Re: Return of The IROC
Sooo I've been eyeballin' those wheels since they leaked a few weeks ago. I was disappointed to see they were only in larger sizes. I will say that if I were to update the IROC wheel, this is NOT what I would've done. ...it's no IROC wheel. Still, it's pretty sharp. At this early stage, I'll go as far as to say I'd be interested. What I REALLY want are some wide 16" tires so I can widen my stockers. In the meantime.....I'd seriously consider these if they came to market.

Re: Return of The IROC
The IROC-Z was based on a road racing series. The 1LE was originally available on the IROC-Z only. I would think the closest thing GM could come up with to replicate the IROC-Z heritage is the new 1LE. It could have specific exterior/interior appointments taht are only available on that car. Special wheels, emblems/decals, etc, could be added to define the car more.
The problem is that GM screwed up the 5th gen and the 6th gen models. Instead of the Z28 being the track car that it used to be, they brought out the SS as that car. Back in 2010, the SS had all of the capability of the old SS, the Z28. They then returned the Z28 model as an overpriced car, not much different than the SS in it's capabilities. Then they also brought back the ZL1 and the 1LE.
What they should've done, was bring back the Z28 as a bare bones style car (1SS) with suspension upgrades, the SS model (2SS) with convenience/luxury upgrades, then build the option list from there. The 1LE could have been a special package on the 1SS that improved it's track capability and provided better brakes. The ZL1 should have been what the COPO is today. The track only, drag strip car!!

I find the looks of the 6th gen Camaro to be very disappointing. Adding an ugly hood and graphics to it doesn't get me more excited. Two thumbs down.

Re: Return of The IROC
I agree the 5th/6th gen Z28 should have been the base performance model.
The 6th gen fails with the narrow glass.
The new IROC does not fit the original IROC-Z format, neither styling nor branding.
I think people loved the original 85+ car before ever seeing the name on the lower doors.

I wasn’t crazy about it initally, and still not a fan, but I do like the fact that the guy appreciates 3rd gens enough to spend the time and money to make that car happen. I do like the wheels and that roof is insane.
But IMO the front looks too much like a ZL1 to me, and there’s too many vents and black accents on the hood and front end. Also the skirts look like something that came from that isle in autozone and are held on with 3m tape.

Re: Return of The IROC
I'm in San Diego a few days. Rented this 2016 SS. It's sick, man. Sick. After this car I don't care what they call any of the Camaros. SS works. Z28 more fun. IROC irrelevant. (But glass could still be taller. Helps when top is down. But seat in low position I can't see the end of the hood. Seat up and the top windshield frame takes away from what you can see.)
Once again, to stay on topic, after driving one:
SS works;
Z28 more fun;
IROC irrelevant.
Maybe would change my tune if the new IROC wasn't that blue-green color. Should have went with an original IROC color.

Re: Return of The IROC
I've commented on the 6th gen forum. Overall I really like the car.
hood, widebody, wheels are all very cool
glass roof is really cool, but not my style
Price- way out of my league
performance sounds like it will be pretty impressive.
I think people are really hung up on the fact that it is an IROC tribute car. Everyone, especially people on this forum (third gen owners and enthusiasts) probably have a strong opinion on what an IROC tribute should be or if one should exist at all.
More than anything else the IROC is associated with the third gen Camaro. I would say to most people it is more associated with the Camaro than the actual race series. I honestly wouldn't care much about the race series if the Camaro wasn't intertwined within it.
These guys can't actually resurrect the race series (although one of the comments above indicates they may have a race series associated with the cars I doubt it will be NASCAR, Indycar etc drivers). With the 6th gen there is only so much you can do to pay homage to the third gen cars.
I've heard a lot of reasons to dismiss the car:
If it's not from GM
If there is no race car/ series
If it doesn't look like a third gen
If the price is too high
I for one am glad he is passionate enough to build the car and I think he did a lot of really great things. It's not exactly what I would build but it doesn't have to be. I think it's cool.

Re: Return of The IROC
5th and 6th and whatever generation Camaros are just ugly. Underneath the name plates and corporate styling it's STILL just that hideous GTO concept car from the late 90s. You know, the one so ugly it wasn't really a GTO, and now it's not really a Camaro... Just keep strapping on stupid design accents until it's truly an abomination in plastic and steel. Oh and don't forget some gills or rally stripes to remind people it's supposed to be a "retro" design...

Re: Return of The IROC
Chevy already re-imagined the IROC wheel on a... whatever generation. Seems like no one even noticed, at least I've never heard anyone point out that one of these wheels is an exact copy of the 85-87 Iroc wheel.
But I have to be honest, I'm diggin that 6LE Iroc wheel. No...it's not really IROC per se, which is why I was initially skeptical, but taken on it's own accord....I actually really dig it.

I think no one ever mentioned it because no one sees them as IROC wheels re-imagined, including Chevrolet. I see 5 spokes, in different flavors. A design that goes back into the '60s at least.

Gen 6 is my 2nd least favorite Camaro gen. My least favorite? 5.
Check out a concept sketch for Gen 6:
That may be more deserving of the IROC name.

That’s kinda cool..
So can’t they not put license plates between the taillights anymore?
One of my favorite parts of Third Gens is how the taillights look.. it seems they are hung up on putting the license plate in the rear bumper and they also don’t use yellow for turn signals anymore..
I almost think the new Vette taillights remind me more of thirdgens for some reason than any other taillights I see..
This concept drawing reminds me of a 2nd gen from the side and an Acura NSX from the back..

Re: Return of The IROC
I wonder what it would cost GM to buy the name IROC back. If, and thats a big fat if, Nascar decided to bring back the "IROC" series then there would have to be a lot of talks between GM and Nascar about how to proceed. I bet GM would ask Nascar to help foot the bill to pay to get the name back.
My personal opinion, Leave the Iroc name alone. Let it be an iconic name that is only associated with the 85-90 thirdgens.
6LE Designs did a lousy job on that car. Anyone with a 6th gen and a check book can replicate that in short time.
