Shoddy Coolant Flush

I recently put my 89 IROC TPI in the shop for a coolant flush and a trans flush. The coolant in the radiator seems clean but, the coolant in the resivoir is murky and the sidewalls still have the gunk on them. Is this not part of a coolant flush? I feel like I might be getting gyped. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Ragin.

Just pop the tank off and rinse it out. Not worth getting worked up about.

Re: Shoddy Coolant Flush

It's very hard to get the gunk off the inside of the overflow bottle. And it seems to be where the gunk will settle out also. I took mine off, and filled it with random screws, and some powdered dish detergent, covered the opening with my palm and shook it for about 20 minutes. Still not completely clean but better.

I have flushed my system three times now and it is just starting to stay green. I'm sure the shop will tell you - depending on how dirty the system is, it may take half a dozen or more flushes to get it clean.

Just the way it is. Welcome to iron engine blocks.

Re: Shoddy Coolant Flush

The coolant in the radiator was very clean, as it turns out they never took the overflow tank out. I went back and made the guys at the shop stay late and finish the job. The tank isn't perfect but, everythingn is in working order and my cooling flush and trans flush are done (3 week owner). I just need to find and fix the heat shield rattle and decide if it's the rear main or oil pan that's leaking... then do front struts. Ahhh the joys of classic car ownership.... it sure does look and sound cool (minus the exhaust rattle) but everything is 28yrs old and needs attention.

Beautiful car you have there.

If you do not have them yet, new tanks
make a huge difference.
