Re: Restoring interior plastic and carpet how-to
Just found this thread! I'll be calling BAPS next week to see if they can mix me some Medium Dark Grey.
I just finished cleaning all of my interior plastics while my car is in the paint shop, yeah, it's more faded than I thought, especially compared to an NOS piece I have.
I'll for sure be doing this to refresh my grey interior!!!!!!!

Re: Restoring interior plastic and carpet how-to
After reading this post I re-dyed the interior on my 82 four years ago with similar results. The interior was in good solid condition, however over the years the colors had faded at different rates leaving the interior looking miss-matched. The interior still looks great today! The dye adheres to the fabric and carpet well and has not required any touch up. The dye does adhere well to the plastic, but not as well as it does to the fabric. A few small scuffs to the door sills and one place in the rear of the car has needed touch up. A cooler slid over and scratched a small spot about a 1/2 inch long in the storage well. Touch up is easy and invisible when completed. The best part is that the interior parts match better now than they did when the car was new. Considering alternatives this is a great method to restore a faded interior.

I used your method all the way down to the PPG dye with the exception of I had it mixed and used my gun to spray it. It looks amazing, thank you for sharing this.

Different products since I'm not in the US, and different car ('79 Mustang), but same method here. I used a product called Vinylkote by Plastikolor, it comes in any RAL color, but can be special ordered in a custom color at a premium price. You can get a minimum of two spray cans, or a liter to apply with a gun. Two cans did the entire interior.
The interior was in good condition, but the red plastics had turned pink and the carpet was fading to orange. The color is a near exact match to an RAL color so no need for a custom order :
It needs to be applied in thin coats :
End result, I applied it on the carpet as well in the most faded parts and on the plastic piece on the driver seat, it worked great and the carpet stayed smooth :

I've got the Duplicolor vinyl & fabric on the way to switch from tan to black/charcoal gray. I'm excited to be done with the tan!

I might do this to my interior in the next year or two. How much does BAPS charge to mix up some interior dye?

A quart of PPG was $119 with activator and I've got probably half the can left.

Re: Restoring interior plastic and carpet how-to
Here's to the thread that never ends, it goes on and on and on my friends. . .
The car is an original Arizona car so every piece of plastic was faded to varying degrees. BAPS to the rescue. I even painted the seat frames with original interior black. Stuff works great.
Note:You can see faint lines on the hatch plastics which is from the glue they used to hold the carpet on with the Deluxe interior.

Dash support and seat frame after welding the broken corner.
Note: I should add that I used rust converter on the seat frames after scrubbing them with a water based degreaser and a scotch-brite

Re: Restoring interior plastic and carpet how-to
Hello all,
I was poking around the forums looking for tips on painting my interior trim and found this. Guess I'm bringing the thread back from the dead once again!
I apologize if I'm beating the dead horse but I'd like to confirm a couple things/get some assistance.
From reading through the thread it seems BAPS is probably the best place to order the dye from...is that still the general consensus?
Hawk, and others who've done this; after a good 8 or 9 years how's the interior holding up? Any signs of needing another coat of dye?
Lastly, and this is the annoying part. I'd like to confirm that I have the correct RPO codes so that I can order the paint for my car.
I have an 84 Camaro Sport Coupe with blue vinyl interior and blue plastic trim. I believe the RPO code that I need is either 22I or 22R, could some of your more God status camaro experts confirm or correct this?
Thanks in advance! BTW, just to throw my $.02 in the ring (for what it's worth) STICKY!!!!

Re: Restoring interior plastic and carpet how-to
This video came up recently and I found it very insightful:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ke57Vxj_SeM&t
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ke57Vxj_SeM&t
I'm personally focused on the interior plastic, specifically the area under the trunk lid. Unfortunately the sun had taken its toll on my car and my once blue trim pieces are faded to almost entirely gray (bare plastic) to the point you can brush your hand across some pieces and it feels like sand
So I was really looking for some advice on matching my paint color and curious how well Hawks method stood the test of time as mentioned above
VERY interesting video though, I'll have to keep it in mind for other cars, thanks for sharing!
