Re: Autoform Roadster Registry
Hello, my father has one of these autoform trans am's. Its an '84 and he bought it in the early 90s . Its been in the garage for years, probably late 90s. I found this forum with hopes of getting an idea of what these are worth, because hes been talking about selling it. Any help would be much appreciated, and this week I was hoping to run up to where the car is and taking pics etc. I do have some, but they are in photo albums somewhere! Thanks guys. Car is in Maryland...

Re: Autoform Roadster Registry
The prices are all over the board... it comes down to condition ....
I have two 1983 z28's... one I paid 3K for the other 1k....
When they are complete hope to get 10k each... but they are going to have to be
perfect for that kind of return.. and what you are going to have to find is someone
who wants a car that is totally different than everyone else.

The third-generation F-body is like the Led Zeppelin of Chevrolets – It has morphed and molded into every genre of in its wheelhouse, but we rarely see one like this. This 1983 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 features a unique conversion by the now-defunct Auto Form Corporation, who converted hardtop F-bodies into these two-seater roadsters. Similar to the four-seat convertibles produced by American Specialty Cars (ASC) for GM, the Auto Form roadsters were custom-built to order. GM would dropship a car to Auto Form, who would handle the conversion before shipping the car to the GM dealer, with a customer ready and waiting.

Auto Form took those factory-fresh F-bodies, and immediately cut the roofs off. A massive chassis brace was welded in behind the front seats, tying the floor and door sills together. Additionally, a bolt-in chassis brace was added under the car to help return some rigidity – as much as you could expect from a third-generation Camaro – back into the chassis.

The new hole was then capped with the custom two-layer fiberglass top you see, which used custom hinges in conjunction with the original hatchback’s lift struts to open, allowing a small convertible roof to be manually closed over the front seats. It used a fiberglass roof top, then used more traditional convertible roof material to enclose the cabin. What’s unique with the Auto Form conversion, compared to most of these third-party conversions, is that it is a manual convertible top, as opposed to the powered convertible tops from ASC. When the manual top was down, it folded into a compartment where the rear seats once resided.
Though the company is now gone, it’s estimated that only a fewer than 1,000 were ever produced, both in Camaro and Firebird forms. The original conversions cost around $5,500, or about $13,000 in today’s dollars, adjusting for inflation – nearly a third of the third-generation Z28’s original purchase price.
However, using that inflated value, you can now own an Auto Form Camaro for just the price of the conversion!

While the seller has ripped-off most of the ad’s information, this particular Camaro has 198,000 miles on the odometer, and still holds its original Cross Fire Injection 305 ci under the hood. The Craigslist ad hails from Newport, North Carolina, and the price is currently at $15,000.

Re: Autoform Roadster Registry
I found one just North of Memphis, TN. They posted it up here in Green Bay, but I'm from Memphis so I know where he's at. Looks like it's too customized and too expensive for what these are worth.

Re: Autoform Roadster Registry
Hey guys, I just bought one of these this past weekend here locally. I should be bringing it home here in a few weeks.
I had a question about the rear latch lid (not sure what it's called) the lid closes but the latch never engages...is there a way to adjust that latch up or down so that it can meet the lid and seat properly?
I assume with this being a customized car and with Autoform out of business that it's going to take some 'engineering' to get the parts for this thing.

Re: Autoform Roadster Registry
It's running great now...I got most of the kinks worked out and the carb rebuilt. I have been driving it almost everyday (weather permitting)
I need to find where to get 2 replacement snaps for the top, some paint and I need to find some new window sweeps but other than that it's doing great.
I got a new radio to put in it so I can listen to satellite radio as well.

Re: Autoform Roadster Registry
Hi Slimwhitman.
Hopefully thhis forum is still active. It is now August 19th 2018. Last month, I purchased the AFC6-00576 Pontiac TA. It now has about 13,147 miles. Even with those low miles, appears no one keep it updated. Air did not work, still R-12, now converted, Calaber leaking, replaced, all upper snaps replaced. can not get hatch lid to open but working on that. Trunk did not open either, some one pried on both trunk lid and Hatch lid trying to get them open. Trunk lid, use cloth and screw driver, the strut or whata ever one calls it was bad, replaced. Paint over all is bad, especially what Auto Form did. They should have painted it all then it all would be bad. Plan on repainting it sometime.
afc6-00576 is Blue, not black. For most part, every thing seems to work.
I am registered in the forum just as AFC6-0576.
70's Dragstripper, 69 Vette, 427, 390 HP but no one stock either A or B stock could touch it.
Had aluminin heads? Never did check if they came with 390 HP. Wife raced a 67 Buick Rev 430-4
70 Nova, Grand Prix with 73 455. and a few more. CB handle, Dragstripper!
Vietnam Vet, 7/4/67 to 7/4/68. Now have ALS, Heart, skin problems from just 6 months in the chemicals.
Best to All.

SOMEONE11,
Can you please post a photo of your build sheet?
Perhaps specifically the area of box 107, the big area with all the RPO codes?
Thank you!

Re: Autoform Roadster Registry
This is long overdue. It’s time to see if we can get owners (and sellers) of these Autoform roadsters to post info on their cars.
This should be easy, since Autoform placed an I.D. label in the driver side door opening. Here is what we need from you:
1. Model year:
2. Model: (Firebird, TA, Formula, Berlinetta, Z28, etc)
3. Color:
4. Autoform Production # on door:
5. Date of conversion:
6. Location of conversion (Bremen, IN or Elkhart, IN or ??)
If you find one for sale or at a car show, please get the AutoForm number and add it to this registry.
And….don’t forget photos(if possible)!! You can add more info if you like.
I am hoping we can find some trends and start to interpolate production numbers.

Re: Autoform Roadster Registry
I actually talked to the previous owner of my car who bought it originally. He was the owner of the Chevy dealership. He said they would get the car at the dealership and immediately ship it off to autoform to get the conversion done.

Re: Autoform Roadster Registry
Hello, bought my 1985 IROC-Z Autoform roller in 2015. It needs the entire drivetrain and interior done. But its all there. Unfortunately the sticker is not on the door. But I do have the title for it which confirms it is a true 1985 IROC-Z. Im located in Mount Pleasant, Michigan.

Re: Autoform Roadster Registry
I met a gentleman in Florida over the holidays. Talked to him about his car. It’s a 1982 TransAm. He ordered it new and after having it a while he saw the cover of High Performance Pontiac featuring an Autoform convertible. He contacted Autoform and they told him he had to go through the Pontiac dealer to get his car converted. He did and received his car two weeks and $5500 later. It has a 305 with a 4-speed. Only 53k miles.
