Bud's 1986 Camaro IROC-Z
I'm new here, my name's Bud. For a while now I've been looking for a nice third gen to buy and I've been watching the forums here looking at ideas for it. Finally, I found one this past week!
She's an '86 IROC-Z! 305 FI, Auto, T Top, 70k original miles!

Welcome aboard Bud!
You've got several central Illinois forum members around you (I'm and ex-pat myself). I'm glad you found the car you were looking for.

Re: Bud's 86 IROC Z Build
Thanks guys! I would like to know if there's anyone in the central IL area with Third Gens that goes to cruise-ins and shows, as I do a lot during the spring and summer.
As for my IROC, she needs a couple little things, like a headliner and some miscellaneous interior parts. Exhaust is probably first on my list of actual mods, undecided on what I want so far. Other than that, just going to give her an all around tune up and oil change here soon!

Hello and welcome, I'm a bit south of springfield IL. There is a group on FB that gets together a couple times a yr in springfield. Think the next one is in June sometime.

Great car Bud. Whatever brand exhaust you go with id certainly make it a 3in exhaust. It will sound great and you will be very happy with it.

I am in Peoria. I went to one car show last year and it was boring. I might be game for a cruise but no more car shows.

Re: Bud's 86 IROC Z Build
A bit of an update. The aftermarket stereo in the car barely worked, so I swapped it out last week for a new one that works much better.
Also replaced the "bowtie" grille the last owner installed, with a brand new "Camaro" grille. It seems most people like the bowtie grille, but I actually like the Camaro grille better.

I kinda figured you may like the Flowmaster 3in system. I know I like it on my car.

Re: Bud's 86 IROC Z Build
Big update: Over the last month I've installed some more interior parts, including new sail panels, coat hooks, and seat belt trim.
The biggest update, however, is that after much debate between myself and my friends, I decided to put the IROC stripes on! The installation went pretty well, with the exception of a couple small creases where I screwed up. Here's some pics of the car with stripes...
Also added the TPI decals because it's the little things that count!

Hi there,
Absolutely LOVE that car/color combination! That's the one I wanted back in 1987, but couldn't get a dealership to take me seriously! Long story about that one. I agree with your choice of the stripes, I think it gives it a nice finished look. Enjoy the hell out of it, you're enjoying it for me too. [jealous a little bit]

Thanks guys!
It wasn't cheap lol... $400 for it, but it's all new leather and really nice quality. The leather on mine was coming apart so I went ahead and spent the money.

Re: Bud's 86 IROC Z Build
Update:
Been driving her quite a lot lately with this beautiful weather! Also been working on a few things...
Did a tune-up on her a couple weeks back...changed out spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor, and changed the oil again.
I've got new shocks and struts, among several other parts, sitting in my house waiting to be installed, hopefully soon!
Big thing lately, however, has been the interior. It's really coming together! Installed new visors, seat belt lower retainers, top rails on the door panels, fixed the dome light not fitting properly, and got a set of factory style floor mats! Some pictures below:

Minor update. Since Photobucket decided to hide all my pics, here's a couple from the last few days! Recently did a coolant flush and fill on the car, also replaced the coolant sensor for the ECM which started throwing an engine light. She's all set now!

Nice!
Coolant is an easy one to forget. I need to change mine, now that you mention it.

Re: Bud's 86 IROC Z Build
Yep, mine had some crap in it so I figured it would benefit. Also failed to mention I replaced the thermostat and gasket, as well as one radiator hose. Small update for this week as well. I bought a new reproduction T top bag for now since my original one is ripped. And I also fixed my coolant temperature gauge. The needle kept pegging itself behind the gauge surround piece every time I started the car, so I got a tiny piece of vacuum hose, cut a slit in it, and stuck it on the edge so the needle doesn't get itself stuck anymore lol!

The bag looks like a nice piece. Work gauge is a win for sure. And a free fix to boot.

Update here. I parked my baby for the winter back at the end of October. Over the last few months I hadn't been posting, I did a few things on her. Changed out the front brakes and bearings, did some minor interior tweaks and fixes, and had a lot of fun with her at car shows! Here are some photos from the last few months before I parked her.

Re: Bud's 86 IROC Z Build
Recently brought her out of hibernation for some nice weather! There are a couple minor updates on her since she was parked in October. I got factory style turn signal housings and orange side markers instead of the clear ones that were on the car. I also replaced some vents inside the car and installed new insulation on the underside of the hood! Here are a few pics from the other day!
