ANy one who has used the Turbo XS headers
So im literally hours away from starting my motor ive been building for a year and a half. I end up building a forged scat wiesco 383 8:5.1 CR, turbo xs headers w/ gt45 turbo, dart heads CC cam & rr , single plane intake 4150 TB 80lbs injectors and EFI connections LS1 24x system with HP tuners.
For me , this been a long build . I go to mount my starter . Its smacking the turbo XS headers cross over pipe. My fly wheel is 168 tooth the larger fly wheel .
Will a mini starter remedy my problem? Any one else ever in the same boat as me . What starter did you use?

most ppl have to cut the crossover off and reweld it to clear everything

Re: ANy one who has used the Turbo XS headers
If I was to recut and weld anything it would end up being the passenger side header.
This sucks Ive already tig welded and wrapped the whole exhaust .
Considering the amount of welding it took to get these to work , for me I should of just made my own.

Re: ANy one who has used the Turbo XS headers
Not sure if you can tell but this isnt a third gen its a lifted gmt400 . You guys have more experience using these headers considering they were made for your cars than any one else. See how it hits the vband and the holes are cocked . If either the starter was shorter or thinner OD I would be ok.
I pulled the plug and bought this starter. The motors smaller than the solenoid , 360 degrees clockable and at my 8:5.1 compression I should be just fine. Lets hope it fits. I really dont want to cut and weld.

Re: ANy one who has used the Turbo XS headers
If you're running the single turbo XS system that replicated the old BBS setup, then yes, the two main issues were that some of the primaries were in the way (on 3rd gens), and the need for a LT1 or mini starter to clear the passenger side header...

Re: ANy one who has used the Turbo XS headers
Which turbo system are you running? I see you have an O2 bung on the passenger side header, did you put that there? The single turbo XS systems have them on the stock location by the drivers side. Did you also add the v-band flange on the passenger side, or did XS -Power update the system, finally?

The turbos are on the passenger side Just like this thread. There are two others who have them on the passenger side. You would hit your steering column if it was the other way

Re: ANy one who has used the Turbo XS headers
Not to mention, I think you answered your own question as to why it is hitting;
The v-band looks to be hitting the starter. There is a reason XS didn't add the v-band there. I would recommend installing the starter first, then the header, and see if that allows it to clear. If not, it needs to be cut and rewelded, perhaps extend the lower side of the passenger header by an inch or two, then weld the v-band flange. The O2 as well, try to weld the bung so that it faces the rear of the car, not clocked towards the starter...

Turbo XS gives you the V-band to install there. I didnt cut or rewok the bottom of the header.
Ive talked with a few people and found out. The vband is in the right spot. The problem is the kit was designed to be ran with a 153t fly wheel and starter . Mines a newer 168t. Guys who do the vortec swap using the 168t flywheel have to buy a mini starter . That will give you the clearance .
needed.
I cant mess with much . Im 4x4 . I have a transfer case drive shaft and different oil pan then you . Ive already had to notch out my oil pan to run the cross over pipe.
Thanks for the suggestion though.

Re: ANy one who has used the Turbo XS headers
I see what you mean. Trial and error, you'll finalize it sooner or later. I wasn't too thrilled when I ran my XS-Power single turbo system, but back when I had it, it was under a different name. I wound up hacking an old Edelbrock tubular system and made my own after all was said and done. Your build sounds really cool, do you have any engine bay shots by any chance?

Re: ANy one who has used the Turbo XS headers
You can go through this link and see the whole build . Ill link it at the bottom.
The blocks from summit. Forged stroker crank and 6 " rods from scat. Forged 2618 pistons are from Wiseco. Im running comp cams 280xfi roller cam advanced 2 more degreed on top of there 4. Comps adjustable double roller timing gear. Single plane EFI intake, 4 barrel 4150 1300 cfm throttle body , with fuel rails , 340lph pump and adjustable fuel pressure regulator . Simen deka 80lbs injectors are squirting into assault 200cc dart knock off cylinder heads, ringed with copper head gasket running 8:5.1 compression. Comp valves , comp hardened push rods, beehive springs and comp magnum roller rockers.
LS1 coil over plug 1mb 24x ecu , efi connections 24x double roller reluctor , hp tuners controls it all , ls6 card style maf , 3.5" huge FMIC . GT45 single turbo wrapped in high temp lava exhaust wrap.
I rebuilt my 4l60e with hp clutches vett servo red reverse band transgo shift kit and lsx style valve body from a 99 and monster sun gear. Trans cooler consists of 19 row bar and plate style cooler . All fluids are plumbed with -AN line.
I lifted the yukon with rough country's 6" lift kit and wraped my set of ballistic jester rims with set dick cepeck 35" fun country 2s.
Fresh paint job, swapped grilles, windshield visor, 52" led bar trail lights, 12k winch and fender flares.
Allot people will say my turbos to small for a 383 with 6" rods. I have a 4500 lbs full size 4x4 im looking for instant boost for low down tq not hi rpm HP. No doubt I could make more power with a larger turbo but at the cost of boost lag. Im not looking to drive a drag car but a tow rig. Theres allot more I have to do still .

Re: ANy one who has used the Turbo XS headers
i ended up cutting the manifold that the turbo mounts to where the crossover comes up a few inches above the starter. i cut 3/4 though the piping and bent it away from the starter the welded a filler piece to fill the gap. Then on the bottom section that crosses over i installed a flex pipe section about 4 inches long. Takes some welding but nothing the TIG 200 cant handle youll get it.

i went though your build and it looks awesome i would reconsider your waste gate location... hot rod mag had issues with the size and location not being able to control boost very well. but they did make a ton of power with all that boost lol

Thanks for the compliment.
I rarely use the tig 200 any more The Powertig 250ex is 100x the tig the eastwood will ever be but also almost 3x the price.
This isnt my first rodeo with turbo cars.
Yes the Wastegate could be better placed. Heres the thing . I wont be using the waste gate much so it doesnt matter . My engine is set up to live at high boost pressures with out it it will be a dog. 30 psi plus.
Here is a something ive learned from other builds and reading.
You need a large waste gate when using low boost to properly bleed off the gas so not to have boost creep. So you dont blow your motor up.
When using high boost you need a small wastegate because you wont really need to bleed much exhaust off. Thats pretty much the industry standard. Dont beielve every one when they tell you you need the biggest 65mm wastegate that shoots golden **** nuggets as you drive. Thats why different sizes are made
If I cant control boost with the wate gate now Ive decided to keep the one there and add another to the cross over tube very least it right by my dump and easy to tie into.

ur going to love the power it makes with those heads , u will max out that gt45 easy, i see an bw s47 or s480 in ur future

Re: ANy one who has used the Turbo XS headers
WHat ever it takes not to detonate .
. If the motor is near detonating ill back ignition timing down ,add octane or adjust cam timing. If it has boost creep ill fix my waste gate issues.
Im not going to bench race my engine theres no point. Ill fix what i must to have a safe motor.
The size of load is what makes the difference , not the act of towing. It will be used for other stuff besides towing , trails , overlanding, getting grocery's.
I can tell . Even though I dont post much in your thread I follow it faithfully . I see they have treated you good.
We will see . If I need to go larger I will. I just didnt want to do like most and go so large I was disappointed. I seen a similar combo like my 383 where the guy maxed out the gt45 and couldn't make more than 15 psi. Boost was literally instant though.

i think u will get 10-14 psi out of that gt45 before its out of airflow , its only good for 5-600hp

Re: ANy one who has used the Turbo XS headers
I more concerned with TQ , HP will follow. I have stock 4 bolt sbc roller block. I dont want so much power I destroy the block. I would be happy at 850-900hp safely.
I still have to do so much even after its running. The truck still has the stock 10 bolt rear end with 3.73 gears . Between the power and tire size the 10b rear is sure to blow up or very least snap axles.
I have a new 9 inch rear end here that needs to be welded .
Im not sure if the 340 lph pump will even keep up.
At this point im trying to start the motor to break it in.
Your in Utah right? Ever make it out to moab? Its one of my bucket list places to go.

Thats around what ive seen & read. I do have the larger GT45 . Theres a few on the board I frequent that have gotten a tab bit over 700 with video of dyno run. Ive already been looking at precision turbos. Cant really decide until i have some data loging to look at though.

People save there whole life , build extravagant rigs to go visit moab . Your right there . I wish.
Ive seen your pictures on your bike . Its beautiful there. I live in the city not a spec of wooded area. I really dislike it. There are so many times I wish I could just pick up and move out west in general or up to Alaska. Everything the North East isnt. Democracy turned into Communism.

Re: ANy one who has used the Turbo XS headers
yeah we have so many nic eplaces to ride its probably the reason i havent been to moab or any of the other spots yet.
the only bad thing is if u out alone and u wreck out here it could be a long time before somone finds u.
i wrecked 2 years ago and got very lucky , broken foot, fingers , broke collar bone in half and seperated it from my shoulder , was able to ride about 20 miles down the mountian to one of the highways were i finaly collapsed and a car going by happened to see and stopped and called it in
i tend not to ride alone now , unless somone knows were ill be riding and in that case i stick specifically to the trails i tell them ill be on , when its me and a friend(s) we just go out and explore and never know were the hell we will end up
this summer i made make the 300 mile trip on the dirtbike from my town to las vegas ( 300 miles down the highway , so figure 400+ on the trails )

I cant wait for my truck to be finished to hit some trails. We are already looking for a fifth wheel camper.

Re: ANy one who has used the Turbo XS headers
So if any one stumbles upon this I want to let them know the new starter works great . Its very adjustable also.
Besides having to move the O2 sensor that I previously welded in everything is perfect. The 02 is my fault I should have waited untill I had it more together.
