85 trans am head lights won't pop up
Ok I picked up an 85 t/a and the head lights won't come up. The passenger worked, but not the driver. So I swapped the motor out. I have pulled apart the dash and opened the switch which looks okay. I can hear the relays clicking, but they only go down, not up. If I put them up they go back down. What else could be my problem?
Thanks guys.

If you hear the motors and relays working then the gears/guts/bushings
are shot. Common issue and easy fix tho!

The headlight module on the firewall could be a possibility. Had a issue couple years ago, lights would turn on, but lights wouldn't flip up. I jiggled the headlight module and out of no where they just popped up. Might be something to look at.

I don't think this has a module. At lest not in the spot it should be. It has the relay set up in the lights, and the side mounted relays. I replaced the side ones and when I put power to them up they go. I have gone out and bought two switches. No dice. Some how I am not getting power to the side relays. The fuses are good.

Ok I got it done. All that for the isolator relay that is no longer made! Some dummy stuck it in one of the head light sockets and burnt up the diode. Went to radio shack and grabbed a 3.49 bag of 25 diodes and soldered one in. All good now. I should start making replacements of these. I seen where others are using two relays and a diode which you don't need to do. That's too much work I think. Don't need to make a new Circuit I think. Lost two days tracking this down. Oh well.

You still have a Radio Shack? I think they closed all of them in my state. Didn't know they left any stores open.
My 86 did not have a headlight module so makes sense that an 85 wouldn't. Had one on my 92 I used to have and it worked 50% of the time. I would NOT recommend the headlight module to you fellow thirdgen owners.
FYI - I just used normal 30 amp automotive relays without diodes for my headlight motors. I replaced them 10 years ago so don't remember exactly how I wired it up.
Looks like you got it fixed so all's good.
