You're going to have to pick up a 400 air cleaner from a 70-79 TA, the stock 3 gen wont work, or make your own. also WFO have custom shaker bases you can find them at YearOne and Classic Industries I think.
How did you guys attach the top half to the bottom half. I don't think anyone ever said. I know the original ones had a big ring that held the 2 halves together.
I took an original 2nd gen ring, drilled out the rivets holding one end on, cut the ring to size, riveted the end back on and it worked nicely.
Nothing at this point as the car was completely disassembled for new paint right after I finished the mock-up of the shaker. Then other priorities happened and the project has been on hold since.
The second gen T/As had something like 13 different shaker scoops. 70-72 had functional shakers with two solenoids that opened the flapper. 70-76 had the same looking shaker then from 77-81 looked the same but had many different configurations. The early 77 sat very low so they made a late 77 through 79 shaker and the 400 was different than the 403. The 4.9 (301) was different also and a few had 305 chevy engines and the shaker was different for them as well. The 70-76 was the biggest and best looking IMHO. They make a kit to make the non-functional shakers functional. I always liked the 80-81 Z28 air induction hood scoop. They all had functional flappers activated by a switch at the gas pedal. An arm at the end of the pedal pushed the switch about an inch and the flapper snaps open.
I realize this is a old post but I am in the process of doing this. So I am grateful this post is here. Was looking for measurements for the opening and you had here Thanks....
I still haven't started my shaker mod. life got in the way since my last post here...lol I have everything ready to do it, just no time... Anyone have any finished pictures?
i use to have a 81 Z28 with induction. I loved it. I have a 77 Shaker coming now and will start on mod as soon as I get it. The hood is marked but need to see the actual shaker. I think I will take a lot of pics and post them as I do this.
THE NEXT THING i WANT TO GET IS THE FUNCTIONAL CONVERSION KIT. WILL HAVE TO BUY THAT AND THEN FIGURE OUT HOW TO CUT OUT PIECE ON THE SHAKER TO INSTALL IT
Thanks, I really wanted to do a 2nd gen inspired 3rd gen Bandit, so this was my interpretation. I had the wheels painted in the same gold as the bottom stripe on this car, and they fit perfectly. I took the dash out and did the gold overlay by hand one panel at a time, and used the 77 SE german font for the decals, and the bird was a darker gold to fit with the "copper" looking color scheme. It really turned out nicely. My next project will be a white bandit, similar to this one, but white with the gold stripe on the bottom, but all of the other fabs, including the shaker hood

How about some underhood pics / build pics of the shaker?
Here are some pics of the build. I checked and I don't really have any pics of the underhood or the shaker itself. These are pretty much all I have during the creation of the shaker hood. I followed RICHRAD's ideas, and drilled holes, and used a jigsaw. I still have the template to make another one too.

Reason: more info
I'm in the process of doing this as well to my 83. I have a piece of a good for a template, a Shaker, and am likely going to fabricate a drop bad air cleaner specifically to fit my setup as I have tall valve covers and whatnot. This thread is what helped me get so far as I have this far and alot of the folks on here's comments have helped form my approach. I intend to use a filter element lid to help negate the issues of the sucking in road debris to the carb. I'll likely also modify the frame to correct the angle rather than make a spacer as I'm not a machinist by any means. Alot of mine will likely be welding and fiberglass work as was discussed by one of the others who have don't this. And I have toyed with idea of welding the hood section in as he did as well. Anyway, as I actually get started on this I'll endeavor to post pics and whatnot, but sadly, with a move on the horizon, it may be a minute lol.

Dredging up an old thread that hasn't been posted in for years.
At least your post is actually somewhat relevant to the thread instead of being totally unrelated like most of the necro posting that goes on here.
I was confused as to why it was bad that I posted in here lol. It directly related to the thread, and in my mind three years is not that long. Especially given how long this thread has been used and built upon. Not to mention how long Resto-Mods tend to construct. Thank you for the clarification.
