removing air filter on blower-result
Back from a weekend of racing where I was finally able to do some full ¼ mile runs. Nothing ground-breaking but I feel happy to finally have made it into the 11’s; best run was 11.9 and 122 mph with a 60ft time of 2.0 seconds. I have difficulties launching with my 6-speed and I probably need a lot more practice to lower the 60ft.
Anyway, my first run netted me a trap speed of 118,1 mph. This was with my old and probably quite restrictive K&N filter. Next run I replaced the filter with an air funnel (without any filter). Next run (30 minutes later) and without any other changes, the trap speed increased to 121.1 mph. I know that centrifugal blowers are sensitive to intake restrictions but I didn’t expect any noticeable difference so this was somewhat of a surprise-at least to me.

Probably added some boost too. Did you log any runs to see if boost increased?
Good results! I miss Sweden. Spent a lot of time in Kiruna.

I had a tough time with the filter on mine as well.
Small, restrictive, lot of heat from the headers.

Re: removing air filter on blower-result
Never been to Kiruna (about 1200 miles north of me...) but I´ve heard its a beautiful place, especially during summer (its North of the Arctic circle and its pitch black around the clock at wintertime).
Logged all runs - boost increased 0.9 psi without the filter.

Occational 1/4 mile blasts will probably be ok but I dont Think its a good idea to use it permanently. No intercooler, only meth injection (well actually "Eth injection" since I use ethanol/water 50/50).

Re: removing air filter on blower-result
I dont know if it was the bellmouth or the lack of filter that gave me the power increase but these two items looks like they can be combined and give a nice smooth entry with a decent filter element:

Re: removing air filter on blower-result
My air filter is close to the driver side manifold but I understand once you get some speed, hot air will be vented out (its a C4 Corvette, don't know if the same apply to a thirdgen though)
I still think shielding the blower and the air filter from the heat of the header is wortwhile- I have got some fancy insulation material I will try to apply: http://www.aerogel.com/products-and-.../pyrogel-xt-e/

Re: removing air filter on blower-result
Maybe off topic but anyway....it seems like my air filter is not the only restriction. Measured exhaust back pressure today (at the passenger side collector and before the cat) and it reached 8,5 psi at WOT/6200rpms. I will probably replace the cat(s) with a piece of straight pipe.

Re: removing air filter on blower-result
Im gonna chime in on the opposite end of this spectrum - Recently put a CIA on mine to get it away from the header heat - The car runs much better, the IAT's are much lower, and its more consistant interms of AFR and ambient temp now, But i noticed im losing about 1.5-2PSI of boost, which i assume is from the 3.5" ID tubing ive got now relocating the filter. Might try shortening it up some. I wanna do a second log tomorrow, as i got cut short tonight by a cop sitting at the light by my house

Re: removing air filter on blower-result
Again, coming the C4 World it seems difficult to come up with a good solution for the air filter. I have pasted some old stuff from the manufaturer of my blower kit that might apply to a thirdgen as well:
"Many, many years ago when we first developed the C4 L98 S/C kit we placed a temp probe inside the blower air filter where it sat above the headers. At a hot idle sitting still yes the air got hot BUT as soon as the car started moving there was very little difference between the OAT and the temp inside the air filter. AND because the centrifugal blower is so sensitive to air inlet restrictions we found a loss of power when remoting the air filter to the battery location (after relocating battery of course). The best method of a cold air inlet I have seen is the air filter on the blower with an appropriate hood opening and box beneath the filter as seen in one of the pics here."

Im inclined to say yes. My timing is very safe as boost starts to roll in - Though im not running knock sensors so im a little nervous too add more

Left cat-exit side, the substrate completly loose inside the casing

I recognize that look! My supercharged LS3 did the same thing to a set of Kooks high flow cats.

Re: removing air filter on blower-result
I gutted the CATS. I never tracked the car with the CATS in that shape (it was that way when I purchased the car). For sure though, it idled much better once I fixed the problem!

Re: removing air filter on blower-result
Will go to the track on Saturday. Its only 1/8 mile but it will probably give me a hint if I gained anything by removing the cats.

I don't have cats on my vehicle either, but 1) you shouldn't be insulting people based on their sexual orientation, and 2) with a laundry list like this you should be more concerned about fixing your car than giving advice to others:

Re: removing air filter on blower-result
This thread is discussing intake and exhaust restrictions on his hot rod. It is both inappropriate and against the rules to make insults regarding sexual orientation on this forum.
Again, I highly and politely suggest you focus your concentration on repairing the unsafe vehicle outlined in the report by a reputable shop, rather than insulting members with off topic and absurd statements.
Debating tech is perfectly fine. Your behavior in numerous threads has been unacceptable. I won't discuss this any further.
