Main cooling fan problem. + Where do all these relays go?
I have a '89 Trans Am 5.7L with dual cooling fans. My main cooling fan is not coming on at all. (The smaller secondary fan does come on when it should at 240 degrees.) What should I be checking to fix the problem? Where are all the relays & switches associated with turning the fan on? (Give EXACT location info if you can). I'm reading a lot of conflicting info about locations (I think they are in different places in pre-1989 cars). BTW my shop manual is still in storage.
Also, there are 4 relays by the power steering pump on the drivers side firewall -- the problem is all 4 are loose (see my pix). Can anyone tell me what these are for and proper location so I can remount them? (If you can post a photo that'd be great). Thanks.

Run a 12v source directly to the motor first. Then work your way back from there if the motor works.

Re: Main cooling fan problem. + Where do all these relays go?
I did remove the plug from the back of the main fan motor and I stuck my meter into the wire leading to it to see if it was getting the 12v hot signal when it was supposed to. It was not. So I think th problem is somewhere before it hits the fan motor. So....trace the path for me..where are the relays and switches located?

There are so many different configurations for the fan relays. Meaning from one car to the next they are in a different spot. But if I had to guess I'd say it's one of those oval shaped ones in your photo. I'd start there. Tracing the wires from the fan up to the relay would be your best shot. Once you figure out which relay is for the fan then you can jumper around it and see if the fan comes on. If it does then start looking at the temp sensor that sends the signal to the ECU to trigger the fan relay.

Those are, fuel pump(far left), maf power and maf burn off relays (2 on the right). The little square one for foglights maybe? (I don't have TAs, I have formulas)
1 of The fan relays are on the pass core support next to the rad and the other is on the pass inner fender between the charcoal canister and coolant over flow tank.
