I've seen a few threads about these on this section so I hope this is the right place.
So I got an 85 Trans am Monogram model for christmas, which I'm pretty sure is actually from 1984. Everything says Copyright 1984, and the Decal page says 1/85. Not to mention, the paper looks pretty old and yellowed.
It was still sealed so I was reluctant to open it and build it but I decided I would. I'm going to do a base coat/clear coat in the color I plan on painting my 1985 Trans am. I'd like to use automotive paint, but I'm not yet sure if it's gonna work. I'll figure that out later.
I guess I'm mostly just bored but I thought it was kinda cool. Besides it being hardtop and FI, it's almost identical to mine.
From what I have seen on the net, third gen models are getting pricey. You could paint it to the color you want to paint your car, and see how it looks. Good luck

That's why I was reluctant on opening it, but I think it will be better off being built and hopefully the same color as mine.
That's what I plan on doing, it even has all the decals, and the gfx mostly seperate to paint them easier.
If only I had a camaro.. Can still get a 1985 Camaro I-ROC Z model new at the hobby store for $16. Haha!
I've seen these built up and they turn out quite well with a little effort. I have 3 of these Monogram kits to build in addition to my actual Formula.
As far as base/clear paint on a plastic model, it is very doable. I haven't done it myself, but I know the key is to use a plastic-safe primer first.
Show us some pics when you get it done!

Then hopefully we'll be able to paint it the exact color we want, which is a suprise until we get the model done at least.
Here it is, exactly what my car should look like when it's done besides T-Tops, 18/19" black corvette rims and a few other small details.
Not the best pics ever, but I think that they show it alright. You'll just have to believe me when I say that the color "pops" A LOT more when you're actually looking at it.
That is automotive paint(Matrix, was $25 for half a pint), the local body shop(Also our neighbor who gave me the car) sprayed it for us. Also used his normal clear on it too.
Only prep we did was Bulldog, and it came out pretty much perfect.
I need this, I've been looking and see this will work to replicate my 87, I'll just have to cut out the t-tops.
I would get a 4th gen kit for the LS swap lol.
Model turned out sweet. Good job.
I did one a few years ago to try and match a car I used to own. There's companies out there that sell scale accessories for models - air cleaners, carbs, belt buckles, etc...
Here's the one I did. I made the t-top bag, seat belts & even the shoulder trim piece on the side of the seat. I also painted the interior the same color as mine. While the paint was wet I sprinkled flocking on it so the carpet & seats look like fabric.
Too cool man! We would have gone a little more detailed like adding T-Tops and, like you did, add texture to the interior. Although it is going to have leather seats which would have been quite hard to do haha! But I was to anxious to see the paint!
I don't understand why almost no one does the gold on the bottom on custom cars.. I mean I guess it looks sharper without it, but for me it just finishes the car.. And the bird too!
