Broken manifold bolt
Hey guys, I've got a 1985 Trans Am WS6 that I'm putting headers on, and I was wondering if you had any tips for a broken manifold bolt. Apparently I have broken one of them off halfway. I don't want to wrench on it with pliers because that would probably just strip the bolt and accomplish nothing.
The broken bolt is next to the number 5 cylinder
Additionally what is this dohickey? I have no clue, thanks.

Re: Broken manifold bolt
As far as the bolt goes, there's a few things that you can try, depending on how much thread you've got to work with. All of the options are best used with liberal amounts of heat and penetrant oil.
1) Two nut method - (35s)
2) Cut a groove in the end of the bolt\stud, and try backing it out with a standard screwdriver.
3) Using all of your might, clamp a pair of vicegrips onto the bolt and try to back it out.
4) Drill & Tap
Don't bother with easy outs if you can avoid it.

Start by spraying it with PB blaster or something similar now and a few times a day until you work on it. Next if you want to take the standard approach you can use a craftsman bolt out kit or you can weld on a nut as it looks like there is a fair amount sticking out. Use some heat as needed.
I use these bolt outs all the time to remove studs like that

Re: Broken manifold bolt
Once the head of the bolt is gone, the inside of the "socket" is tapered and as you turn it to remove, it continues to go deeper onto the stud and grips even harder. Trust me, they work fantastic!

Re: Broken manifold bolt
So I bought a set of those and let me tell you what that's the best 30 bucks I've ever spent and I'd happily do it again. Ten seconds and a breaker bar and that baby was out, big time thanks to all the people who helped me.

Re: Broken manifold bolt
This spacer came from ... somebody... as part of a package.
Those are Edelbrock TES, that I had on the car A LONG time ago.
I made more, later, out of some size of water pipe nipple. For some other kind of headers, SLP maybe. Looked pretty much the same except it was more a piece of pipe than rolled-up sheet metal. w/e. Bought it at the home improvement store (aw-aw-aw-aw-aw) and cut to length. Much too eeeeezzzzy really, I feel embarrassed telling you this, you'd have figured it out eventually, next time your eye landed on a piece of pipe. (no, that not THAT kind of a piece of pipe)
