Re: Single Sub Box
If you have the time, money and resources, you can have a custom box made. Or, if you're good with MDF and fiberglass, you can build your own. This one I had built, I left the car at the shop and drove my 89 while having the work done. My installer used as much of the design in the stickies at the top of the forum as possible and came up with a very nice box for a single 12" Memphis MOJO.

Tho only problem with your setup is the OP wanted a 12, IIRC the bottom of the well is 12" front to back and with 3/4" mdf you would only really have 10.5" internal, so it would be impossible to fit a 12, he could buld a box that sits on the shelves and goes up, or he can do the original box plans in the sticky and modify it like I did except the extra mdf wouldn't be needed

Ive Seen A Single Box That Goes In Where The Lock Up Box Goes, They Cut Out The Plastic Part And Formed An MDF Box To Take Its Place And Look Almost Flush. I Kinda Like It Cus You Can Keep Your Trunk Space

Re: Single Sub Box
That's a ppossibility but it limits you on dimensions and subwoofer choice, the point of building a custom box is to provide the optimal air space for the subwoofer you choose, and if someone wanted to port that they'd be screwed, ported applications are sometimes double and more of a sealed enclosures dimensions, also hatches and upfiring boxes go hand in hand, the soundwaves have a larger space to travel instaead of shooting across and bouncing back, up firing it hits the glass and dissipates forward
If youre not a huge bass nut you could do the side box, but personally id glass it and angle the sub forward and up at an agnle a bit

Re: Single Sub Box
If you want, I can make you a box. Just offering. Contact me with the info on the sub and I'll figure up a price for the box. Don't know how much shipping will be, though. These are things to keep in mind, but I don't mind building you one.

Sorry, didn't pay attention to who OP was. LOL I guess we ginally got the system down, so should I plan on building the box?

i like building my own, a good single 12" in a properly built enclosure sounds so good, and they are allot of fun to build.
this one took me over 6 hours to build including calculations and measurements but it payed off big time the sound and output is incredible for a single 12 with only 400 watts

Re: Single Sub Box
If anyone is interested in keeping the trunk space in their Camaro's and also a much more affordable route in regards to car subwoofer systems i recommend Bazooka Tube subwoofers........you can get passive models which require an amp like a regular sub or a amplified bazooka tube which has a built in amplifier. I have one and installation was unbelieably easy, no wires had to go to the battery just one set of wires goes to the stereo and taps into factory wires, ground the sub and 4 skrews to mount it and your done!!!! Check out how clean & simple my set up looks

Re: Single Sub Box
I prefer bass. If you want trunk spaqce look into alpines new type R slims, they're only 3 inches deep and they only need a quarter of a cubic foot, build a box to go across the shevles and you still have your trunk space.
No amp or sub running off a deck is going to be worth jack considering most decks only put out 18 watts after thermal loss, which is why we have amplifiers and connections at the battery
Check out jlaudio.com for some schooling

Here is a thread for building your own. All you would have to do is only cut one hole.

Re: Single Sub Box
Mounting a sub either on that side or where the spare tire is supposed to be has been an idea of mine for a few years. Just never took the time to actually make it happen. I'd be interested in the exact dimensions you come up with as well. For now, I have a Bazooka RS 10" down in the sump. Sounds great without being visible.

your only other real option is to build one which is a pain since we have more unusual angles than other boxes, I build cutsom boxes every week and i still hated doing mine lol problem is you have to cut the panels with an angle on certain parts, then get the other attaching panel to match, if you have a wood shop and some determination you can build one

Nice! Hey How Does Just A Single 12" Type-R Sound In Your 3rd Gen? Do You Like It Better Compared To Any Other Subs You May Have Heard In A 3rd Gen?

I'm currently running 2 10w1's from JL and they sound worlds better, the type r was a free sub so I just modified what I already had to use the sub. This setup is long gone I enjoyed the type r but it wasn't enough bass for me the 2 JL's are doing great though

Well Of Course JL's Are The Shiettt LoL I Like That Idea Of Cutting Out Another Top Board For 1 12", I'm Thinking Of Doing That As Well & Cutting Out The Board In The Middle Inside The Box That Separates The 2 12's So I Can Get More Air Space For A Single 12" To Hit, I'm Thinking Of Going With A 12" W3 & Later Maybe A W6. Does 1 12 Still Sound Good In That Box Even With It Still Being Sealed And Not Ported?

In both of these cases the two points that matter the most are the box, because you need to have a box built for what you're gonna use it for, and the amp, cheap jensen amps and Walmart buy amps are nothing compared to a true rated alpine or jl or rockford amp. Too many times I've heard people knocking a very nice sub because it sounds like crap but they're running it on a jensen 4 channel bridged down... No kidding it sounds like crap I wonder why?? When you step into good subs your other gear needs to be on point, low end amps have horrible dampening factors and fake ratings a Sony 1000 watt usually puts out 300 on a good day.... Problem with that is ubderpowering a sub means the coil isn't getting enough power so it can't properly control the excursion or throw of the sub and sooner or later it will go too far and short. On the other end of the spectrum if you run a super high amp like a rockford t1000 on a single w1 or even a w3 you will burn up the voice coil. The entire process is a touchy thing and you gotta get your stuff matched or you will blow it apart and be out xxxx amount of money
Back on point w1s are good little subs for the price, when I blow them or get bored I'm going to a w3

Re: Single Sub Box
[quote=BluFBdy;5298766]You need to be mindful of your airspace, too much and bass response is lost and the sub is likely to be damaged because the voice coil will have poor control, best thing you could do would be to get your box ready and then get your sub, check the air space requirements and compare it to your box, measure the internal volume if the box and if toire close to the right number then you're fine. Subs are touchy too much air and they sound like crap too little and theyre fighting the box to hit properly, both can be remedied but if your sub wants .3 cu ft sealed don't throw it into a 1.25 cu ft box ya known? As far as the port goes having a ported box in these cars isn't the greatest due to the shared space, there's no trunk to drown out the port noise so for me it drives me nuts sealed boxes do just fine especially when you shoehorn the bass in the back
Yeah I Get What You're Saying, Hmm Do You Think One 12" W3 Would Be Cool By Itself Using The Whole Box As Airspace Or Do You Think 2 W3's Would Be Better?

Re: Single Sub Box
I do not have the dimensions, I was measuring and building, but it's 3 feet wide and the port is 3x6.5x15, it also uses the smaller section if the trunk so there is allot of cuts, brad nails, screws, glue, it's not that hard but it takes time

This is the small enclosure I made and I included dimensions.
If you want to use a 12" then just make it taller or angle the top up so a 12" fits, assuming its the correct air space.
Boxes for thirdgens aren't hard to make, the guys complaining about them being difficult are just used to making boxes for trucks and suvs that have no restrictions.

Re: Single Sub Box
I made a shallow box to fit 2 12" subs- difference is, that only one is active. I was given 2 MTX subs, and found only one worked... so I removed the magnet assembly from the bad one; sealed the box with insulation, and installed the subs. It hits good and hard, and sounds good, sonic-ally. As the powered sub moves one way, the other responds the opposite way. Mono Sony 1000w/600wRMS amp powering.
