Fuel pump relay.... hard cold start?

I did some mods on my 85' T/A WS6 now having cold start issues. It cranks and cranks on "cold start" before actually starting. When it is "warm, starts right up. When I turn Key to "AC" position, I do not hear the fuel pump. I do hear it for a few seconds after shutting car off (I think that's what I am hearing). Could it be pump relay? Where is it? How do I test that? and or replace it? Other issues? Vacuum somewhere? Seems as if my fuel lines are losing their PRIME after sitting for a bit and I need to wait for fuel.

had similar cold start issues..was my fuel pump...pulled my relay, wouldnt start at all..put relay back in..after 3 or more attempts, would start...checked my pressure at rail..it was 20psi...regulator was ok...leaving me with fuel pump...once changed, cranks on first start..youtube how to check fuel pressure..i'll look for link..

Re: Fuel pump relay.... hard cold start?

There is definately no pump running when I turn the key "ON" but not to start. I thought I read somewhere that by cranking the engine... getting the oil pressure up actually activates another circuit that runs the pump??? I can hear the pump run for a couple seconds as I turn the car off.

Re: Fuel pump relay.... hard cold start?

I read a few earlier post on this subject... I did find the 20 AMP in line fuse near the battery, it was good. I did run a 12 volt "Jumper" from the battery to the "G" diagnostic port. The fuel pump did kick in. I did check the fuse block for the fuel pump fuse. There was no fuse in that slot, I tried to put a fuse in there, but it fell out. I pulled the block and found that there were no terminals or even wires going to that spot in the block. Assume my application must be different and not running from/fused from there? I then went to my Relay.... It's a single, 5 pin, not 3 separate like zero13 posted in the picture. Mine is a 85' TPI Pontiac T/A. Relay had silicone around it? maybegot wet prior to me owning... I ordered a new one, we will see what happens, be in later today.

Re: Fuel pump relay.... hard cold start?

Could you do me a huge favor and, take a picture of where you found the in line fuse near the battery. And, also of the relay you've replaced. I've done my pump, filter, and, still no luck. It turns over every once in a while but, will die after running randomly and, without warning. I don't think it to be a fuse because of the fact that it is intermittent but, there could be a bad connection at that fuse. I just can't seem to locate it.

Thanx in advance.

mine was easy to find, but what I learned was that depending upon what year and model car you have these can be in different places and different style relays. I will try to get some pics tomorrow. My in line fuse was between the battery and radiator, mounted on the radiator support. Look for a connection with orange wires coming out of it. Open it up, should be a 20 amp blade style fuse in it. Mine was a single relay with 5 wires coming out of it. On the firewall, driver's side corner. Small black box between fender and brake assembly.

Re: Fuel pump relay.... hard cold start?

thank you for the speedy reply.

I have three black boxes right in the same place on the drivers firewall. I'm pretty sure I'm looking at the right one. I think one is the fuel pump relay, one is the map and, the other is the second fan relay. I'll know once I see the replacement. Still having a hard time finding the fuse though. I've got a fan relay on the passenger side radiator support. I'll dig a little more once the sun comes back up.

do a forum search for fuel pump relay. I found a couple very informative posts with pictures of the relays and location of the fuses. Yours will be different than mine.

Where did you order the relay from. I have the same excact issue and I notice that the ground wire had been cut and a half butted attempt made to reconnect it. I fixed that and I can here my pump running but it seems like sometimes it runs for 3 or so seconds and others about 1 second. I just want to replace the relay also.

You can get the relays from any auto parts store, order on line rock auto, or even EBAY. There should be a number on the relay. Plug that into Internet and order, or take relay to store and parts guy can get for you. I had mine same day from part store. Ordered in AM, picked up after lunch.
