Re: SIDEPIPES

Your car is your car...Ill never say something looks stupid. I might think it, but like I said. Its yours...

However here is my opinion on sidepipes. I think they only look good tucked, and moulded into the car. Unless you are driving a cobra or old vette...

Here is a 4th gen bird that someone did recently. It took extra work, yes. But looks phenominal IMO. I believe those are Porsche 996 Turbo tips. I also think it might be easier on our thirdgens with GFX... there seems to be more there on a thirdgen. So making that cut out would probably be easier, and less mods to the chassis may be possible.

Sometimes you gotta just step it up and take that extra little bit and it will pay off.

But if the pipes hanging along the side is your thing...go for it.

That 4th gen does look good, EXCEPT that the whole rear bumper on those cars are molded around the exhaust tips which are not there. However, that is more of a reason to try it on a 3rd gen!

Looks really good IMO also but that'd never work with my SFC's....

Re: SIDEPIPES

I wanted that kind of look so I took the way cheaper route by taking the stock exhaust that was already hacked off at the rear axle, cut the pipe where it transitions 45 degrees heading towards the driveshaft, welded in a thrush magnum glasspack, reused the stock 45 degree bend, ran about 6" of straight pipe then used another 45 degree bend from advance, and had enough straight tubing leftover to run it to the rear, until I got bigger tires for the rear, and had to notch the pipe with an angle grinder, hammer it straight, weld it back together but it dumps out in front of the passenger rear tire and sounds mean as ****, not to mention it blows the smoke out when I roast the tire ( yes one wheel wonder but not for long )

Yeah. I think the owner of that particular car is going to add pieces to that to give a road car look. LIke the back of some ferraris and road racers. With the air diverters... Know what i mean?

Either way, Im willing to bet you could fill that area, or modify it to look better. make a false panel or fiberglass it or something.

SFCs might be an issue, but anythings possible. It would make it more difficult. There are some talented peopel out there, Im sure someone could pull it off.

my exhuast hits almost every speed bump i go over and all you can see under my car from the side is big rusty pipes. that 4th gen looks sweet:nod:

rat rods, street rods, 427 cobra's and classic vettes with side pipes = cool.
Camaro/firebirds with side pipes = not cool
I do agree done properly like the 4th above can be cool.

Re: SIDEPIPES

i dont liek side pipes, however it is cool to dump the exhaust right in front of the rear tire on a side exit, thats how i had my old one set up, till my buddy decided to drive over a speed bump and destroy it, so i just put a whole magnaflow catback on

i wish i had a good clip of my car with that set up, i cut the cat, stuck on straight pipe, put a force pro series muffler that i got for $30 from summit on (flow 40 knock-off) and put it right out the side, sounded awesome, everyone but my neighbors loved it, and it set off car alarms

best clip i got

CHECK THESE SIDEPIPES OUT!!! CUSTOM 4" STAINLESS PIPES COME OFF MODIFIED HOOKER LONG TUBES. REBUILT GROUND EFFECTS FROM STEEL. 13 PCS OF SHEET METAL TO MAKE EACH, TIG WELDED W/SILICONE BRONZE ROD & PAINTED TO MATCH. NOT A JOB FOR THE FAINT OF HEART!!!! MUST USE SOLID FRONT MOTOR MOUNTS OR YOUR CAR WILL DESTROY YOUR HEADERS AND /OR PIPES!! PURCHASED BENDS FROM BURNS STAINLESS. MADE THEM A 4 INTO ONE FOR LOOKS BUT ALL PIPES ARE FUNCTIONAL. FASTENED PIPES TO CUSTOM WELD IN SUB FRAME CONNECTORS I BUILT. ANY ONE WHO SAYS SIDE PIPES CAN'T LOOK GOOD ON 3 GENS NEVER SAW MINE. I HAVE NEVER HAD ANYTHING BUT MAJOR COMPLIMENTS!!!

Nice. I like those.
So, the GFX are steel?
I'd expect fiberglas to melt . . .

Any sound clips of the car?

Re: SIDEPIPES

YEA, THE EFFECTS ARE STEEL. I CUT UP NONBLUED SHEET METAL AND TIG WELDED ALL THE PIECES TOGETHER, PREPED AND PAINTED TO MATCH. SORRY, NO SOUND CLIPS BUT VERY LOUD. MADE INSERTS FOR THEM AND PACKED WITH STAINLESS STEEL WOOL. MADE INSERTS FROM BURNS STAINLESS CONNICAL PIECES TO FORM A LONG HOUR GLASS INSERT, PERFORATED WITH A PLASMA ARC, PACKED WITH THE WOOL AND FORCED THEM INSIDE. CAR IS PRETTY LOUD BUT SOUND IS DIRECTED AWAY FROM CAR SO NOT BAD INSIDE. WORST PART IS SOLID MOTOR MOUNTS SO YOU FEEL EVERY BIT OF THE MOTOR EVEN THOUGH IT'S BALANCED. DEFINITELY NOT STREET LEGAL WHEN THE NEW EMISSION INSPECTION LAWS GO TO 50 STATES AS SOON AS THIS YEAR, HOWEVER IF YOUR IN THE CAR BUSINESS THERE WILL BE A WAY AROUND IT. MOST CARS WILL HAVE TO BE CHANGED BACK TO MEET EMISSIONS THOUGH AND THIS IS A VERY PRICEY MODIFICATION EVEN THOUGH I DID ALL BUT THE PAINT JOB MYSELF. THANKS FOR THE COMPLIMENT.....TOPRADMAN dba.,BEST RADIATOR REPAIR, WAREHOUSE & CUSTOM MUFFLER CENTER, HOME OF THE "BADASS" SERIES CUSTOM ALUMINUM RADIATOR.

Re: SIDEPIPES

here is a 2nd gen camaro with side pipes.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=clinIyUHCV0&feature=related
but i think for a 3rd gen car you gotta have your car look like it should have side pipes.
good rims, paint, stylsh hood. or have a blower sticking out of it.
and a supier strong engine and good exhaust sound and everything then maybe sidepipes.
i was thinking of putting m on my car. but i wouldnt be able to get off my driveway because i got a dip at the end and it would just scape the bottom like mad.
i was thinking of having some nice chrome puts that is cut on an angle and have the tip exiting the rear wheels. i was going to do that. but i didnt have mooney and i would loose alot of clearence from my car.
im just decided im going to have the exhaust exit the just before the rear axle. it should be alot cheaper when i take it to the exhaust shop. dont have to try to bend it over the rear axle and everyting.
if its going to cost memore then ill do it myself.

instead of huge stingray-esqe sidepipes, how about a side exit exhaust such as mine? i think it looks alot cleaner on a thirdgen. heres some pics:

Wow... that looks fantastic. But you went through a lot of work to make those look good on the car. Most people are just going to dump them under the gfx and call it a day.

And LOL at your "Fugly" hood. Your reaction was hilarious, not in a bad way. But I HATE those kinds of giant scoop hoods, but damn it works on your car. That's an amazing ride if you ask me. You made a bunch of things work together in a very interesting way and it works real well. I bet it goes even faster than it looks!

I personally like my dumps right near the diff because you cant see the pipes underneath unless you're pretty far away. You guys with the side exits, it looks cool but it's painfully obvious how little ground clearance there is.

My ground clearance aint great, but at least that aint obvious from teh side. ;)

Just an opinion, I dont mean to put down anyone's hard work, but true side pipes are just very difficult ot pull off on these cars and I think side exits look good, but if I were to do them I'd go with some boom tube tips like Skulte's car:

Re: SIDEPIPES

A 3rd gen Trans Am (imo) looks more exotic than say a classic American muscle car. I had once seen a clean exotic looking white 3rd gen TA on the street from the front. Driving by it, it had large chrome sidepipes which made me do a double take. Ya, that just killed it for me. Very "hickish" if you ask me. But ya, to each his own.

Re: SIDEPIPES

Boom tubes like Andris' car do look sweet but he and I live in CT where those are CERTAINLY not street legal or emissions passable. His car now from what I understand though is off-road only. I still have to find a way to pass this spring....I'll have to run a fast change 3" cat in my mufflex 4" system, run a lean tune and with a 1/4 tank of 93 dump a half gallon of denatured alchol....then maybe it'll pass.
I really do like that 4th gen look. Sides pipes for me would have to be 100% hidden except where the tips come out but alas...again my SFC's don't allow.

HEY INFERNALVORTEX, THANKS FOR THE COMPLIMENT. FIRST TRIP TO THE STRIP YEAR BEFORE LAST ONLY WENT 11.60 WITH STREET TIRE. I WAS SMOKIN OFF THE LINE AND WHEN SHIFTED, CK ENG LIGHT CAME ON (O2'S) AND REVLIMITED OUT AT 6200 SEVERAL HUNDRED FEET FROM THE FINISH, NOT TO MENTION BLOWER BELT SLIP AND HEADERS COMING LOOSE DURING THIS THIRD PASS. (GUESS THAT'S WHY THEY CALL IT "TEST & TUNE". TRANS ISN'T VALVED FOR WOT O/D SHIFT INTO 4TH AND THAT'S PROBABLY A GOOD THING. CAR HAS NO PROBLEM REVING OUT TO THAT. MY MATH SAYS WITH THE NEW TALLER TIRE, AT 6200 RPM THIS CAR SHOULD TOP SPEED AT 205MPH!! PROBABLY WILL NEVER ATTEMPT THIS WITHOUT BEAD LOCK RIMS THOUGH. WITH DRAG SLICKS AND EVERYTHING RIGHT, SHOULD BE IN THE LOW 10'S WITH THIS CAR THIS YEAR. I'LL POST THE RESULTING TIME SLIPS WHEN THE TRACK OPENS FOR TEST AND TUNE IN MARCH I THINK. THANKS AGAIN, TOPRADMAN

the camaro and the firebird ended their status as muslce cars when they went to a uni-body frame. they are famous for twisting under torque, off topic but it had to be said. more on topic, sidepipes are fo a true muscle car. on a stingray, love them, on a thirdgen, ewwww. just my opinion of course but still...

I guess they were NEVER muscle cars then, since EVERY year, 1967 and up, have been unibody cars.

Re: SIDEPIPES

I can live with the hidden side pipes. i like the boom ones. would like a one molded into the last section of the GFX. especially on my 91. Only thing is what about the SCF!!!!! That is a very important detail to me. can you mold a side pipe into the GFX on a camaro? If so then i'm sold. I thought i hated sidepipes but the hidden ones i like.

I like the side exits better too. I plan on doing something similar to the boomtubes but with a 4th gen Z28 tip which is about the same shape as the tip of the boomtube tip.

its your car man do what you want!!! (IMO) those rear exits in front of the tire you guys have look like horrid not to mention the bottoming out feature that come with them to.and as for the muscle car confusion any 2door car that came factory with a v-8 was considered a muscle car.probley not muscle cars like old vette's or a charger but they were still considered muscle cars.unless they were classed other words.

well to tell you guys the truth i like them all , the cat back is nice in its own way but the side pipes are nice in theirs , im not very fond of the side exit but its nice in its own to , but like someone else said you have to make it look good , an just for the record a muscle car is what you make it to be , what you call a turbo charged v6 gn or even a firebird or camaro, i call it a muscle car it may not have that distinct v8 sound but i betcha it smokes the tires till they blow , right ?,, well i wish everbody the best in wich ever route they go im sure itll be nice no matter what

So if 3rd gens have such bad ground clearance with side pipes or side exit, how do the mustangs (Rousch, Eleanor) get away with it? There has to be some of those guys running SFC's too.

I'm definitely no expert when it comes to this, but I can only make general assumptions.

Possibilities:

1. Thirdgens are lower to the ground than those cars.

or, more likely:

2. Thirdgens are monococque/unibody cars. There are no frame rails. With a lot of those other cars, the body sits on top of a frame. I bet they tuck the exhaust up into the frame, meaning it doesnt affect ground clearance at all.

3rd gens do sit lower, but Mustangs are unibody cars too. As are 90% of the muscle cars. Only full-size cars were framed cars. ie: Chevelles, El Caminos....

Yeah I always thought that the 1st gen camaros were frame cars. However, I was watching powerblock tv the other day, and they built a brand new 1st gen from a "crate camaro" unibody from year one.
