Very impressive! Even more impressive is the fact that he's still using the TPI.

That video was with his old setup using a Vortech SC.

Guido and others know more about his setup. or if you do a search you should find more info.

Umm...

I knew which video it was as soon as I hit play...

For those of you that "pay attention", didnt you notice the Vortech blower shot after the burnout? Didnt look like a turbo, did it?

Waste of bandwidth (j/k).

For a moment there, I was starting to think the car was back in the nines, unless it is...

Now... where is the current video???

Yes that vid is old while he still had the vortech. Guess I should have stated that in the 1st post. I havent seen any new vids with the turbo.

I've seen him race alot up my way at new england dragway, pretty impressive when he had the vortech on it, and the car is perfect in and out, awesome to see it run in person, the photo's and vid's do the car no justice. I talked to him alot last summer about the turbo setup, nice guy...but he only ran a few times...low tens says he's working the bugs out of it...oh unsure if anyone knows this but this motor is a 305 with forged rotating assembly with alot of arizona speed and marine tuned port stuff on it and it was a 305 when it ran 9's with the vortech so it'll be interesting to see what he does with the turbo this summer, definately a monster in disguise!

I met and talked to Preston this summer at englishtown. He was running street tires and 16psi of boost and ran 11.02 @ 124 in bracket racing.

I didnt get a chance to hang out very much because I was chasing gremlins with my own car. I wish I would have spent more time chatting with him but it was nice to meet him.

I dont know much else about his car so I cannot offer much.

yeah 305 hehehe pretty sick eh?....and as you see him driving his 11 second PLUS car back to Mass. from the dragway in NH the license plate will make ya grin "TPI305" hehe....I have tons of video of this guy racing w/the vortech, watched it last nite after I read this...was'nt that fast tho'...just a few low 10 sec. passes before he toasted a head gasket...and the funny thing..full exhaust, real smooth and quiet...the car shocked the hell outta me the first time I saw it!

Compared to what it did with the vortech and compared to what it could do w/the turbo, christ he could easily get into low 9's high 8's so yeah 10 sec. passes w/that car is kinda slow.

I honestly believe 8's are possible on a turbo iroc pushing high boost if you can get traction ..... if you can get traction ....

lol....some of you need to do a little more research

YES

that car *could* go 8s but it is going to require a MUCH bigger turbo and about 25-26psi and much lower weight

I've heard of a coulple T-76 stangs going 8.80s

BUT

they weighed like 2800lbs WITH driver and were big inch motors

Well ... thats basically what my plan is. I gonna use a 98-99 LS1 rebuilt with foarged components to 8.5:1 compression and a single T76 turbo. I plan to run a max of 22 psi of boost for short ammounts of time. As far as getting the weight down, the main weight reduction will come from the K1 Evo full body fiberglass replacement kit (brings car down to 2800 pounds ... love or hate the look it makes the car light), the LS1 swap (all aluminum) not sure how much lighter than an iron block but I think like 150 pounds lighter, and tubular a-arms will also help make the car lighter. I could be possible get the weight down to 2800 pounds with driver. If LS1 Motorsports can get a 3800 pound camaro to run high 9's @ 135 with 701 rwhp (@ 16 psi i've heard) ... 8's are possible if you can get traction.

you might want to give rob raymer a call because he has

THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS

into keeping the head gaskets on that car

they figured that part out, now the problem is that every two runs the aluminum heads WARP

that can become pricey

i'd give him a call on that if you wanted to do it with an LS1

it would actually be cheaper to use:

-dart block
-15* or 18* heads
-same turbo

^ is a proven combo and many can help with your problems

just my .02

Axle/Gears: stock... whatever that means :)
22 psi on an LS1? You must have magic head bolts or magic head gaskets!

No one has kept the heads on that thing at those boost levels...

Also... Doesnt Preston Smith have 1.5 inch primaries and a 2 1/4 inch crossover? Also, isnt he running a 2.5 inch downpipe? I could be wrong about the sizes but I know Im close. Isnt that gonna choke the engine? I can imagine what the Turbine Inlet Pressures look like...

I dont know what size turbo or what size pipes he uses. big isnt always best on pipes with a turbo. you want some restriction to keep velocity there. I went with a 3" crossover pipe and I think it may be too big but I run a lot of cubes so we will see how it does.

Im going to lock this because there is a lot of specualtion and bad info being thrown around and any tech info was exhausted long ago.
