Willie, StocRoc, zz4z28 - help with 383 SR ATI buildup
It seems like you guys and others have done or are doing what I am planning to do to my '87 IROCZ L98.
I have read several posts here today which brings up some questions about my particular setup. Currently I have a 350 fitted with a SuperRam and I burn my own chips, please check my signature for my complete setup.
I plan on rebiulding the current factory 350 engine into a 383 and install an ATI supercharger. I will get the block machined for 4 bolt main caps and relieved for a 383. Here are a few questions:
1) Will the ATI supercharger work with my SuperRam?
2) I have an '87, do I have to convert to serpentine belt setup? (StocRoc issue)
3) Do I maintain the MAF or convert to speed density system?
4) What size fuel injectors should I use?
5) It appears that the intercooler sits on top of the plenum, it this correct? Or can it be located someplace else?
6) What is the difference between D1SC and P1SC?
7) What is the cost of an ATI and where can I purchase it?
8) My block is a single piece rear main seal. Does Speedomotive make a 383 stroker kit for my block?
I'd like to get this done right the first time. Your help will be greatly appreciated!

the cheaper 383 (3.75") stroke crank sold by speed-o-motive as well as many other companies is an 80-60-06 cast steel crank. some of the manufacturers are scat, elgin, maybe cat, and a few others. they are identified usually by the cast steel designation or the pricing usually around $239-$279. these cranks are not bad at all, and many have had pretty good luck even on blower cars. but we are seeing a tendancy to break the snout off the crank with the blown cars from the tension and side loading of the blower drive belt. cast cranks occasionally do this also but we are seeing it more on the "cast steel" cranks more often. my suggestion is to get a forged steel crank, even if you decide to build just a 355 you can get a factory forged 1 pc rear seal LT4 crank or a forged steel 1 pc rear main seal 383 crank from speed o motive or many other vendors.

Doc,
I think i might be able to shed alittle light onto some of your questions.
<b> </b>
Yes, though you may have to do alittle clearancing for the intake elbow, due to the slight difference in the TB position from the stock TPI.
<b> </b>
Yes, you will need to convert to the serpentine set-up, your best bet would be to go to your local salvage yard and find a 88-92 and grab everything you need. most of the parts are still available thru your local GM dealer also.
<b> </b>
You can retain your MAF, but you will max out the sensor at 255 grams/sec when boost levels come up. I haven't heard of any problems with blowing pressure into the MAF either.
<b> </b>
Stick with your 24#'s this is what ATI recommends. just make sure that your oxygen sensor voltages are in the 850mv to 950mv range.
<b> </b>
No, that is wrong, what you see on Willie's ride is a custom made air filter box that draws fresh air from the cowl of the car, the ATI kit comes with a K&N cone flilter that sits directly over the driver side manifold. not very efficient. The intercooler is mounted under the nose of the car. Heres a pic for ya!
<b> </b>
The difference is the amount of CFM's each unit produces.
<b> </b>
The cost is approx. 3 - 4K, depending on which kit you decide to buy, and what upgrades you wish to have. the kits can be purchased at many different ATI dealers. ATI's website has a list of most of dealers.
<b> </b>
B4Ctom1 already took care of this question.
hope this helps ya

b4ctom & maniacc,
Thanks for your posts. After I made my post and then studied Willie's ride better, I realized that the "thing" on top of his plenum was the air filter.
I have a very nice production piece which gives me a great amount of ram air effect. It draws air in where the fog lamps use to be and up to the bottom side of the air filter. I diffinately want to use this setup with the Procharger. I may have to do some custom plumbing.
Happy New Year to everybody!

Yes, the ATI will fit a Super ram, I know this because the guy I bought mine from was running a Superam, and he didn't say anything about problems with fit.
You will have to convert to serpentine, but trust me you will love it, the cool part is you alreadyhave the 4 pin alternator so you don't have to go through the crap I did. you might need to get a reverse flow water pump. if your going to bypass the A.C. or air pump go to a chevy dealer and get what they call idler pulleys, it's just a bracket with a pulley made to fit ina stock location.
I'm not sure about the MAF because I have speed density.
I'm running 30# injectors, when I build a stroker i'm going to use bigger i'm not sure what size though.
The intercooler is on the bottom like you can see in the picture.
I think the difference in the 2 blowers is the D1SC is a little bigger, but I'm not sure, I'll look and find out.
Goldenwest Performance was going to sell me a kit for $4260, but look around you can find allot of good prices.
when you do build your motor let me know, I have the 3.40 pulley for a D1SC it makes about 12# on a 383 stroker.
Good Luck

Doc,
Good luck, i have sat and stared at my engine compartment and i can not physically find the room to duct the air from the front of the car to the inlet of the blower, so i have decided to go the same route as Willie, making a custom airbox out of carbon fiber (better insulator than metal) and sealed to a Glasstek 2" cowl hood. This is one of my many winter projects.

Thanks again for the replies.
I think that I should do this one step at a time.
First, install a stroker kit, convert to serpintine belt, and get the car running really good.
Then, install a ATI supercharger, possibly switch to air density as an intermediate step.
I want to wish everybody on this board a very happy new year.
Over the last several years, this board has been very helpful to me.

Doc,
I didn't find it necessary to reply earlier since everyone else seemed to have answered all the questions.
Like you said above, I think it's a good idea to take your plan of action. That's exactly what I did. First, I converted to serpentine, then added the blower about six months later. It then took another nine months or so to come up with the correct belt/pulley combination.
