Project build "wicked Z"
Just wanted to share my new turbo build.
Car is a super clean 91Z hardtop zero rust
Goals are 1500HP
8s at 160+
pro-touring theme
SBC 400 with twin garret gt42s,t400 3.00 gear fab 9"
10 pt super tight CM cage
Mini tub 18x13 18x10
The drivetrain is coming out of my proven pro-touring 89 iroc that went 9.7 at 150 on 17x11 DRs. I have all parts except my intercooler l/a and wheels and a few minor items.
So far I have my custom through the floor connectors (I built 2" sqaure) installed and front radiator mods done to move the radiator up 18 inches and still retain the factory hood latch (no pins). I have a few pictures and will get more soon. Full disclosure here the cage came from Jameschassis shop, cool guy and the cage and connectors are the same setup as andrew91 project blue firebird.
Forgive my welding skills I'm working on that and my buddy will tig the cage, I will fit it in the car.

Vid from my 89 iroc-z

Engine is coming from the 89 with a set of new brodic 11x heads spreat ports and some beefier rods and crank just to be safe. Old motor worked great!
Still have to get my fab 9" under the car and mount the cross bar for the TA. I also will remove the last 6 inches the the front subframe to allow for my dual 3.5 inch alloy exhaust that will run in the tunnel area with better than factory clearance.
Good picture of my old setup on post 1135 http://www.yellowbullet.com/forum/sh...=51574&page=76
UMI will be helping me with my suspenion parts

Re: Project build "wicked Z"
Here you can see how I removed the front rad suport upper and lower. The front clip just fits with the factory bumper in place. I will make a cover that sits on top of the hood latch area. My L/A intercooler will sit just on top of were the lower rad sport used to be.

Re: Project build "wicked Z"
I hope to see this car some day! Nice to see another fast turbo thirdgen.
I hope my new setup gets into the 8's as well but I dont have a trans brake or rear end to really take advantage of it. My heads are large tho, not a spreadport but one of the largest 23 deg heads using standard style rockers available. Theres a guy with a Andy Jensen built 400 motor with Nelson Racing turbo setup at pittsburgh raceway thats running 8.5's at 160+... believe he is using a spread port head...brodix casting. It may be 11x or similar heads. Been worked over I'm sure but his car flys with 20-23 psi I believe.

Update
CM Cage 90% done. I cut and notched cage and my pals at UMI did the tig work and did a great job! Tomrorrow should be complete then back to my garage for the min tubs and finish the chassis before paint.

Re: Project build "wicked Z"
update and little change of plans. Going LSX with sqaure port mast heads. Got my holley intake today and have a custom chiesled 2000hp L/A cooler on its way. The pictures have my old sbc headers just to give it scale. Planning on running the SW up and forward headers to the gt42s. Hoping my 3" cowl will clear we will see

Re: Project build "wicked Z"
headers and Chielsed cooler showed up and engine plate. My u bends will get here monday so can start working on the plumbing. I also need to swap over my racecraft k member and umi a-arms.
Took a few pictures and just have everything laying in the engine bay deciding how to locate everything. Will have dual 3.5 exhaust with actual ground clearence to the back of the car.

Re: Project build "wicked Z"
This is a question for andrew91. I think you lowered your motor in your build. Not sure if I drop the motor say 1.5 inches and the tranny .5 inches if that will create problems down the road with my pinion angle etc. I dont have to lower it but if I do I can run a 2.5 cowl hood instead of the 4 inch hood. By the way your car was inspiring me to get this thing put together

I lowered the engine and moved it rearward too... now how much? I don't know exactly, as the dimensions of the sbc to sbf are a bit different, especially height.
I had issues with the oil pan and transmission pan being too close to the ground... so I had to go dry sump and buy a shallow fabricated transmission pan.
What you CAN do, is measure the angle from the transmission output shaft to the driveshaft yoke. take a string, run it from your transmission output shaft to the rearend yoke with the rear suspension loaded to put it at 'ride height' or close... the measure the difference between the string angle and the output shaft angle, and you have your driveshaft ujoint angles.... try to keep it within +/- 2 degrees or so.

Wow. I love it. Definitely like to see how the intercooler placement works as I'm putting two. S480s on my 468 and have been wondering where to put my 2000hp aw cooler and like the thought you put into that.

Re: Project build "wicked Z"
Got a little more work done. I need to pick up my pwr steering pump and belt drive from waterman and mount them so I can finish my 3.5" downpies and attach wastegates to them. Cold side is done just need to weld a flange on my 4" pipe for the intake/BOV.
You can see in this photo just how the kit looks and my IC placement etc.

Every time somebody says over 700hp build, I strap my seatbelt, grab the popcorn and open a beer. (subd)

Re: Project build "wicked Z"
I removed the entire radiator suport housing and then cut the top piece rad suport and welded in the 1" sqaure steel piece and attached the factory hood latch to it to retain my stock hood latch setup. It was very easy and created a ton of room up front

Re: Project build "wicked Z"
Little update
got my turn one pwr steering mounted
Cut the last 12 inches of the frame rails off and made a new crossmember for my tranny. I also have my 3.5 exhaust run down to the tranny area were I will finish with my 3.5 oval out the back of the car for max ground clearence.
I have both gates completed and just need to weld my bov on and make a few IC suport brackets and the kit will be done.
I also mounted my belt drive for the cable drive fuel pump
