Biggest shot to run on a 305?

I'm new to the site....bought my 91RS camaro a week ago an haven't really done much. I'd like to know how big of a shot to run on a basically stock 305..I plan on putting an aluminum intake on with a edlebrock carb, cut cats off, and put headers on. On my other car ( 78 malibu 350 with aluminum heads an tunnel ram)I was running a 225 big shot on a stock bottom end and over 250,000 miles on it with no rebuild with countless amounts of bottles run threw it. So I'd like to know how big of shot someone has run on a 305 with an intake, carb, and headers ,no cat
Thanks

You should be able to get close to what you can get away with a 350, of course a lot of that depends on tuning and setup. There are monkeys out there that will blow one up without any N2O, and then there are others that will through 225hp of spray at them for a decade and not hurt it.

I'm a big fan of progressive controllers for hits over 150hp, it keeps you from breaking things unnecessary and gives you some chance at hooking.

Re: Biggest shot to run on a 305?

I ran 50+ bottles through a setup like you describe. A lot of 100hp but most with a 150 shot. It was a 305tpi originally but I did a Holly 600, performer intake, SLP headers, short 3" exhaust, 3.73 gears. It ran 13.1X with a 100 shot on Nitto drags spinning and eventually 12.80@107-108 with et streets. The gain going from 100-150hp was extremely minor so I don't reccomend it. I would gain like 19 mpg on a 100 shot but only 21 with the 150 shot.. its possible the engine couldn't burn it very efficiently. Run a colder pkug and 91+ octane gas. I think I ran 30 degrees timing. I put the motor in a truck after it ran 12'w since that was my goal. It also dyno'd 300hp/400tq on a mustang dyno. Peaks both at 4000rpm. Haha

Re: Biggest shot to run on a 305?

the faster you go, the more HP you have to add to go the same amount faster for example (just working perfect numbers), in a 3600# car, it will take 210 hp to run the 1/4 in 15, 259 to go 14, 324 to go 13, 412 to go 12, 535 to go 11, that's a change of 49, 65, 88 and 123hp all to go 1 second faster

Re: Biggest shot to run on a 305?

We had some guys locally run a 305 with a nitrous kit and wanted to see how much it would take before it quit. They started at 100 and slowly worked up to a 225 shot. They found that after 175 shot the car was running slower at the track. The motor just couldn't move anymore air.

Re: Biggest shot to run on a 305?

id suggest stick with a 175 shot and pull some timing out of it you should get really good results i pushed a stock neon motor to a 150 shot and ran low 11's lol so i am sure that 305 will hold just fine

Re: Biggest shot to run on a 305?

what, you people are serious too. keep it below 75 if you want to keep it on the road

it will not handle the higher cylinder pressures and the rings will fail first, then edges of the piston will round off... quickly, thats on a fresh specimin.

Re: Biggest shot to run on a 305?

as long as he pulls timing out of it i dont see a reason why it would melt i mean a 100 shot is deff gonna pick you up atleast a second and a half how fast do you wanna go?

Re: Biggest shot to run on a 305?

It is somewhat self regulating, eventually you get to the point that the exhaust just can't move any more air, on a carburated engine you'll actually see a fog of the stuff over the carburator at that point, but you should be able to get it to take more by putting a better exhaust on it, more exhaust timing...

You're not going to "melt" anything with a good tune and under 200hp, but like I've said before, there are people that can blow a completely stock setup up, so don't blame me if you're a retarded chimp and you blow it up...

Re: Biggest shot to run on a 305?

Whatever... I've owned 4 f-bodies now, 2 350 powered, 2 305, and I've run >200hp worth of N2O in all of them at one point or another and never broken an engine. Melted clutches, toasted auto trannies, blown up gears... but never any engine parts.

Re: Biggest shot to run on a 305?

At one point back in the early 90's N.O.S used to offer a TPI dircet port wet kit that came with new TPI runners and was adjustable from 50 to 200hp. My buddy in high school back then had a 89 with a 305 and one of these direct port kits on a stock long block and we found that the 175 shot worked the best. It went from a 14 second slug down to mid 11's car.
