Re: 87 Iroc LT1 Single Turbo Build
Well i didnt make it to the track...instead the dyno!
I have a **** tune right now..well it runs strong as hell but it is running 11.0:1AFR or richer.
8psi
91 octane
26* timing
583RWHP@6250rpm
490RWTQ@6240rpm
I told the guy to try to rev it to 6500rpm but the first run he made I dont think he relized what the car would do bc he let off at 6100 and made 547 and was like WTF that comes on FAST lol his face was awesome!
So once I get it tuned and on race gas I am thinking I will be around the 650-675RWHP range.....
Also side note I smashed a Blown 347 notch mustang on 8psi also....we made 3 pulls 2 digs, and i had ZERO traction and then he was like wanna try to roll and im like hahah sure....bus lengths happened lol
VIDEO TO COME SOON!

Re: 87 Iroc LT1 Single Turbo Build
Yeah....Mustangs are everywhere...like some virus you can't get rid of. You don't see very many third gen Camaros around anymore....of course, you don't see too many notchback Stangs around, either, not nice ones, anyway.I'm glad you destroyed the Stang. I'd like to see you race a built Terminator Cobra or some other built Stang. Some of those Cobras are nasty, as you know. It could be a good race. I like seeing a third gen Camaro walk on a newer Stang. I have seen some SICK Cobras, though. I had one humiliate me when I had my built Dodge SRT-4 (420 hp to the fronts). I had traction issues....to say the least, even in third gear. I got tired of front wheel drive B.S., and I got an IROC....then I sold it cuz I needed the money Can't wait to see a video of your car again.

Re: 87 Iroc LT1 Single Turbo Build
update...i bought my first house.....fixed the hotside on the car, fired it up and the headgaskets are ****ed! Shot a bunch of coolant outta the merge. I dunno why, last time I drove the car (month and a half) it was perfect, didnt blow smoke, oil was fine etc.
So the car is done for the year, once i move into my house I will tear the motor down and check it all over.

Re: 87 Iroc LT1 Single Turbo Build
thanks man!!
Well cylinder 8 pumped out a ton of coolant.
Pressure tested every cylinder and it was 210 across every one!
Now the back 4 rockers on both sides started to rust so I need to take them off and wheel them, Im gonna pull the heads next week and see if its the head or gasket.
So kinda good news!!!

When you switch to the 88mm what type of power do you think you will be getting out the car at the wheels? Nice build to by the way.

Re: 87 Iroc LT1 Single Turbo Build
Anyways it ended up being a cracked head! When the car overheated earlier in the year it must cracked it.
NO COOLANT GOT IN THE MOTOR!!!!
It cracked on the intake side and the intake valve was closed so it just filled the port up
So im ordering some patriot heads sometime. and dropping the compression to 8.75:1

Re: 87 Iroc LT1 Single Turbo Build
I went a completely different route with my LT1. I have a 1993 M6 car that I converted to a 727 ecm. Fabbed up a crank trigger wheel from a CAD drawing of a northstar CTW, and used the northstar coil packs. good bye opti, hello wasted spark. My buddy is going to help me with the code59 stuff. Right now its running on $8D. The car will eventually be a turbo car. I have basically $100 in hardware, plus the prominator (which I am borrowing right now). Might be a MUCH cheaper alternative to megasquirt, plus you will have better driveability.

Re: 87 Iroc LT1 Single Turbo Build
Just want to say that this build is awesome! Smoking stangs is always fun. So badass that you did the fab work yourself, makes me REALLY want to learn how to weld. I also want to compliment you on doing some brake upgrades. I see quite a few cars that people do serious mods to making it go fast and none to making it slow down.
Sick build!

Re: 87 Iroc LT1 Single Turbo Build
replied to the diy thread for you. but yep, running good. dial back timing light with a wasted spark setup = bad haha to the OP, I'd say checking into the northstar coil pack and 727 ecm swap is worth the time. and since your running an lt1, even if you don't want to fab up the wheel and sensors mount yourself, the part numbers are up to just order the wheel and sensor bracket from the boat world. even at a few 100$ I think it would turn out cheaper and better than MS. or atleast more DIY lol. I like what I've seen from $59 so far for boost, but I've also seen a thread about a 2 bar $8D might be released soon too. so options are good.

My heads sold!
and whats this.... Ported AFR 195s on the way??? whaaaaa
Compression should now be in the 8.5-9.0 range depending on IF i mill the heads or how much I mill them
Heads flow 300/209 @ .600 lift
Got them for a steal!

Re: 87 Iroc LT1 Single Turbo Build
Well some more parts in hahaha.
As you see my Ported AFR's are in. They are dissasembled so I can hot tank them and mill them to ensure they are 100% true.
AFR 195's
2.055/1.600 valves
Ported.
FLOW INT EXH
.100 71.7 52.8
.200 143.4 105.5
.300 208.6 147.2
.400 247.3 185.5
.500 276.3 203.4
.600 293.7 208.5
.650 299.1 211.3
Ordered some 16awg 1 5/8 bends with the collectors to build some tubular headers ...it is a weld up kit, but I bought it for the 90's basically. So it wont go together as the kit is suppose to. It was just alot cheaper to buy a kit then to buy separate bends.
Also I designed some SBC round port flanges using the LT1 bolt pattern at work, then CNC and surface ground them
The turned out perfect, I bolted them to the AFR's and the ports line up mint!

those flanges turned out nice. it must be nice to have access to a CNC! do you know who did the port work on the heads?? they should liven it up a little.

Woot a small amount more of progress, went over and finish welded the tubes together, then tacked it to the flange and welded the ends together.
Tomorrow I will bring it to work and up the ends all to one length then weld the collector on!
And yes it looks tight but I am going to redo the brake lines to clear good. And all the engine harness is binded up on them bc its just hanging there.

Well the driver side is done other then the 3"-2.5" reducer and the V-band.
The collector turned out really good! Was simple to weld and fill the gaps too...progress will be slow for the next few weeks as I move to my house this weekend and have some hardwood to lay and a bench to build in the garage!

Re: 87 Iroc LT1 Single Turbo Build
Well the headers are done... no clue where to place the turbo yet, seriously contemplating going back to a regular waterpump bc the electric takes up too much space. Well see tho.

Re: 87 Iroc LT1 Single Turbo Build
I guess they dont make a LT1 EFI single plane? I was looking for someone to do one for me for reasonable price but couldnt find anything so i just went Victor EFI. Didnt see one for LT1 but possibly it could be adapted to LT1 head bolt pattern. I"ve seen Stealth Rams converted to LT1 before and I did the LT1 manifold to SBC conversion before.

Re: 87 Iroc LT1 Single Turbo Build
I gotta say this is a great build.
That Single Plane intake not being an LT1 intake, how well do the ports line up on this?

Re: 87 Iroc LT1 Single Turbo Build
is the lt1 intake not very good for boost?
I'm kinda getting parts together to put an lt1 intake on my car that's supercharged so I can put the nicely ported super ram on the other n/a car I'm building. thinking I'd get better use out of them that way.
I didn't spend any time researching the lt1 intake and boost thou, just figured the shorter runner would be good up top, and maybe help me hook up better down low than the tuned super ram effect.
should I not be doing this swap? I'm going to use the northstar coil pack setup so I don't have to run a dizzy with the lt1.

Re: 87 Iroc LT1 Single Turbo Build
hmmm, well I guess I'll go ahead with my swap. but 80ft lbs sounds like a hell of a lot.
maybe I'll do a little research and see what this swap would cost me. but that TB doesn't look cheap
if the tune was the same, are you sure it didn't just run leaner and make more power because of it? 80 just sounds like a lot of TQ with only 30hp... anyways. cool build. good luck

Re: 87 Iroc LT1 Single Turbo Build
Hard to say with the tune, i'm willing to bet single plane and miniram type intakes will require different tunes so the big gain in power may have been from leaner conditions with the singleplane
Main reason i went with singleplane is because its suppose to be better for air distribution and since i planned on running batch fire code $59, i needed to ensure air distribution. I saw air problems with the HSR and was worried boost would complicate those matters.
Depends on the setup but if you go singleplane with elbow for lsx type throttle bodys, just use a stock LS1 TB. I run mid high 9's on my stock TB
