Those who run a mild turbo setup.

Is there anyone who's run a single or even twin turbo setup and has had nothing but functionality and dependability? It seems to be that everyone that has invested in a custom turbo setup has either got rid of the setup because of tuning aggrivation or something else. Just wondering. How many miles have you been running without any problems or excessive tuning.

Re: Those who run a mild turbo setup.

I am running a low boost (7 psi) twin setup and I really haven't had any problems. I made sure when I built the set up to take my time and do it right. I am running an Accel DFI gen 7 setup with a wideband and tuning has been fairly easy. I wouldn't dream of taking the turbos off. If I keep my foot out of it I get pretty good mileage, but I have a hard time taking it easy. I am addicted to boost now. I would say that I have probably 1500 miles on it now and the only problems I did have were unrelated to the turbos.

That's cool. I've never really heard any positives about long term drivabilty when it comes to custom Turbo work, especially with chevys. Good to know there's one out there.

I'm sure there are more. The key is to take your time and research what has worked.

Here is the post kind of documenting my build up.

I don't think a proper turbo setup is any more or less functional/dependable than a proper n/a setup. Both require good components and a good tune. Like jonarotz, I'm using an aftermarket DFI setup & wideband O2 which makes changing fuel & timing curves fast and easy. The only problems I have had were due to my own lack of tuning knowledge or trying to skip steps. Btw, I have close to 20k miles on my current setup and it is still a blast to feel the boost push you back into the seat.

Re: Those who run a mild turbo setup.

I think the common denominator here for a reliable setup is an aftermarket engine management system with a wideband oxygen sensor. My car has been going strong with a holley comander 950, WB O2, and twin turbos for about 10k miles, 4 transmissions, and 2 rears. The only thing I've touched on the motor were the injectors so I could go faster. A good mild setup got me engine reliability, but I keep putting junkyard trannys and rears in it.
