Is an intercooler really needed for <5psi???

Just like the title says, I plan on running around 5psi on my 10:1 CR engine and was just curious if an Intercooler is really needed.

I'd say so, especially with the 150HP shot.
Only way way to know I guess, watch the knock count without it.

Besides, what fun is only 5psi?

intercooling helps ANY amount of boost.

Re: Is an intercooler really needed for <5psi???

my advice would to be either keep the nitrous on it by itself, or swap out the pistons and put some real boost through it. I have a feeling you'll be disappointed with 5 psi.

I am only looking for around 500 flywheel hp nothing like 700 rwhp...yet. I need the turbos to generate about 100-150hp which shouldn't be a problem running low boost with a twin setup.

5psi can make a huge difference with 10:1 compression. friend of mine has a tiburon v6 and he put a roots blower on it. runs 6-8 psi and gained 100whp. he also has 10:1 compression. i run 20+psi on my turbo dodges but they are 8:1 compression.

Re: Is an intercooler really needed for <5psi???

true, but the amount of timing you'd have to pull just to run pump gas, it would just be more cost effective to just keep the nitrous on there.

FWIW i run about 25psi on mine 9.3:1 and C16

Yeah, I don't think you will need to take that much timing out. Besides you have to bump the timing back for nitrous use too.

If you can do your own fab work, or at least just tack weld it, you should put an intercooler on it. If not, or if its ony a track car, you could just run meth injection.

Re: Is an intercooler really needed for <5psi???

Don't know if this helps. I know someone that runs flat tops on a 350ci and 64cc heads that comes out to 9.6 to 10:1 CR. He is running 12 PSI of boost with a carb and no aftercooler or water/alky injection. I told him 8 PSI max., but he wanted more. It has no detonation at 24* timing on 93 octane. It surprises me. Every combo. is different I guess.

Re: Is an intercooler really needed for <5psi???

Wow. Kinda walkin the line there. It has to be at least slightly detonating. If the heads have a very good combustion chamber, that would partially explain it. He would make a good bit more power though if he cooled his intake air temps. How long has he been running it that way. You should keep track of that, lol. Let us know when it burns up. Secret scientific test.

Re: Is an intercooler really needed for <5psi???

No doubt, I agree. I helped him mod. the dizzy for the 24* max. and told him 8 PSI max.

If it were mine I would not run 12 PSI, but it doesn't detonate. The heads have decent chambers and the quench is small. That probably makes it work.

It is consistenly over-revved also. I don't see it lasting that long. In the 1/4 it runs out of gear. 12.7 ET at 100 MPH in a 3600 lb car......you do the math. It needs another gear or new rear gears.
