Re: cheap turbo build

Good luck!

You can buy the infamous SSAC headers off of ebay for a couple hundred then get the turbos at the junkyard. You might be able to do it for around $600 but it wont be intercooled and i wouldnt expect it to last too long...

Also, plan on alot of pissing around fabbing up the exhaust!

Re: cheap turbo build

i am planing my own twin turbo i have a 350 which as you know is a small block like your 305. i have spent close to 1500 and prolly need another 200 more in fittings and little things. i bought ssautochrome turbos and from what i read on here they are crap. i havent set anything up yet but i am thinking about selling everything and just supercharge. it seems to me that small blocks that are turboed arent as fast as i thought they would be, but if you want to run a single turbo you would have to take the exhaust pipes from both sides of the engine to the turbo you cant just run it off of one side. because the turbo will suck more air from say the left side of the motor and force more in to the motor than the right side can handle and you will have a ton more problems. just to keep that in mind.

your kidding a turbocharged SBC not as fast as you thought? any well matched turbo setup could blow a stock SBC apart... given the chance

Re: cheap turbo build

correct me if im wrong, but i seem to recall one of the domestic manufacturers using a turbo that only used one side of the motor back in the day..... im going to have to research that...

Re: cheap turbo build

vovlo does that with a few of their engines... probably one of the most complicated engine managment systems out there.

Yea.

Im sure they have thousands upon thousands of hours of R&D into that motor to get it running correctly!

Running a turbo off of one bank of cylinders requires a hell of alot of work to get the thing to run. Whereas you can spend an extra few hours and route the exhaust from one manifold/header into the other one that has the turbo on it.

Re: cheap turbo build

2 of those turbos even would be too small to make any kind of power. I have a pair that I was going to use on my 3.1 and decided to go with a larger single. Daves12secV6 has over 50k miles on one of the e-bay turbos mentioned above, just I heard to stay away from the ones with blue or black tags.

If you compare 2 identical cars, one with turbo and the other with a super charger, the turbo will make more power if both are set to the same PSI as it takes HP to run the super charger (not to mention the turbo doesn't add undue stress to the front of the crankshaft).

19irocz86, if you have the fab skills and a welder, you should be able to do like I am. I am working off stands in my driveway and using my bench in the garage to make parts. I have invested a little more than $700 and if you look at my thread Turbo 660 under way (click here) you can see how I used Daves12secV6 method (you don't have as much room under your hood, so your mount will be a little different). Like I said, though, it all depends on your fab skills.

Re: cheap turbo build

BTW, it was actually SAAB that used that design (maybe Volvo too), and it didn't stay in production long. There is a thread here in the power adder section that it was discussed, here's a link...

Re: cheap turbo build

No, it requires the same parts except your charge pipe will have to be longer.

Re: cheap turbo build

Read the link in post #10, also in my sig and you will see how I'm fabing mine in my driveway. If you have a welder, the oil system is really easy. Check out the "how to install a turbo" sticky in the v6 section, I know you have a small block, but the principals are the same.
