Turbo 660 is under way!

Re: Turbo 660 is under way!
WOOT, got the assy today. It is from a FWD and has a reluctor wheel, but that's OK. The problem is I wanted to bolt this in place of my current rotating assy. BUT the pistons are 26.4cc (for AL heads) vs. the current 12cc, so I will just have to press the pin on the rod(s) from my current pistons.<-----does that sound like my cousins, brother's, uncles mother who married my great grandfather, lmao?
Hopefully I'll be back in a month (or so) for some times for you guys to see .

Re: Turbo 660 is under way!
u cant just press the pins out and press the pins back threw new pistions.
u need a rod heater to heat the rods up so the pin slides inplace as the rod cools it locks itself onto the pin.
also u run the risk of runing the pistons when u press the pins out it has to be done with special mandrels to asuure u dont distort the pin holes, or stress the piston if u want to reuse them
----------
actually come to think of it u would only need to replace one rod, so u can take the one rod and piston and have it changed

Lord I hope it works out with your wife!
John D is long gone I am afraid. The address does not come back as good, I have both a cop buddy checking and I paid an investigator to do a "skip trace" on the name, but nothing is coming back. No record of a drivers licence in FL, nothing. I can't prosecute whom I can't find.

I wish your wife well. You seem like someone with great ambition and I am sure she is the same. It will turn out okay.
I know someone that lived life a little too freely with booze and broke some internal parts. He is now getting some from his kids. He is a tough person and I feel it will turn out well for him too. Nothing to do with your loved one, but ambitious people seem to have more luck.

Re: Turbo 660 is under way!
my prayers are with you and your family.... I am taking some time off from going to the track for a little bit.... I think I am going to turbo in the mean time.... I think I am going to do a setup similar to your old one.. with the y pipe.... I just have to save some money and then I will be calling you for some advice.... you still got my number?

Unless you left Nextel, yes.
Give me a buzz when you are ready for the turbo, I'm getting faster with installs now .

Re: Turbo 660 is under way!
I'm here in coral Springs, just like always . Let me finish up a couple of trades and see what we can do for your car. I didn't realize an M90 would be sufficient flow for a 350. Lots of 3.4 dohc people complain about the M90's, but I believe what 83 crossfire ta has to say, judging by all the other posts I have read about him .

Re: Turbo 660 is under way!
To clarify things… airflow is airflow. If you have a compressor forcing air into an engine, it doesn’t matter how big an engine you have after it, properly tuned, the engine will attempt to make hp proportionate to the air pushed into it…
That being said, with some mild porting, spun pretty close to its limit we have a single M90 moving enough air to move a roughly 3400# car to the high 10’s at near 120mph. If that’s enough hp for your 350 than the M90 is big enough, if not than it is not.
Make sense?

Re: Turbo 660 is under way!
huh... it’s been a long while since we did it but I do remember for sure that we ended up with almost exactly a 3:1 ratio… I believe that it was the smallest M90 pulley that fits without machining the blower snout and whatever the standard ATI crank drive pulley is for a mustang, I think it’s something like 2.65” and 8” or something like that…

Re: Turbo 660 is under way!
The S/C is nice, but the noise sitting at a stop light and cruising around gets annoying. If you don't mind the noise then it is all good. I went turbo because it is quiet all the time except when you want to go fast. The exhaust gets louder so I don't care about the turbo making noise too.

Re: Turbo 660 is under way!
A lathe mill combo, actually. If you re-read my earlier posts in this thread, my friend is a 30yr machinist. He is opening a new shop with my help and I have full access. The lathe is actually a CNC lathe and 4 axis mill combination made by Mori Seiki. We have a Lagun CNC mill, a Bridgeport manual, and a few other machines at the shop. (actually th Mori Seiki is being delivered Tue) I am interested in making some forged pistons, any input would be great from you or junk. My plan is to make one, and heat it to about 300* to see what kind of expansion I am dealing with (we have a 1600* max "parts warmer). Also some billet rods are on the agenda, right now are accounts consist of making SS threaded rods (20' long 316 w/3" thread each end), slots in 4340 (4" deep, 3" wide, 12" long), etc. Mostly production stuff (2x,000 parts a year). I am ready to do full on fab work, including block boring, head work etc, but my partner is into the mass production and said if I am keeping the machines running at night for him, I am free to do as I wish (he is paying me piece rate for his parts, and I pay a % for mine).

Re: Turbo 660 is under way!
There’s a lot more to piston design than you expect, different amounts of metal in different areas cause the piston to expand at an odd rate, so they are usually cut so they’re barrel shaped from a profile and slightly oval from the top. I personally don’t feel it’s worth the effort, if you want something custom I’d start with a good forging with some extra to it (like the TRW pistons, I’ve cut custom dishes out o f them) and then just modify the parts that need to be custom and leave the rest to the pros, by the time you get enough forged blanks and do the machining you’ll be way behind doing it all yourself.

Re: Turbo 660 is under way!
I'm fimiliar with the odd shaping of the pistons and we have an oven capable of 1800* to heat the part and measure it for expansion. I'm still going to try it even with the complexity. My plan was to get a forged piston and make a copy of it, then put it through some heat cycles to determine if it is feasable.
If all else fails, yes I will be buying aftermarkets to modify for use. The problem is that v6 pistons are expensive because each set being fully custom (unless they have made a set in the past) and most companies want $800 to $1k to make a set of 6.
----------
Yes and more. We will be getting sand blasters, a bigger oven (for coating), welders, and more.
This time next year, I plan on having a full custom shop set up. At first we are doing production work and have several orders in for anywhere up to 20,000 parts a year.

Re: Turbo 660 is under way!
Need to look under your hood again. Might have to get rid of A/C . Then again, I was thinking of selling my turbo, you could buy it off me, and get another. ttypecamaro is working on some new turbo headers, and think he was selling his old ones. This way, we could bolt it on fairly quickly once you pick up another turbo. Let me know when!

Re: Turbo 660 is under way!
let me know..... I was thinking about doing a single turbo..... twin would be nice!!!! I am interested....I found one of those sbc single turbo headers on ebay.... relatively cheap.... I might want to try that.... I don't want massive boost as of yet...... I would not mind like 5lbs.... I would be happy with a 40hp increase..... I do like the S/C too.... Let me know what we could do...
