Nitrous Help for a Beginner

I am looking to put nitrous on my car and am interested in opinions on a safe level, brand of kit, E.T. improvements, etc... from people who have used it.

Here is what I have... 1991 RS w/ a 1995 LT1 and a 4L60E auto tranny.

10.5 to 1 compression, zz9 cam - adv dur int282 ext287 - dur @.050 int212 ext226 - lift int.483 ext.520 - lobe seperation 112, pro mag roller rockers 1.6 intake 1.5 exhaust, AFR heads - 187 cc intake runners - 50cc chambers, edelbrock headers, OEM IROC ehxaust (sorry, the police tell me I need quiet exhaust), 52mm throttle body, adjustable FPR, MSD Digital 6 ignition, STOCK 350 LT1 - oem cast pistons crank rods etc....

My 1/4 mile time is in the 13.27 @ 104 range. I know there are obvious things hurting me like the stock torque converter, stock exhaust, suspension designed for road racing, not drag, etc, but it is a daily driver (and a fun one at that).

Building a 383 crossed my mind, but for several reasons, I would rather just leave it alone.

My goals are to be able to run a 12.90 quarter mile (it burns to get beat by a stock supercharged mustang cobra). I do not want to hurt my engine. My ignition has a retard function and I would only be using the nitrous on about six days a year @ about five quarter mile passes a day. I know my compression is a little high for nitrous but I only need to drop my ET about 4 to 5 tenths. I was thinking I could accomplish this with a 75 horse shot and be plenty on the safe side, but I know little about the stuff.

Any and all input is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You should be able to run a 75 shot and it would put you where you want to be. I would consider that a safe deal. It all depends on how much you use it.

If you are running the lt1 fuel injection my suggestion is buy the Compucar Bag O' Heat kit. It is the best kit out there for beginners. It is a dry kit. I know alot of guys running it on lt1's and ls1's and not having any problems. I put one on my truck almost 2 yrs ago and just wish I would have done it sooner.

If your wanting to get into the 12.90's dont spray. Full exhaust, torque arm, lower control arms, the right springs and shocks, good tires, sub frames. all of those will get you below a 12.90

Screw the exhaust, get an electric cutout. Righ after the y pipe b4 the cat

I love mine Quiet when i want it to be and wide open when i want it to be

Lca reloc would be a good idea as well as some sticky rear tires

Exhaust flow is one of, if not, the most important part of a nitrous motor.

Now, as far as kits go, I've seen great results w/ NX kits and you get quality parts. NOS isn't horrible, but for a little more money, I'd be all about NX. You get bigger solenoids, and if you shop around you can find them for less than $500 brand new. Used will go for around $300.

Your motor should be fine. Don't use platinum plugs, make sure you have good fuel pressure and always use 92 oct. or better. Retard the timing 2* for ever 50hp you spray. Don't spray under 3k rpm and everything will work out fine. Start out w/ a 50 shot and work your way up. For a daily beater, I wouldn't go past 100 shot. Just to keep it around a little longer.
