help with weiand 142

i have a 350 sbc that i am building and i'm planning on buying a weiand 142 for it. i have a question for guys running it. i converted my sbc to a s-belt setup from an 88 iroc. my question is do i need to order the extra long snout for the blower or will the long snout be fine. i am running a fan clutch setup in the car. if i have to i will run electric fans, but just trying to save as much money as possible. will shimming of any pulleys be in order to fit? thanks for anyhelp..

The standard long nose version won't clear. The blower belt and the serp belt will try to occupy the same space by about 1/4". You need the extra long nose version which is emissions-legal and costs more money. It also can only be had with the smallest (6") bottom pulley. If you plan on pushing up around 400 HP or more you'll run out of pulleys to get the job done. I hate to make the following suggestion but..... you'd probably be money ahead (and have more "headroom" for greater power) by switching back to v-belts and using the standard long nose version.

My Malibu is making 390 at the rear wheels with a 142 blower on top right now. I've got good heads (AFR) but it's otherwise a pretty mild combo.

Cam recommendation, if it's not too late- stay small. I just took out my Comp Cams stick a couple weekends ago (224/230* on a 114* LSA, installed on a 110* ICL) for a smaller Summit house brand cam (214/224* on a 112* LSA, installed on a 111* ICL) and I like the change so far. The little 142 just can't move enough air to go wasting precious boost out the exhaust from a too-big cam. Unlike a big XX-71 class blower you don't have enough pulley selection available to work well with a big cam. You need to use what little airflow it's capable of EFFICIENTLY. That means staying very conservative with the cam. You end up pulleying it up withing an inch of it's life (where it becomes very inefficient) and still don't get much boost.

Compared to my previous cam with NO other changes I'm making about the same peak power but with more torque throughout the midrange, smoother idle and boost is about 1 PSI higher even using the same pulleys (6 PSI now vs. 5 psi previously). I'm currently using a 7" bottom pulley and stock 3.07" top pulley.

thanks damon for the good info, i plan on running afr180 74cc heads that i ordered. i was really thinking of converting back to vbelt setup and just end this mess. can i find a belt setup cheap or is it going to be expensive? the cam i have was picked out with help from comp. i am running a full roller setup and the cam they picked out was extreme 276 using 1.6 rocker (around .523 .534 112 lsa) i told them i plan on only running tops 6psi which will be fine for me.

I'd just swipe the entire accessory system off a v-belt 3rd gen. NOT the weirdo v-belts + serpentine belt setup they used in 86-87. I'm talking REAL V-belts from 85-down. A setup off a g-body car (Malibu/Monte Carlo and other GM variants) is basically the same thing in those years. Zillions of those cars in junkyards across the land. Remember to get the water pump (non-reverse rotation), the special double-sided stud that acts as the fulcrum point and spacer for the power steering pump bracket and ALL the brackets up around the A/C that attach over on the exhaust manifold. EVERYTHING.
