Smog legal Weiand blower install
So far so good. Got the lower pulley on and the intake. Set the blower on and the pulley belt hits smack-dab right where the stock v-belt for the smog pump is. Darn. So much for smog legal bolt-on kit. CARB EO my hindquarters...
Holley's tech guys were less than helpful, telling me "We bought WEIAND in '99, we don't know how the stuff was engineered."
Off to the wrecking yard.
After hunting through various wrecks at the junkyard I finally found a 305 smog pump that is driven off the alternator belt and sits back about 1". The donor is a 1978 Chevy Station Wagon. I harvested the pulleys and pump. Hopefully, we will be able to reuse my pump and just use the new brackets and low-profile divertor valve.
Other issue is the carb poking above the hoodline an inch and 1/2. Really going to have the Mad Max look when I'm done. Fortunately 3rd gen hoods are only $30.00 at the wrecking yard!!
Tomorrow I'm cutting up the used hood to make room for the carb, blower idler pulley and Street Scoop.
More to follow I'm sure.....

I cut the hole for the blower yesterday, turned out great! Did you know Camaro V-8s sit an inch or so more toward the passenger's side of the car? Good to know if you start cutt'n hoods. Can' t go off centerline, have to measure from fender lip to valvecover.
I guess this to give the driver more room maybe?
Today I glassed up my own ram air-style scoop to sit around the blower and dress it up a bit. I used a pair of Fourth-gen Firebird hoodvents reversed and set into a 1-1/2" raised deck. It looks a lot like MAD MAX now!! Except, of course, my blower is going to be real!!!

Always fun dealing with issues like that. You got the super-long noser version and it STILL hit the smog pump belt? That's the smog pump that's driven off the water pump pulley?
My regular long-nose version would have hit by maybe 1/2" and it's almost an inch shorter than the super-long-nose version. I would thought the super-long-nose would have cleared easily. Guess not.
BTW- lots of cars have the engine offset to the pass. side a little. Steering column-to-exhaust clearance is at a premium on most V6/V8 application.

No the motor doesn't shift like that. Besides my mounts are new.
Damon, it is the long nose not the super-long nose that I have because my car is an'85. The ad said 69-85 use long nose and 86-91 use super long nose. I didn't want to send the blower back 'cause I aleady cleaned it up and painted it. I figured it would be easier 2 find pulleys and brackets from another car that would work and I did off the '78 Wagon w/305 motor.

So we put the new thermostat housing on and are about to bolt the blower on, when we realize it doesn't fit! The snout rubs against the thermostat housing. Two and 1/2 hours of grinding and test-fitting later, we got it to fit.
"Simple Bolt on Kit"
Right!
Had to remove slightly more han 1/8" of material from the housing and the snout casing. Fortunately, my blower is unpolished, so it has a nice thick case to start with.

I plan on posting pix once I finish the roll in the camera and get it developed..probably next week.
So far, got the blower on and the carb. Routed all the vacuum lines and smog tubes. Put the fan bak on and the shroud, now just need to plumb the fuel and figure out upper rad hose, and the throttle linkage....hmmmm.
Won't be long now!

Got the fuel line hooked up, filled the radiator and fabricated an upper hose. Took it for a ride.
Pretty damn fun!
Much better power all across the powerband. Bottem end torque is great, midrange is great, and on the freeway....well, let's just say it gets right up to speed.
It makes a slight whir noise too, almost a hiss like semi trucks make.
No pinging yet and the operating temp is the same.
I reccomend this kit to anyone who wants to wake up their little 305's and remain smog-legal.
