what turbo to run?

ok so this weekend i found a mini truck that had a tpis l-98 motor with a turbo setup running around 18lbs of boost, he ran mid-low 10s all day, i talked to him for a while and im now thinkin of runnin a turbo. i cant remember the turbo hes runnin but he said its way over kill for what i would want and that its even a lil over kill for him, i have hypert flat top pistons and a steel crank, he said i could run 5-10 up to like 12 lbs of boost with race gas and the right tune, so now here is my question what would be a good turbo to run, only want to run 5-10 lbs of boost, and i need to to be ably to drive in traffic and through town, its goin in my 92 chevy fullsize with a 91 rebuilt bigger cam tpi motor!! what do you think?

What are your HP/preformance goals. WHat about your desired rpm range? There are as many or more variables in sizing a turbo than there are for sizing a cam.

Sounds like you are shooting for street drivability, like I am with my S10 project. Here are some details:

-1990 S10 Truck
-1995 Camaro LT1 V8
-1996 Camro T56 6 Speed
-Custom Tube Headers
-Big FMIC
-Garrett Big Shaft TO4S in a 60-1 Compressor cover(4" in, 2.5" outlet)/T66 P Trim Turbine set for @ 10psi Boost (Street), ~18Psi (Race)
-Goals- 550-600 HP, 11's in the quarter, weekend cruiser

well i would like to keep my motor the way it is with the hypert pistons and steel crank, so if im goin to run a turbo i dont think i can go much over 12lbs, but right now the motor is arounf 310-330 hp, im not realy sure what hp i want to be gettin but i do know i would like to run low 13s in my truck, also i need it to drive just fine in the traffic and on road trips, i dont knwo much about turbos at all so im not sure what i want or need.

Buy these books and read them:

Turbochargers by Hugh MacInnes (excellent tech, but the book is a little old)

Maximum Boost by Corky Bell (less stellar tech info, but fairly current with lots of good pictures)

That should get you on your way.

The cam is not ideal, especially for a street turbo cam. I'm not a cam expert, but it looks like the lobes are a little too close and the exhaust duration is too long. You will have some reversion taking place at the end of the exhaust stroke, especially if you size your turbo too small (high exhaust manifold pressure).

WHat heads are you running?

im runnin the stock cast iron heads right now, i dont want to get new heads intell i find out what i want to do forsure, but im lookin at the trick flows or if i can find a good used set of afrs ill do that, when i had the motor rebuilt i forgot to ak the compression so im not even sure what im runnin now for comp. block is .40over, i belive its a basic feelpro rebuild kit, hypert flat top pistons!

turbo's don;t like overlap in a camshaft. In most cases the stock cam is a good turbo cam .

I got a T-62 kit from BBS turbo . It was made for the L-98 TPI . They got a 650hp version ( thats what I got ) They ended up with 537 rwhp on their project forebird withonly 6 psi of boost
