Nitrous Ideas

Hey, Ive been dableing with the idea of nitrous for quite sometime and im really thinking about doing it some time soon. I want to put a plate system on a 355 and i have no clue what ammount of hp i want to shoot into the car.The setup i plan on puting this on is of corse a 350 bored .30 over with flat top pistons and the basic internals, Unknown cam (im the 3 owner and second owner had no idea what the first guy put in there) ported 882 heads with larger vlaves 2.02,1.60 Perfromer EPS Intake with a 1 inch carb spacer and holley 650cfm carb. Its got Headman headers into 2 1/2 true duals into Flowmaster 40's. Its got a built th350 with a 2800 stall conveter and a posi rear with 3.73 gears. Now how much hp do you think i should inject or is nitrous just not for this car? I would be pestering my pops with these questions but hes sleeping and any help would be thanked

I think your always safe going with a 100-125 shot, possibly a 150 shot but i wouldn't go higher than that, after that point it would be 'safer' to run better aftermarket forged internals, but thats pretty much all you really need.. when u get up the the 200 hp range it'd be in the best interest to do a separate fuel system with race gas (C12, C14, C16) or at least mix some race gas in the mix with your regular 93 octane..

I have a 383 which i run on 93 octane, and on my fogger system i run a separte fuel system, small fuel cell, its own fuel pump and filter with VP C12 race gas. this is the safest way of doing things.

very good advice snkr. you know i sold a crap load of nitrous kits over the last 4 years and never once did i talk someone into buying on. i always wrote down what they needed and what they need to do tuning wise. remember your plugs!!! if i were you ,and it looks like you have maybe around 9-9.5 compression, is use an ngk ur5 up to a 100shot. anything more id go to an ngk r5673-7. gap the plug at about .32 for up to a 100hp, and id go to .28 for any thing higher. id pull at least 4 degrees of timing on 100hp(poss. 6, thats what worked best for me,you can experiment) and id pull at least 2 for every 50hp more. id be very careful when you go to anything over 175hp, single plane intakes are great but you can have problems. oh and another thing

NITROUS IS FOR EVERYTHING!

I'd really suggest going down 8-10 degrees in timing per 100 hp on the spray... Just get you a bottle pressure gauge and keep it up around 900psi and you'll fly!

I have been told by a friend who works for a NX dealer that carb plate systems used with dual plane intakes will cause the outer four cylinders (1,7,2 and 8) to run lean and if I care about my motor I need to either do a direct port system or single plane intake.

However, plate systems seem to have been around forever so they can't be all that bad.

I think that applies more to Ford smalblocks that have a spread intake port spacing, and therefore greater variations in intake runner length. I have personally used a 275HP shot on a 305
mule motor (would not take any more, at this level it was saturated with nitrous) with a Performer RPM intake. Ran about 15 bottles trough that motor, did not care what happened to it at all, wanted to see how much a 2 bolt main, cast crank, stock rod motor will take. Did have forged pistons, quality valves, small cam, ARP main and headstuds as well as rodbolts.
Stock oiling and good timing chain. Anyhow, this was a NOS BigShot system with MSD 6AL and retard box. Had a good tune and good gas AC Delco R43TS plugs. After a while, the engine started to
lose power and run like crap. We tore it down, and the only thing wrong with it was the cheapo valvesprings broke from high RPM-s. Nothing else. Pistons fine, rings fine, bearings fine. That engine has been replaced with a 355 since, but I still have it. Sorry if I rambled, but what I am trying to say is, You will have no problems with a dual plane on a Chevy with a plate nitrous, as long as You have everything set up properly. Have fun!
