PAXTON SN 2000 rebuild

Well, it happended last year. I need to rebuild the sn2000 I have heard all of the horror stories of these chargers and plan on purchasing a procharger in the next year. I did not want to sell a broken supercharger so i learned how to rebuild the unit. Freaking e a s y! If any of you fellow thirdgen ers have a ball drive unit, I will be happy to walk you through the rebuild process I plan on keeping mine for one more year, then I'm going with a D1SC for more boost!:lala:

yep. it's simple. How many miles do you get out of your paxton unit before you need a rebuild? I got 15K out of mine in 4 years.

I'd like your help

I have an SN-93 that has been sitting on my workbench for 2 years. The thing started whining after 1200 mile on a rebuild. I dont want to spend 700.00 to have Paradise Wheels re-build it again.

I live in Bremerton, WA.

Would love to hook up if you are still near Seattle.

Thanks,

Jeff

You should post some pics of the rebuild, step-by-step. I have 2 SN93s that need a rebuild. What parts did you have to buy?

It is really easy! take the case apart. Before you do this, mark the case where it separates. You must make sure the pump is in the 6 o clock position. IF you do not mark the case, there is a hole at 12 o clock. Just set the case up so the hole is at 12 o clock, then mark the two sides of the case. The input side usually does not need rebuilding unless you feel the charger not spinning freely when the case is taken apart in two halves. The ball drive unit is what usually needs to be replaced. Take the back half off the charger and then the impeller. Once you have the case taken apart in two halves, There is a retaining doughnut piece that holds the race bearings (part of the ball drive unit) in place. Take that off. Next, remove the large thin shim. Then pull the first race out. Then the *****. PUll out the output shaft. Then, turn the case over and take a rubber mallet and tap around the back of the case. Turn it back over and pull the second race out. There is a beveled washer with some shims behind the washer. Remove thoes. Be careful not to dammage teh rear seal where the impeller fits into.....60 bucks for the seal! Now that the case is apart and the ball drive unit is out, you need to order the ball drvie races, output shaft, and *****. Should cost between 300-400 bucks. Install reverse. To make the races fit nice while putting it back together, put the races in the freezer for about 10 minutes, put a little heat to the case and they drop right in.

How did you get your case apart? I have the rear plate removed and the impeller off....... Now what? This SN93 has the six "bolts with rounded heads" around the front input side.

Are you sure they are not torque head bolts? IF not, hmmm, not sure, but once you remove the 6 bolts, replace them with hex or allen bolts. Make sure you mark the two cases so you can lighn up the case proplerly.

OK, so I'm slow! The plugs came out fine. This SN93 only has 1240(!) miles on it since its last rebuild. One of the races has two "chunks" gone out of it. The other only has a very light wear ring around it. The ***** are shiny with no wear marks at all. The input side spins up fine to 2700 rpm on my drill press with trans fluid on the bearings.

I am waiting on Paradise Wheels to get back to me on a price for the 2 races, a cooler, and the plugs (dont ask...)

I will post a sticky once I get my situation under control with my charger...purchasing parts.ect... I would hate to have the company increase the price of hte rebuild kit becaseu of us talking of how to.......you know what I'm getting at. Gvie me a week, maybe two. Step by step instructions. Make sure to mark teh case so when you take it apart, the pump will be facing straight down! Very important for proper oiling.

If your races are bad, the ***** are bad! the ***** are desighned to be softer than teh impeller shaft and races so if the ***** fail, you might be able to salvage teh rest. as far as the input side, if yoiu can move it freely with no catches, it's probally fine. If you feel the pulley catching while it turns in your hand, time for new input side bearings.

I talked to Paradise Wheels today. Craig offered to sell "2 good used races" for $50. I sent digital pics of the ***** and he wanted to know if they were new...

With only 1200 miles on this unit since they rebuilt it, they seem to think that maybe the races were flawed...

So $50 for the races, $30 for the plugs, $150 for the impeller and $200 for the cooler. They also offered new races for $100.

kwick, first off, the tolarances of the ***** are so percise that you can not tell the tolarances by the naked eye. That beign said, They could LOOK great, but still be oval shaped by .001 causing the unit to fail. If you have a whine sound, I would bet it is because of the *****, hard to say. Rebuild it, if it does not produce boost or makes a wierd sound, shut it down, get new *****! Just be prepared to shut the unit down asap if any strange noised come out of it!

Along the lines of Raiden's request, in response to giving Paradise Wheels an excuse to raise prices for a percieved higher demand, does anyone know if they offer a specific rebuild kit or do they attempt to piece meal a few parts together based upon described symptoms.

Just curious before I call him.

Thanks,

Fratsit

Paradise wheels owns the rights to the balll drive parts. You can purchase the parts used or new. used ball drive parts will run 200, new 300. I purchase mine new, however, I will purchase a second set of used.

My only concerns of making a "sticky" out of this is the matter of "not stepping on the owner's toes". PM me and we can talk directions.

I'll do that. I am not quite ready to tear into my SN-93 just yet. I just dropped a good chunk of change on new seats and am going to be ordering a carpet kit from Car Motorsports.

I'll be in touch when I am ready. Thanks for the offer to help.
