worth the hassel??

i dont no if this is considered a poswer adder but whatever. anyway i got a fiberglass hood and i got the k&n lid and filter for my air filter. i was thinking of cutting out an area under the 2 flaps but not all the way to the end so i can screw cover back on when raining. anyway i did a photochop below and i was wondering if u guys could tell me if will make a diffrence and should i do it?? (i dont no anything about ram air so i dont no what will make a diffrence)
thanks

That's a good question man. I'm not sure if my hood is fiberglass (probably steel), but I'd heard of a way to get plumbing under the hood to feed my carb. I've spent quite some time looking for that system but never found it. I deffinately think it's a good idea to cut out only part of the hood and not all of it so you can close it when it's raining (like you said). I'm no expert, but I'd imagine that even if it didn't give you a bunch more power, it still might help relieve some of the heat that's building up under the hood. I hope you get some answers to this because I'm also interested. :lala:

The '82 Z28s with the Crossfire motor had a glass hood that had functional flappers.. prolly better off looking for one of those.

ya those hood are a bit hard to find. but still back to the question is it worth the hassle i got the same hood (fiberglass) but car was not CFI so did not have flaps. so if i cut those holes there (4" by 2")each square hole i think>guessing

both holes directly overtop of 14" K&N air filter LID,with K&N open element 14 air filter, then going into a holley carb would it creat a good ram air effect??? i think it should help alot once speed is up there because all air is going right into carb with no travel distance. but like i said i dont know much about this i am just useing my comman sence here lol.

so ya what u guys think?
oh its on slant to to direct air down so thats gotta count lol

well I don't have that hood but I have an SS hood that is cut open all the way. I put on K&N air filters (lid and regular filter) and yeah I works for ram air. I am not sure if a ducting would help or not but just having the hood open makes a big difference. one thing though, if you have a 160 degree thermostat and do a lot of highway driving you may not want to do this. the open hood really cools the engine at speed with the low thermostat on the high way my engine temp can go as low a 125 degrees. mind you that is during the summer when it is 80 or so outside!!!!!! if you have the stock thermostat you would prob. be alright. if you just do more in town driving then it is fine with the low thermostat. I might also mention my car is stored winters so really cold weather is something I don't deal with.

Those hoods are pretty wild. They were available with both crossfire and carbed cars and the flapper doors would flip up (so you could see them sitting inside the car) when the ecm told them to (crossfire) or when a vacuum sensor dropped low enough (carbed car). Last I heard you can still get the sensor and actuator from GM, but there was also an air box/plenum and a special air cleaner housing that connected to all of that (the carbed one was different then the crossfire one). I've got a complete setup from my TA sitting in the garage (same deal but the door was inside the hood scoop (that hood was later used as the formula hood, and that was the reason why it had webbing that looked like something was supposed to be attached to it from underneath).

Without an air box underneath it I don't think it's worth the effort. For the engine to actually use the air it needs a stagnant pocket of air around the air cleaner which is why air boxes have some volume to it. If you just had an opening you'd only get a rush of air over the filter which on a bad day or at high speed could actually result in a slightly lower pressure around the air cleaner and on a rainy day could end up with a rough running engine (most air boxes have some baffles and drains to allow water out without it getting into the engine).

Well, I'd have to look around (I parted the car out so I can't take pics on the car anyway, I think I've got a pile of parts sitting in a box somewhere…), I'm sure that I've got some pics somewhere but I don't really have where to put them up anyway if I found them. You couldn't have looked that hard, the first link I got when I googled had pics of most of the 4bbl parts:
http://www.goingfaster.com/spo/cold_...r_the_l03.html
(I have no idea of what the body of the text is going on about... to tired to really pick through it)

I think that there used to be an adding the factory cold air in the FAQ on this page or one of the big f-body sites out there also, but I haven't bothered looking…

That's a shame... I always liked that hood. If I had a camaro right now I'd probably offer to buy it off of you. That and I haven't seen any ram air hoods that I think look at all good on a 3rd gen...

I agree. I also haven't seen many aftermarket hoods that look good on thirdgens. I'm kinda partial to a sleeper look. And I don't really have a lot of money. With all it would cost to buy and paint a new hood, I'd rather take that money and spend it under the hood if ya know what I mean.
