Malibu track times
Well made it to Kilkare...
Arrived late, was packed and only got 2 runs before dark.
14.84 @ 99
14.44@ 98
Shifts @ 5500
Boost 10psi
Traction is nil.. seems the posi died, spun one tire 1000 feet (so I am told) Deposits agree that one was spinning.
Runs made on Radial TA's
and the 305 lived.... <G>

whats the AFR like?
seem like it should have made some good MPH.. I'm having problems with mine running hot.. That sucks too.. Got the stock hood on it
LT1's are screwy about bleeding the coolant, hopefully thats just it
have you had any cooling problems?

WB showed low 13.. high 12 AFR.
One guy commented that the Malibu was spinning the pass side tire most way down the track.. A light smoke was visible according to him.. I can't confirm it, tho the pass compartment was hazy..The pass quarter/wheelwell/frame was heavily covered. Looking for a used locker, or I may rebuild the trac-loc.
Other than developing a exhaust tick.. the 305 seems to have survived.. Going to do a comp check and compare to a earlier check, etc, etc.
Since this was the first time to the track for the Malibu... I didn't run any logs. Wanted to worry about the car, not the puter.
I'll take some next time out.
Have to find some drag radials, or theres a chance my nephew has some slicks handy.. Hes got a Malibu too.. 350 on juice, low 12's last I heard..
And fix the posi..change studs.. etc, etc..
No problems cooling.. stock thirdgen radiator, dual fan. set to 175*.
cheers, Bob

What type of rear end is in your Malibu? Check out SLP, they sell take off differentials for $99. They aren't real high speed but they are good enough to get you low 12's and for that price!
I started tuning mine in tonight, man what a bear
Your lucky you can use a 749. I've got a problem with it being lean and popping backat anything over 20% throttle between 1500rpm and 3000rpm.. I think my solution is ging to try to get it into PE mode VIA TPS settings and at that RPM get the PE enrichment up
It keeps blowing off vaccum lines too.
Hey potentially good news though I got that datamaster dyno to show 430rwhp and 430 rwtq which is pretty cool because it was within 10hp of a dyno on motor.

dude that so sucks, especially since malibus are 26 spline like 87 and older third gens not 28 spline like the S-10's, 88 up thirdgens, and the ones SLP is selling. but I see them on ebay all the time. make sure you look for this when purchasing: LINK

Thanks, but.. I have a 9 inch with a 4 pinion trac loc. I can either get a clutch kit, or look for a used detroit locker, 28 spline.
All in all it was a fun time..

Hey, glad to hear you got it out racing- something I haven't had the weather opportunity to do here in Philly for a long time!
You got more left in it, that's for sure. Your MPH looks like a solid 14.0 but even that's going to go higher when you stop wasting half the engine's output through a spinning tire for 3/4 of the track!
If that thing doesn't run a mid-high 13 @ 105 with ANY kind of traction, I'd be very surprised.

For dirt cheap super-easy posi action jsut dig a spare rear out of a junkyard GBody and weld the spider gears. $50 plus your time and labor. Don't drive it on the street much like that, though.
My brother, being the terminal copycat that he is, ALSO bought a G-body Malibu (1979) to go bracket racing this summer down in Norfolk. He figures he'll run in the 12s or thereabouts. It's a track-only car and he's making his first shake-down runs just welding up the spider gears. No, it won't last long that way, but finding these rears in a junkyard is real easy and cheap.

Definitly more power than I can hook with presently..
I had to launch very soft.. 1900/2K other wise it just smokes..
Once moving, more than 3/4th throttle just lights up the tires.
Now at least I have my baseline.. and I can go from there.
Going to see how hard I can push this old 305, I think I can get a high 12 with some tuning, and traction.
My second run was against a 90ish tang, he ran 13.7 @98.
thanks, BW

I would like to see the time slip stats to get excited about what could have been.

Hey Bob-
When's the next time your taking your car to the track?
I want to see this beast in person!
I was there the Friday before, for the street legal drags, but didn't get to make it there yesterday.....
I only clicked off a 16.0 flat with my 79K mile TPI 305...LoL
Well it's good to see your Malibu made it out with only a broken rear & not an engine.....
BTW, next time you see Grumpy- could you ask him if he plans on having another "pow-pow"? If he's ever going to be at the track w/ you, let me know, because I'd like to meet him in person too...
I'm trying to pick up on the PROM tuning theory's, but the learning curve is somewhat steep....so what better way, than to see it in person!:hail:

I can drop over at your house too...no problem. I'll send you a PM shortly here, to see when your not busy.
Ok, I'm glad to hear Grumpy is having another meeting. I think I've read almost every post he's made here, and came to be a fan of his tuning talent. I've been more less trying to understand the theory of engine management (why's and how's), but would like to see it all first hand.
The T/A natn'l is sometime in August, right?
You know the ironic thing is, I didn't even know the T/A Nat'l even existed up until a couple months ago
Needless to say, I'm going this year...come Hell or high water.

Heh… seems like the eaton cars are having a hard time this year, and breaking posis.
We took my brother’s LTD up to the track again Friday night. I was standing around looking like a homeless guy wearing a torn and greasy shirt since we just finished pulling a caddy 500 out of a ’70 Coupe Deville (took 3 of us under 4 hours including putting together an engine stand and engine crane, clean up and towing the body away).
Made a few small changes trying to figure out why it’s MPG is down about 4mph from last year. Last week on the video I shot we noticed that it was doing a funny stutter off the line that we suspected was a timing issue, so he locked out the timing advance, which helped the launch but caused the car to break up at the top (I suspect that the advance mechanism in the distributor was vibrating some causing some spark scatter). That resulted in a really wonky tune, so rich below about 4000 that it was doing all sorts of weird surging and stumbling, and wouldn’t idle without 2 footing it, and it was running out of fuel up top.
In the end, the car only made 2 passes completely taking out the posi (making some funky noises on the way to the track and wouldn’t spin the passenger tire at all). Ended up running 11.7’s at 116 with 1.61 60’s (identical 60’s on both runs, spinning out of the hole).
