Got a crack in one of my turbos.

I got a couple of cracks on my exhaust housing. Don't know about the other one cause I haven't taken that one apart yet. Here is a pic of it. The cracks are by the wastegate hole.

I was wondering, do I need a wastegate for the exhaust or could I just get away with a blow off valve? Cause the way it looks now, I can't use the downpipe and wastegate that came with the turbos cause there just isn't enough room so I need a downpipe weld flange and I'm hoping I don't need to fab in a wastegate, but if I have to I have to. Thanks. Oh yeah, where can I get a down pipe weld flange?

You need to have a waste gate. The BOV only stops excessive pressure build up on the compressor side causing it to chatter. The waste gate prohibits the turbo from over-spooling.

Depending on what you want to do, you can remove the stock wastegate with one of these click me! but you will have to add an aftermarket version elsewhere in the system.

can you have the crack welded and then ground down to meed specs??? i think a mig welder could do it with no problem on that cast iron housing

I would guess that you shouldn't. It doesn't mean you can't have it done though. I have a sneaky suspicion that the drastic heat cycles that the housing goes through would make the fix short lived.

The easiest/cheapest route would be to find a completely shot turbo of the same type and swap out the housing.

I'm looking into buying a couple of those block off plates. I e-mailed him last night about buying 2 of them but he hasn't replied yet. I'm gonna run it and see what happens. This project is getting spendy. Just bought an oxy/acet setup and that costed me $450. I'm into this for well over a $1000 and haven't fabbed one thing yet. All part of the fun I guess.

If you wanted to try and fix it, I would take a die grinder with a cut off wheel and grind a valley out of the crack. THen take a torch and heat the housing just where the crack is. While it is still hot, weld it. The worse it will do is crack again later. Changing the housings shouldn't be real hard later if this does happen.

I totally understand spending lots-o-cash and not getting anywhere. My $1500 brake conversion turned into a $4000 nightmare. That did include a lot of "might as well" parts though

I have a little over $1400 in parts for my turbo project and I havn't even built the motor yet!

Hang in there. At least the tools you buy will last you longer than the project and car.

You need a wastegate. It controls the speed that the turbo spins at. A blow off just controls the pressure in the ducting before the throttle.

Those cracks are fairly typical in that area on T3's. Actually, much more typical of the .48AR housings then the .63's. You can have them welded and then machined (the welding will warp the area a little), you can fill them with brazing rod, or you can leave them alone. You won't see a performance change and even welding them they will come back (brazing them may fix them permanently if the temp through there stays low enough).

I wouldn't worry about them. I think that one of mine had a crack starting (not sure, it was really small and looked like more of a casting defect), but I wouldn't mess with them if they were mine.

BTW, you can do the welding (if you do it) with your mig...

The guy on E-bay that has those flanges finally e-mailed me. He wants $67 for 2 of them shipped. I'll be getting a money order today.
