406 heads

I know this has prob been posted a million times but i cant seem to find it on the search so ill ask again.. I am going to be getting heads really soon and i am not sure what i want yet. I have a 406 (.30 over 400)small block, comp cams 268 series, keith black 30 cc dish pitsons, 5.7 rods, 750 cfm edelbrock carb, 3 inch american thunder exhaustm, hedman headers/ y pipe, roller tip rockers, performer rpm intake, stock crank. I was considering the vortec heads but i kind of wanted to get the edelbrock performer rpm aluminum heads.... how much more power do you think either of these heads would give me over my stock gm 64 cc 1.94 intake 1.50 exhaust heads that i have right now.????

Just wanted to let you know that I don't think that the track 1's will work with the headman headers and y-pipe. I know with mine it is stricktly a long tube header type head. I'm running the angle plug track 1's. I found out the hard way being that I was already running the SLP headers and y-pipe. When I called brodix they told me that they didn't know of any shorty header that would work with those heads. There might be some, I just haven't found any yet.

Yea, you can get the Brodix the same way, I just wanted to bring it to his attention to maybe ask and see if it would make a difference before he just assumed that the heads that he buys will work with his headers...........You know, kind of save on the head ache issue.

Vortec has been beat to death. Definately the best bang for the buck. Check out Car Craft a couple of months back. It was on the cover. They check seat pressure, flowed the heads, etc. Basically everything you wanted to know about Vortec. They're just cast versions of the LT1 head. They work about as well as the 041 castings too. They need to be ported and cleaned up to make good power. They're not racing heads by any means, but with the cam and rod angle and pistons you have selected that engine is going to make a lot of mid range power, so you have to select heads to match that. The vortecs would definately be a good choice. The ports aren't huge, so that will keep up air velocity at low speed, which helps with atomization. The carb might be a touch big for what you're doing, but not a bad choice at all. IMO Edelbrock is overpriced for the performance and quality of product you get. Every mag has been able to get 400 + HP out of those heads with minor machining.

allright.... thanks agian.. one more question for you.. how much more power could i expect from the vortec heads than the stock 64 cc gm ones i have now (1.50 exhaust, 1.94 intake) new valves, comp cams vavle springs. Just a rough estimate, ive had someone run me a desktop dyno they say around 350 360 HP with the heads i have.

desk top dyno plain old sux, if 20 guys ran your motor on desktop dyno there would be 20 different answers no matter how the specifics are entered. some will claim to be able to do it well but it is B.S. as a real dyno owner I get guys that try to tell me that they believe the 350 chevy they built makes the 600 hp normally asperated as per the desktop dyno not the 290 my dyno jet sez they do. I call my dyno the "Fiction Modifier" because after they dyno they have to come up with all new lies about thier cars. we commonly have a $1 pool when cars come in and all our guesses seem to be within 40 hp extreme spread from the lowest guess to the highest (like "the prices right" game show) if I had to guess your RW HP I would guess in the 330 range (+/- the 40). I hate guessing, that is why we got a dyno (he-he). that would be with vortecs I would guess the same or lower for the edelbrocks because unless it says jr. victor or victor or the new E-tec I dont get impressed by edelbrocks. the performer or RPMs are great for a stock 350 or pickup though. I would rather have a TFS 23' for the money of those two edelbrock heads. I love thier carb manifolds and TPI (lower only) manifolds though. if you got a set of track ones all bets are off, of the two heads that really stick in my head as consistent powerful performers it is the track one and the sportsman II's, the AFR's get more than honorable mention too.

Yeah, i really dont see how it could be very accurate just a rough estimate. You are guessing 330 rear wheel HP or are you talking at the crank?

DeskTop Dyno

My dad and I built a relativly mild(stock heads) 355 and Desktop dyno said it had 350hp. We brought it to a friend of my dads garage and ran it on the dyno. It made 429hp. Maybe I entered the specs wrong but it still shouldnt be off that far
