New to Nitrous, a little weary

I just bought an 83 T/A about 9 months ago. The guy I bought it from was trying to turn it into a true strip car. Well, he obviously threw a 100 shot in there. Naturally, when I was looking at the car to buy it, the little red button next to the shifter basically sold me but I am a little weary.

I've had the car for a while and I haven't hit it the NOS yet, though I've been tempted. I kept blaming in on the car's condition (had to rebuild the trans, new carb/intake, etc.) Well now I've got all the junk fixed and all my friends are telling me to hit the nitrous cuz they want to experience it. I'm still a little weary because it's my ONLY car. I'm scared that I'll hit the button and send a piston into orbit and that will be it. The only reason is the guy that owned the car before me said he used it all the time and would hold it for like 5-8 seconds on the highway (which I think is completely crazy). And he did all this with NO Air/Fuel to even tell if he was running lean. Well I've since got all the stuff together and I think I'm ready to hit it but I want to be fully prepared so any comments or advice you guys have would be appreciated. Thanks!

Steve

100 shot really couldnt hurt much as long as your enigne is running up to par. Using it for 5-8 seconds is not long at all, considering that most average cars run it for about 12 seconds at the strip.

Why dont you just buy a Chevette and drop in a Caddy 500 like Car Craft did? At least you wont be out alot of money or transportation when it blows up.

Wish it were that easy

Yeah I wish I could just hit it and not care if I blow the thing up. But since it is also my daily driver, the only other option I would have is an 87 Dodge Omni with a blown head gasket. And since I don't have 1 grand to toss at some damn engine, I'll be a little cautious with it. Thanks!
