91 z-28 tpi motor to carb motor swap

Hey i am new here so i just get right to it and maybe someone can help. I bought the car at the junkyard it was a tpi but it is gone along with the ecm and the engine harness so here is my question. The engine i am putting in is a 350 carbed which really requires very little wiring but i have no,, engine harness at all but i don't see any wires going back to the fuse block to power everything else in the car. What do i need to power everything else up?? Please help me.

Unless you are going to rewire everything from scratch you at least need a factory harness of some sort
for the engine bay that goes to the firewall connector so you have power to the coil and starter as well
as the gauges, not to mention minor items like the fuel pump and radiator fan

Re: 91 z-28 tpi motor to carb motor swap

Thanks for the help. I figured that i would need a harness so i went to the junk yard today and got one. No ecm though can't find that out there but i don't think i need one. I am using a 700 r4 out of a 84 ta i don't think it had computer in 84. Does that seem accurate. As far as fuel pump i am using a holly manual and the cooling fan is also out of the ta. Thanks again for the help i am not very familiar with cars with computer controlled stuff. I have always had 60 muscle cars so i can use all the help i can get.

Carb doesn't need the ECM to run the engine but if your car was a TPI the the speedo signal came
from the ECM so you have to do a work around to fix that.
Is well documented on here

The ECM didn't control the shifts on the auto but controlled the lockup convertor.
With no ECM you have to have some way of locking the convertor

for options

You will also need the correct brackets for the carb to connect the TV cable that operates the shifting of the trans.
This controls trans operation, is not just a kick down cable that you may be more used to
Recommendation is to swap the TPI TV cable ( too long ) for one from a carb car ( 1986 Camaro with an LG4 VIN "H" engine. )

Some edumacational reading on correct TV cable operation with a carb swap

Re: 91 z-28 tpi motor to carb motor swap

Thanks for all the help. I have learned more in the last two days from this sight then i have learned in a long time. I am still torn about the 700 r4 verse turbo 350 or 400. I have thee 700 r4 but a stock converter my engine really would be much happier with 2500 to 3000 stall which i have for turbo 350. I can round up a turbo 350 pretty easy but then there is still the issue of speedo and what about the torque arm. And then the fuel advantage of 700 r4 but i not building a commuter more of a friday night strip car and a Saturday morning auto cross. Decisions i guess thats why i love buildig them you get to make it just how you want it.

You buy or make something like this

others on here know the ins and outs of 3rd gen speedos better than me but you use one of these
http://tpiparts.net/inc/sdetail/10956/7587
on the TH350 to generate the required VSS signal then there are ways of using that signal to make the speedo work without the ECM
