Bang For the Buck

Ok, I got rid of the anemic 305 on my third gen, got 600 miles on the 350 and then it got totalled by a b_tch in a minivan on a cell phone. (And it was MY fault!?!) Me and my friend troy street raced it up in renton, we guess it is running around a 15 flat. It kicks *** to 4500 rpms, and then falls flat on its face. I need top end, because VTEC is making me look bad. The 350 is 9:1 comp, the throttle body is stock with an open element, I use an edelbrock TBI performer intake, 882 heads (crap I know) mild cam, stock exhaust manifolds, stock single cat, custom flowmaster 2.5 inch cat back exhaust, stock gears, with a built 700r4. I am thinking SLP 1 3/4" headers, and a good flowing cat. Will this improve my top end? if not, what would be the best way to use my extremely limited budget? Bang For the buck is a big deal, as i'm a college kid with little to spare.

Put in a better cam. Makes a big difference. I have a Comp Cam XE268 pulls hard to 5800 rpms.

If you decide to use headers do NOT get 1-3/4 inch primaries. At best use 1-5/8 inch primaries.

I don't think headers are your problem though. You put on headers when you're restricting output from you engine. Your engine just isn't putting out. Make it put out first. You litteraly need to change engine configuration (heads, cam) to do better. I'm not sure you want to go there.

I think your cam would be a major thing to change, also, Ive heard that TBI guys use the 454 truck Throttle bodies and get pretty good performance out of them.

Of course, if I were you, the TBI would fall off and a Carb would go in its place.

Im sure the stocker is holding you back also. Sounds like you have potential you just gotta get those minor things all ironed out first and then that thing will scream!

Welcome to the board.

Look at your engine as an air pump! Intake, cam, exhaust, it all comes down to heads for chevy's! I have always heard that a sbc cylinder heads is where you can make power. On my corvette, i had trickflow tws heads and they workded awsome, i probaly gained 70hp at the wheels. I now have afr's and the same results and my cam is a little over stock. I know heads are a pain to put on and can be the most expensive excluding a supercharger but noting beats a good set of heads! Or a good set of stock heads ported...especially on the exhaust side.

ok, i don't have enough money for AFR heads, or any heads right now for that matter, and as for the carb, there aren't many fast TBI cars out there. my goal is 14 flat, maybe breaking into the 13's witout a power adder. I plan on squeezing it soon though, and eventually I have talked to people about building me a turbo kit, but until I have 5 g's i am stuck where I am now, naturally aspirated. Is breaking into the 14's a reasonable expectation for what I have? or are 882 heads really that ****ty? really what i am asking is Where do I go from here? Ive done the swap, and I love the torque, but what are little things i can do to shave off one or two tenths? I plan on putting a spacer in the throttle body, moving the injectors out of the bores, which i heard is more of a throttle response thing. What else can i do? Pulleys? Anything?

The quickest way to shave time off your quarter mile is by changing your rear end gears, depending on what they are now....If they are 2.73's you can take almost a second off your quarter mile time if you switch to 3.73's. Be on the lookout for some 186 heads. There are still some in junkyards and at swap meets, and if they are ported right, have some real good potential for hp.

If you still have the stock TBI from a 305 on there, you NEED to do something about that. For a 350 to perform well it needs around a 650cfm potential...Since you already have an aftermarket intake, getting the holley 670 cfm TBI wont help you much, because it uses larger 2" bores, and i think your intake uses the stock size bores. Look into getting a spacer and some bigger injectors. There are a lot of tips about increasing the TBIs flow.

Talk to JPrevost about mods, since he did the 350 TBI thing a while ago. I think he's a mod on the TBI board.
