Re: Track and Street car build

Really like seeing you and your hot rod on track, the photos look great!
Get some of these framed for your shop.

15 years ago the Cal Speedway infield track was where I experienced a big improvement in my left foot brake skills.
Was doing well that day except the one time I came onto the infield back straight and forgot to move my left foot off the brake pedal and back over the clutch for an upshift.
I hit the brake pedal thinking it was the clutch and gave a serious unintended brake check to the poor guy following me.
I really prefer the infield over the Roval, the Roval is a little boring really.
I prefer bumpy Big Willow over the Roval.
Not going to miss the Roval when its gone.

Got some numbers for it. Still need to order some 3.5" or 4" for the rear corner and head light. But little at a time.

They are magnetic so I can pull em off. A little nervous to drive on the street in California with them on. I might once just to drive it over to show my dad. But we'll see.

Now you just need the Mello Yello sponsorship, and you'll have it all, Cole.

Re: Track and Street car build

Any story behind choosing 51?
Did you test them at freeway speeds?
I had magnetic numbers before at speed that required a little painters tape on the leading edge.

5 and 10 were correct for the historic livery on my cars.
I used 59 on my old 911 because it was a Brumos tribute.

Re: Track and Street car build

Main reason, When I was into desert racing the class number I was assigned was 51. But just funny my dad's car is 50. And my street stock when I bought it had number 52 on it. So I thought I'd stick with the theme.

Re: Track and Street car build

you did a great job on that car, looks cool. also cool that you took it to the track. like passmenow said, i would frame some of those. i see late model/nascar chassis and rollers for sale every now and then for shockingly cheap, and i have always wanted to make a "streetable" car out of one using a 3rd gen body or something like that. maybe someday.

Yeah I got a canvas print of one of the photos. As for taking an old race car to make it street able. I would suggest you go for a Street stock rather than a late model. Reason being you can get them even cheaper but also the driver compartment is more stock due to the class. Meaning much easier to add a passenger seat without compromising the strength. Late models are more of an offset chassis and give less room and are built to have the exhaust where the passenger seat is. It takes a lot more work. I got my street stock for $750.

Checked out this race car project last week.
Seller wanted to build it for the 25 hours of Thunderhill race. But he has 20 race cars and ran out of time on this one.
It's at Norris's shop belongs to a friend of mine up in Huntington beach.
Roller around $4k, Jackson chassis, new Norris/All Star 4th gen body, rack and pinion, quick change rear end.
Still available.
If I was in younger and wanted a race car project....

Re: Track and Street car build

Sorry Camaro has been put on hold for a little bit. In the middle of moving and a couple other projects. Did get the Engine for my 55 Chevy running today though. That felt good! Sounds even better.

It's a 454 stroked and bored to 502, Howards aluminum rods, Arias pistons Custom roller Howards cam made by Don Johansson before he passed. Dart heads, vertex mag, old school weiand tunnel ram with two 650 HP Holley carbs. 14.2:1 compression. It could get more power with a bigger cam and better intake. But Donnie said he didn't want me to kill myself haha. But damn this thing is an animal!

How about a photo of your 55?
Looks like a beast, guess on HP?
You have your hands full, off road, road race and drag racing projects too?

Re: Track and Street car build

My buddy Don who helped me a lot with getting this together. He's a big drag racer has a vintage top fuel funny car. He said the engine as it sits should be around 950 HP. He said with a bigger cam it would be closer to 1100.. but I'm good with the 950 hp.

The car is pretty far from being done right now. I've got everything to do it. Just need time. I've got different wheels for it, a Pontiac rear end, fuel cell in the trunk, I have a clutch turbo 400 for it. The doors and front clip are fiberglass. It was a race car in its early life. No history but it was a metallic purple, then later black lacquer over the top of that. I haven't fully decided on colors. Primer for now to have fun.

Been working on the firewall on my oval car. Once I'm done with that I'll stick the engine and trans in. Then see how I want to mount the radiator then make new front down bars.

Wicked altered! Dad took me to Lions back in the late 60s and from then till my late 30s drag racing was my primary hobby.
Had a bunch of fun at OCIR, Carlsbad, Pomona, Terminal Island Long Beach, LA County Strip, Sacramento, The Strip in Vegas, Firebird in AZ and the 1/8 mile in the SD stadium parking lot.

You have any photos? I'm sure you were out there when my dad was. Or my grandpa and plenty of other friends doing the same thing.

This is my grandpa with his partner. They owned Astro wheels and had a top fuel dragster driven by Jeep Hampshire.

This was my dad's late 60's race car. Before it he had several 55 Chevys.

Early 70's my dad and one of his friends went partners on an Anglia. They raced it until they both had kids.

But my dad traded the white 67 super sport, the tow car from the photo above for his half of the Anglia. And he still has it. He added a radiator, side pipe mufflers and treaded mickey Thompson tires to make it a "street car".

So awesome, you certainly take after your father and grandfather.
Big fan of the Anglia.

I got the car "bug" from friends growing up in Anaheim in the early 70s.
So my first car was a VW bug, went and raced at OCIR Bug Ins and other VW events.
Built Tickled Pink in 87' and it still raced in Italy today.
That's a long life for VW frag bug.
Won $400 for a Bracket 1 win at Famosa, only time I won money racing.
Built 3 Cal Look VW ran 11.70s to low 12s featured in various mags.
Then in 2000 went 911 racing and now happy with old Camaros.
Bust today instead of racing at the BBB I'm hosting a slot car race. oh well.

Oh sweet! Soo you're one of the guys my dad taught me at a young age. If a guy trys you in a VW and it doesn't sound absolutely stock. Tell him no because he's about to kick your butt! Hahaha

hey slot car racing is still racing. And your Camaros aren't just run if the mill Camaro.
Yeah I didn't make the BBB either. I bought a bunch of parts for my Camaro but just haven't had the time.

Altereds, Anglias, front engine dragsters are my favorites.
Yeah Gene Berg was VW racer and back in the day when a V8 beat his VW he would tell the V8 racer, "go tell your friends you beat a Volkswagen".

Haha Musgrave. Yeah someone from there at least used to live in my neighborhood just a couple blocks down. I would see them coming home almost every day towing the enclosed trailer with Musgrave racing on the side.

I remember there used to be a racer Ted Musgrave.... I wonder if any relation?

***** Musgrave is the business owner.
He raced off road MX in the stadium MX events, and now sells/service modern shifter karts, driver coaching and slot car businesses.
If you have time Saturday visit Musgrave's shop and check out the neo magnet slot car races.
Good news ***** is an expert at slot car track trimming.
I'm dropping off my track there soon for him to re-rail and this time glue the rails down.
So they don't lift from heavy magnet cars.

Finally had some time to work on the Camaro. Need to change the speedometer drive gear off the output shaft. Got the tail housing off and cleaned, installed new bushing and seal. It's ready to go back on.

However, the gear proved to be quite the knuckle buster to get off. It fought me the entire way off the journal. And also broke the tang off the retaining clip. So had to order a new clip. Once that gets in I can put it all back together again.

New speedometer gears installed

New pan with a drain plug.

All back together again. Drive shaft is nice and tight now. Didn't realize how bad the old bushing was. Didn't have time to put fluid in and test yet. I'll do that tomorrow.

Re: Track and Street car build

Got my new Speedway Motors sway bar installed. Got a lot more tire clearance now.

Very quick and easy install

Center link clears arms by about 1/8". Perfect!

Oh also got time to fit the strut tower brace from UMI performance Suspension. Now it's designed for a tune port injection for fitment. It's supposed to go up and over. Well with my set up and having the air pan it surprisingly fit down and under. It clears by 1/8". So I guess I could have ordered it done and welded from UMI. But I thought I was going to need to make my own bar. Oh well just need to weld the bungs in and touch up the paint.

The high desert challenge with VARA is next month has a run group for street cars. Any chance you'll make it? Our 4th gen is finally ready after a major service.

Sweet you're getting the car together Mike. I'm not sure I'll be able to make Willow, but I'd sure like too. I'm definitely going to try.. I love that track, and the great people.

Re: Track and Street car build

Finally got around to making up my fuel lines and PCV line

FluidFlow gauge clamps and tools. But on this project for the vintage look I had to run the old school red and blue fittings with steel line. that's all Russell. I've got all FluidFlow products on my Jeep and it's high quality at a good price.

Using all the right tools makes the job easy and no leaks on the first try.

Re: Track and Street car build

Just to geek out on vintage stuff I put an old GM ignition module housing on the tunnel. Not using it just wanted the look. Was trying to figure out how to make it a small compartment to keep my registration and insurance card in. But gave up on that for now.
