Re: 91 tube chassis project
awesome looking car. I'm working on a similar build with an 83 body. I'm wondering what wheelbase are you using? Stock is 101 inches, it's common to use a 103 inch wheelbase with a 2 inch extended clip, but i have talked too a local racer at the track who replied " 104 passenger side, 105 drivers side" and another guy who said " 102 inches". Just curious what wheelbase you built into your car. I'm 6'5" and every inch counts. Really like the stance of your build.

Re: 91 tube chassis project
^ hes correct on the stagger. mine is 102.5 exact on wheel base. not super short but has a long nose over hang past front tires which i like for optical illusion when bracket racing.

I had the trailer jacked up so high the door was almost flat and still had to use boards right here the front end was on the ramp.

Well the car is blown almost completely apart got some minor fab work to do for bottom of windshield over holiday weekend and working on capping off the body where we cut all the old uni frame out. after that body off floor in and move on to blaster and paint chassis then we start the carbon interior!

Re: 91 tube chassis project
Well the car has a window cowl again just to finish up some minor welding and sheet metal work. then cap the body off and install drivers floor. Hopefully weekends start to be more productive now that I'm getting extra financial flow back into the race car fund.

Re: 91 tube chassis project
Are you taking about caping of the rocker panels? If so , I used cold rolled 12 or 14 gauge I have to check it to verify. The rockers are galvanized so you have to sand off the zinc before you weld them

Re: 91 tube chassis project
I was careful when I cut the body apart on my car so I could save the vin plate , window frame and door mounts. The window framework was boxed underneath so that it can support the pillars.

Re: 91 tube chassis project
I used 18 gauge steel to box the window frame. At this point I’m almost done with the funny car cage and just received my fiberglass from Harwood. It’s hard to imagine how much work I have left to get the point your HotRod is

Re: 91 tube chassis project
well i'm working on capping the uni body of course using 20 gauge steel. just trying to look as clean as possible. i actually cut my factory window cowl out and built my own becaue it was all hacked up from people who started cutting the car up.

Re: 91 tube chassis project
I look at pictures of cars for sale on racingjunk.com for ideas. I have seen a few cars with the lower sheet metal on the bottom side of the main cage, which I think looks real good. For my car it would be way easier to mount the sheet metal that way and make a cleaner aero dynamic surface underneath. Having a good bead roller is a plus. My plans are for the firewall and underside to be smooth with some bead rolls. The sheet metal in the rear will be on the top side of the tubing from the 4-link back to the taillight panel.

Re: 91 tube chassis project
Yeah my plans are carbon sheets in passenger floor and trunk with carbon tubs and tunnel for trans. just want to get my sheet metal on body looking good first. got a little work to do on firewall other than that its done. just wanting to get my plan of attack in place before i start wasting metal.

i'll also be putting some panels underneath to cu air out from under the car. plus an engine pan whihc serves both purpose of that and safety

Re: 91 tube chassis project
I hope your making progress on the car. I noticed in earlier pictures you had an aluminum seat in the car, but now it looks like a fiberglass seat with steel framework... Did this help you with headroom and or comfort? I’m a big and tall guy so I’m checking my options before i start mounting the Kirkey seat I have. Thanks

Re: 91 tube chassis project
yes the fiberglass seat was for head room and comfort it rocked me back in the seat which lowered my head and gave me that natural sitting position. Here's some new pics from recent work finally getting around to spending some time on it.
passenger tub in carbon.
carbon tunnel with the glass dash back in it from passenger side.
driver side business side for me!
