15 x10's, talk to me about back spacing

Tried posting this in the wheel and tire section and didn't get much help, figure I'll try it here. I currently have a set of 15x8 drag lites with 4.5" BS and they look good on the car with 275/50/15 (26") Hoosier Dr's. I will be buying a set of RT-S' and I want to go with a 15x10 in the rear. I want to fit a 275/60/15 (28") tall Hoosier Dr or MT radial pro. I am torn between a 5.5" and 6.5" BS. I like the look of the 6.5 but it seems like a lot of work. Also seems like you have to change the suspension up a little bit. On the flip side I have seen pics of the 5.5" BS that look good and flush with the wheel wells and other pics where it looks like Joe Dirt's car. Pics and advice welcome. I know the 275 radials aren't all that wide. Just want the car too look good, retain all stock style suspension and not rub with a slightly lower stance.

Here's the car with the 15x8's. I like the placement of the tire in the wheel well. I'm going for this look with a wider rim and taller tire.

6.5" backspacing. cut the bump stops out and do a little hammering/trimming at the front lca mount area. that's all i did basically. its an afternoon's worth of work dude.

Thanks guys. 15x9 with a 5.5 was my original plan but I would like to have the extra inch if it's that easy. mw66nove, I love you car. The rear wheels look right.

Re: 15 x10's, talk to me about back spacing

The 28" Hoosiers should fit with no problems on a 10" rim with 5.5" of backspace. You could go with a 6.5" backspace to tuck them under the fenders a little more but also may need to do some inner clearance work with the bump stops and maybe the front radius of the inner fender. Tucking the tires under the fender more really depends on the tire height. It's not the inner frame rails or bump stop that causes the most problems. It's that the taller tire needs more room at the front and rear of the wheel opening on the inside because the inner fender wraps around.

Either rim will work just fine however the 5.5" choice is more common and easier to use.

Re: 15 x10's, talk to me about back spacing

I only run radials so my tire choice is either a 275/60/15 DOT Hoosier radial or new MT ET street radial pros. I might run the stand ET street radial on the street from time to time. No bias ply's, no 295's, no "W" tires. I would like to see some more pics of 5.5" BS because some look good and other stick out too much for my liking. Also I'm not sure how and fender well cutting will work with my GFX.

it won't effect your GFX at all. all the cutting happens on the inner fender, nothing outside.
bump stop area cut out.

you can either box it when you're done or not. this was a little extreme, i could have done it differently probably, so i boxed mine back in. here it is boxed back in:

Re: 15 x10's, talk to me about back spacing

i did the mods like the pictures above, and 28x10.5 hoosier slicks were still a tight fit with a 15x10 5.5 bs. no way in the world could i have used a 6.5 bs on my car, but what i am thinking is the rearend that was in the car before i got it was a little bit narrower than stock. 275 60 15's fit pretty easily, though.

Ah, I see now. That doesn't look too bad at all. Just cut the bump stop, box in that area and use a BFH on anything else? Is it easier on certain years?

Yeah, mini-tub is the last thing I want to do. It seems like a lot of guys have gotten 6.5" BS wheels to fit with minimal work and they run bigger tires.

i've had 28x10.5S M/T, 29x9 Hoosier, multiple brands 275/60/15's, and currently on a 26x10.0S M/T. with the mods i've done, all have fit without issue, and without any additional spacers.

If you do the 15x10 route, do the extra work to get the 6.5bs to work. The 5.5bs looks like ***.

Re: 15 x10's, talk to me about back spacing

When it comes down to it a 15x10 with 6" BS is really what you need, but there's very few of them out there. I'm another one that just went with a 15x9 with 5.5" BS (275/60-15), which is the same offset as the 6" bs, since 10" is on the wide side for most of the tires people try to run on these cars (and actually above spec for a few 275 and 10" DOT tires).

If you insist on a 10 and don't want to find a 6" BS, then you have to make a choice, 5.5 and have most sidewalls stick out a little (but the tread is in the fenders), or 6.5 and have to do some cutting/hammer work to the insides (honestly, with a 28" tall tire, even the 6" BS requires some hammer work in the front of the wheel well to clear >27" tall tire)

Any down sides to running a 9" wheels? I think the RT-S is actually 9.33" width.

Thanks. I like the look of the 15x9's. I just hope the narrower rim won't beat up the sidewall if you run the radials with low pressure.

Re: 15 x10's, talk to me about back spacing

but you're not supposed to really run low pressure with a radial. most of the fast guys i know on a radial use 17-22psi. i went 10.8x's at 20psi...

Re: 15 x10's, talk to me about back spacing

I know you're not supposed to. I have raced in unrepped events and I used to run on the street with my last car. I ran a 275/40/17 Hoosier Dr all the way down to 11-13 psi on occasion and got it to hook on ice. An 8" rim also may cause the car to sway a bit because you lose some side wall integrity but putting a wide tire on a narrow rim. I'm just wondering how much that is present on a 275/60/15 on a 8,9 and 10" rim. I have never ran a 15" rim or 28" drag radial and my car will be grudge raced quite a bit, probably won't be on the street though.

I run a 4th gen width 9", 2" wider then a thirdgen. I run 15 x10's with 7.5" backspace and 1/2" spacers, effectively making it a 7" BS. I had to do about 15 seconds worth of hammering at the front of the drivers side wheel well and cut out the bump stops. They fit like a glove.

I run a 4th gen rear with 15x9 wheels with a 6.5 bs. That's with a 275 radial, and minimal removal around bumpstop

15x10 with 5.5" backspacing:

these were some of my favorite wheels on the car, but i HATED how the rear tires looked in the wells. Weld doesn't make a 15x10 Rodlite with 6.5" backspacing though

I completely agree with you. That is the look I want to stay very far away from. Looks like 6.5 is the only option for a 15x10 for me. Otherwise it's a 15x9 with a 5.5 BS.

If you want any pictures of the car with the 275 Pro Radials I can post them also. But I figured that the slick is slightly bigger .

Re: 15 x10's, talk to me about back spacing

or you can stuff 29/13/15 on a Weld RTS 10x15 6.5 Back space. (9"ford)
looks like this

could only go this tall of tire (29" tall) GFX stops me from going 30" tall... but the 4.11 gears and 29" tall tires are fantastic

Re: 15 x10's, talk to me about back spacing

note all the above shots of rims are of the RTS wheels all the wheels in the rts line run .275 over what ever width you order in anything over 8"
expl a 10" wide wheel will be 10.257 wide same for the 9"wide =9.275 wide

as with the 9" wide wheel with the 6.5 back space runs close to the out side
= spokes looking flush with rim face. with stock rear disck brakes you can run a low pad wheel with a 5.5 back space and fit the smaller 275 tire tucked under.

I my self like the look of the off set=more dish looking
this below shot shows 15x8 welds 4.5 back space 28/12.5 et streets
cars on stands but wheels & tires fit. with out any mods for years ran fine.

it was time for updating the car.
so now the 29/13/15 sportsmen look like this on the 10.275/6.5 BS/15Weld RTS wheels

Re: 15 x10's, talk to me about back spacing

the sportsmen tires have a overly large balloon side wall. a set of 325/50/15 drag radials are 1" shorter at 28" tall and are 1/2" wider. but are less bulbous on the side wall. and would fit even better. still tucking under even better

cuzz that was the 10 sec ticket back in the 90's.when weld drag lites sold like hot cakes
and you have to keep the LCA 's on the car with SSM bars/ladderbars. to run just the bars is wrong/Dangerous. even SSM stated in the install info to Keep them.
Contrary to what a few Folks THINK...there is No Binding. or what ever they seem to think..the guys who did not run the LCA broke parts and gave up.. this set up has over 500 track hits on it..
most of them in the 10.50's a few in the 11.70's.. but that's back in the 90's when it was 50 state smog ligt.

it's getting backhalf soon. this is also the last small block (427) im doing,,ever!
it's 572's as a base.. for now on...
