Best autocross tire with 140+ tread wear

Alright, let me hear some feedback on what tires people run for autocross. I run in STU so I have a 140 minimum tread wear limit. I also can run a maximum width of 285mm. I just picked up some 18x10.5 wheels so I need some tires soon. I've been considering the Dunlop Direzza Z2's or the BFG rivals mostly

Re: Best autocross tire with 140+ tread wear

I have the same question for when I have the money but from what I've heard and read it's like asking what the best religion is! I've got a pair of used Proxes R1R that a fellow racer gave me so I may match those. Doing a quick bit of searching I found Hoossier A6, Dunlop ZII, the Rivals, B'stone RE-II and Kumho ecsta 720 and I keep hearing about the start specs by Dunlop. All with assorted pros and cons. I'm sure there are many more. What are the winners running? And how much money do you have?

A lot of those tires you mentioned are pretty different from each other. The Hoosier A6 is a full race slick. Illegal in my class. I'm looking for direct feedback though. See, what works well on a miata or FRS may not work on a Camaro. I've heard reports that the ZII's may overheat too easily on a heavier car unless sprayed down after every run

My vote goes to Toyo Proxes R1R. They grip for days, but they are light on communicating when they are about to lose it.

Direzza and Rivals are also good, but from what I understand Direzzas/Star Specs benefit a lighter car.

Re: Best autocross tire with 140+ tread wear

Well if you want to get crazy, go with the brigestone RE-11's there rating is a little higher than the others, but they put more tire down on the surface. If you know of someone that can still shave the tires, I believe Tire Rack can do that still. Have the tread cut down to about 6/32 tread height. That will help stabilize the tread blocks and give you more bite in the corners because the tires will not want to chunk the rubber off when cornering.

Problem is that these tires do not come in many sizes. You can't get them in the super popular 275-40-17 size at this point, otherwise I would have a set of each on our wheels.

Re: Best autocross tire with 140+ tread wear

I run Kumho XS ....specifically designed auto cross tire. Works amazing, dropped a lot of time running those vs goodyear f1s and I believe the treadwear is 140 exactly (ill go look), also they make it in a 265/45/16 which is little hard to find, but fits stock 8 inch wheels

Re: Best autocross tire with 140+ tread wear

I would go with either one you mentioned, OP. Many tire competitions had the new BFG Rivals as the best but Tire Rack had the Drezza ZII better than the rivals on their test 3-series cars which are definitely not lightweights.

My favorite autocross tire are Michelin Pilot Sport PS2's but those are much more expensive than the others so I will get something else before I get the Pilot Sports.
